Oh wow Fern! You make me blush real heard. When I started making my first videos on CZcams, I would never imagine that my most favorite CZcamsr would mention me in one of her videos and say such nice words! 🙏 Thank you so so much! I see that a lot of people are reacting to you owning an orchid. 😊 I am so curious as well. I think you will do great with them! The Odorion can be sold as a scented mini Phalaenopsis and a lot of companies change the names. I see a lot of suggestions for the Schilleriana, which is my top wishlist orchid, and I would also suggest it to you because it is stunning. But I have heard it can be a little finicky so just a heads up. Also the variegated Phalaenopsis are very beautiful and have a similar vibe to the variegated Christmas cactus! 💗

Go to the grocery store for phalenopsis orchids lol. I found mini ones at Giant Tiger. The one I bought has quickly grown. They're not variegated, but they're cheap so if it dies you're not losing a lot of money. I have all my orchids growing in vases with sphagnum moss around the roots and rocks in the water reservoir under it. It's a set it and forget it way, because I was always forgetting to water them

My husband brought home a plant that a bank or something had thrown out. It was huge! It ended up being an agleonema silver bay. It was quite leggy so I decided to chop it to just a couple of inches above the soil and then propagated the parts I had cut off. I didn't lose a single cutting and the momma shot out great new growth and I ended up with four smaller pots of the propagations (with 4-5 stems in each). The care has been super easy while the plant is also satisfying! You should absolutely get one! They're a "common plant" but very beautiful.
As for wishlist plants...my top is a strappy anthurium like a pallidiflorum or vittarifolium...and then...
    begonia amphioxus
    hoya callistophylia
    hoya mathilde
    black pagoda lipstick plant.
Good luck getting your wishlist plants!

If you're not worried about it, chop off that wacky leaf on the obovata! It will encourage new growth.
That said I'm really surprised it rotted in Leca! I've only had the best of luck with Hoya in Leca they seem to absolutely thrive in it. Have had a couple rot in pon though but only because I let them dry out.

The phal odorion is pretty common in grocery stores in Canada. I’m in Ontario and I see them all the time at Loblaws/Zehrs in the florist section, will cost about $15 with a small ceramic pot which is way less than an orchid speciality shop. Bonus, the odorian is scented (kinda soapy and rosy) which is unusual for a mini phal!

I’m so happy you got to acquire so many of your wishlist plants! Your gratitude and appreciation are really inspiring. You put so much good out into the workd. ❤️
You’re the reason the begonia thurstonii is on the top of my list. I acquired a lot of my wishlist plants this year and more. I am trying to resist buying more plants for a while now. B thurstonii, alocasia maharani, and maybe philodendron sharonii. The begonia and the philo are really tough to get in Europe. Someday :) I really like taking time to not buy and to simply appreciate.
Orchids aren’t as tough as they seem, you just need to know what they like. Miss Orchid Girl on CZcams will teach you everything you need to know. My orchids feel almost like pets instead of plants lol. Phals are easy, and jewel orchids are super accessible right now.

I got a phalaenopsis orchid for myself as a birthday gift this year and really struggled with it in orchid mixes. However, once i switched it to LECA in a self watering pot and started using the General Hydroponics nutrient solution it TOOK OFF. I mean like it was putting out leaves at the same time has blooms. It had 15 blooms on one spike and once that spike started to drop leaves it put out another spike immediately! I highly recomend leca if you get an orchid as well as the GE Blooming Specturm grow light! all i have to think about with it now is misting it with orchid spray and refilling its cachepot!

ok there are too many comments to sort through to see if someone has already recommended these, but check out roehampton orchids! I ordered a couple of tiny (like, loonie-sized!!) orchids from them a few years ago and they have a huge selection. I believe Crystal Star Nursery also usually stocks a pretty good selection of orchids once they start shipping again in the spring! Good luck on your orchid hunt, and wishing you and your plants a happy and healthy 2023! :)

  • @planty_life_of_kris
    @planty_life_of_kris Před rokem

Roehampton Orchids is amazing. Fantastic service and in Canada. Grocery store is good as phals and mini phals are so common, but you may not find the specific one you are looking for. Ecuagenera is an amazing source with a huge selection and will let you pick up at a show they are at to avoid the perils of shipping and getting through customs. You can also look for an orchid show/society in your province for contacts, sometimes they do group orders. Phals are super easy, soak once a week or so for half hour with orchid fertilizer and they will faithfully bloom every year in the cooler months. An east, north or west windowsill is perfect as they require the cooler temperatures to induce blooming. If using bark, replace every 2 years, otherwise leca works great. Check out miss orchid girl on CZcams for more orchid care. Best of luck on your orchid journey!

Enjoyed your wishlist video and update from 2022. Funny about your variegated obovata rotting in leca, I’m currently moving my hoyas to PON and the only Hoya to rot in PON was an obovata! Rerooted and put back in soil. Go figure. 😮 Glad you were able to save yours!

Hi Fern. I do have two Aglaonemas. I have the Maria and the Silver Bay. They are some of the easiest care plants I have. They’ve always been in regular room humidity. They do seem to like a little bit lower light. I’m in Florida and tried them in a southwest window and they were not so happy. They perked up when I put them back from the direct sunlight. I’m also on my second String of Pearls. I killed the first one when I put it outside. I also got a variegated one but the variegation disappeared fast. They turned all green so I put them in the pot with the other one. My wishlist plant now is the variegated Obovata. I have an Obovata splash that I love so much. Merry Christmas and thanks for the video. 🎄💚🌱💚

I’m waiting until spring to buy a Dioon Edule in the mail, apparently they are really old, like before dinosaur old. I’m really excited to get one, it’s like a mini palm tree. The other dream plants on my list are a variety of begonias and alocasia but I live in a super dry environment so I might hold back on those until I have the right enclosure for them, and then finally I really want a stag-horn fern!

I have a ferox, the youngest leaves are flat but within 3 months I had new leaves with spikes from a 1 leaf cutting. It is pretty easy in normal room conditions. The mellanobulato has spikes on young leaves, haven't got it yet

Omg I didn’t know that most of these plants were not as obtainable in Canada, because in Washington has most of those plants in Nursery’s! Btw for the decision between the joepii and the 69686 I prefer the 69686 because it’s more elongated and little more affordable!

I have about 8 orchids! They’re very easy lol I leave them on my windowsill and they bloom twice a year. Around Christmas and around early to mid summer.
There’s some nice orchids on Crystal Star but I don’t think they’re shipping plants for the season! Your local grocery stores and even Walmart sells orchids! Also Roehampton Orchids! I got a couple from there in 2020!

wow that aglaonema manila's pride is stunning! everyone goes so wild for the pictum tricolor but it seems like the manila's pride would be easier to care for, based off the pics i've seen of people growing them in normal home conditions.
I have two aglaonemas rn that I adore: the aglaonema chocolate and a aglaonema commutatum picturatum alumina. They're both kind of "dupes" for plants that I have a difficult time growing. The chocolate looks like a calathea ornata and the alumina is light/slivery blue like the philodendron silver sword

I’ve been using the same casetify case since I bought my phone like 3+ years ago. The back is clear but the sides are pink and the sides are coming apart from the clear part and the design on the back got all scratched off about a year ago but she’s still holding on. I think this video is a sign to finally get a new one 😂
