It's the same as being in the trees on skis or snowboard. See the spaces, not the trees. On a MTB, see the line & not what you're avoiding. Take in what you want to avoid well before you're there -- that's why you look up! -- and trust your mind's retention of that thing you'll be avoiding. Focus now on your line and trust your memory of the thing you'll avoid.
Steve Jones did a great MTB instructional video for Dirt Magazine in the 00s, and one of the sections has Steve Peat (if I remember right) talking about this very idea.

Thank you Christina - your tutorials are the best!!! You know who your audience is, and you direct your lessons to us.
You would not believe how many time your teaching came out during our 2 1/2 hour ride.
On the way up a gnarly muddy trail full of roots, my buddy in front of me fell - and I followed his example. I thought about that root during the whole trip and looked forward to trying it again, someday. Well, we decided to take the same trail down and flying over that big root was not such a big deal. I told my buddy that I was going to turn around and try it again. "NO WAY!", he yelled at me as I was leaving the parking lot to go back up the trail. OHHHH - I DID IT!!! With your, Christina, instructions and encouragement, I just got up the speed and confidence, picked my line, and somehow flew up that steep muddy hill and (only losing a little muddy traction) did it!!! My buddy (a better biker than me) was right behind me and he slipped and fell again!!! Yahooooo!!!
Anyway, Christina, this did make up for my earlier humiliating slow motion rolling fall down the steep brush/stick covered side when I went too wide on the icy trail and sank into a molehill, on the now named "Holey-Moley-Rolley" Trail.
Thank you again Christina - NOW, I am going to watch this video again!

Really great video, you are good at this. Number one, you communicate clearly as to the technique. Number two, the slow motion action allows for a clear visual reference back to the verbal instruction. Being a beginner mountain biker in my early 60's, I can (and do) use these videos to improve, and I am improving quickly, which is exciting. I'll be watching for any video on any topic you put out. Thank you so much, this video finally made me hit a bunch of corners flat-out without touching the brakes. All the videos tell you to put your weight over your front wheel and I thought I did that enough. Your remark: "Chin over stem" was finally quantifying it and it made a huge difference.
