Dear friends, I decided to have a try to cover one of the most incredible songs by Yes, and also one of the most beautiful basslines created by Chris Squire. I must say that this sole bassline can be a matter of lengthy study. From the chaotic intro to the most subtle note choices and rhythmic interplaying, there is a lot to contemplate. The most important, I feel, is to just listen to the music. Besides the technical difficulties of the bass playing, there is also the sound. It's really hard to recreate a similar tone as in the recording. Even more difficult cause the original tone changes a lot in different sections of the song, either by effects added or simply because all settings (accidentally or not) were changed. Some of you may know already how Yes would leave a song unfinished in the studio and take all their gear to do a gig, coming back later to finish the track, so that all settings were never quite the same. Nevertheless I tried to stay as close as possible (and reasonable), namely using my Malekko b:assmaster to play the "fuzzy" middle section. I did have an old plugin (used on the Siberian Khatru audio transcription) which was pleasantly close to the kind of tone present on the Close to the Edge album, but I really have lost it and I don't remember its name :) I hope you will enjoy this video, and for those who are still not familiar to Yes, I suggest to take the chance to listen to the original recording - the magnificent "Close to the Edge". This title track, especially, will be a whole musical experience for you! Thank you for reading and watching!

you sir have earned your satin cape.
Thank you!
Yea this guy is the closest I have heard to Chris Squire sound, he has nailed it I agree, the rattle you get on Close to the Edge and the America stomp is just about there. I have the sound on all my Rickenbacker basses, it's all about first using 4 X 10 speakers, 1 or 2 amps preferably the old 70's valve amps, then use the stereo output on the Rickenbacker, the bridge pick-up goes through a fuzz box preferably vintage type like Marshall fuzz box or Maistro Brassmaster fuzz box (if you can find one these days), just a minimum of fuzz and the fuzz treble switch full on, hisses a bit but use a noise gate. The output of the fuzz then loops it into an original Cry Baby Wha WHa set at it's treble, then loop Cry baby through a flange filter, I use an Electro Harmonics Electric Mistress, set on the fixed filter not the sweeping phase, then straight into the amp. The Electric Mistress Flanger fixed filter accentuates the metallic rattle on Chris Squires sound on the later tracks like America, Close to the Edge and Topographic Oceans opening track. Then the neck stereo pickup goes directly into the other amp socket of the same amp or secondary stereo amp, the pick tone needs to be set to treble but will have a lot more bass than the other channel with all the effects, but mix them together using a new set of Roundwound heavy gauge strings and you have a clonky grinding gutsy Rickenbacker sound like C Squire much more powerful than the standard Rickenbacker sound. If it's the first two albums of Yes I've Harold Land track or Sweet Dreams switch off the Electric Mistress metallic sounding flanger. As I said previously, the Electric Mistress flanger is more for the slightly later Yes tracks like America Close to the Edge and Topographic opening track.
In summary, you might well disagree with this and find your own mix but I have spent 50 years trying to perfect these two sounds and the vintage fuzz boxes and Cry Baby are the main trick. 10" and 12" speakers perform better than 15" and 18" speakers when creating this sound. There are some re makes of the Brassmaster fuzz box for sale now that do as good as the original cos an original will set you back £1000 plus now. As for the Ricks, they need to be stereo, 4001 and 4003 are both fine fore this, the 4003 has the old sound toggle switch as you will already know, hope that helps someone?
Great info Paul. My version of the Maestro is the Malekko B:assmaster. The original Gibson model is indeed a rarity nowadays. All the best!
It's worth to mention as well that on Time And A Word the main bass used was the white fender telecaster.
I have found out that, as far as the maestro fuzz goes, it is routed to the neck pickup, I must have read it somewhere but I can't recall where.
:( Chris Squire Forever
Helugo Conache and Ever!
Chris also sang while playing.
Im a millennial sadly and it was only shortly before passing that I saw him play live. He is one of my biggest influences. This was a phenomenal cover
MadKazZzZzZ Same I saw him in 2014
Me too, I’m so fortunate to have seen him
Chris did something that only a few bassists ever really did (ths only other I can name is Geddy Lee) by taking the bass and using it as a lead instrument. Some bassists have done this is select songs, but there's not one yes song where I can say that Chris's bass isn't right out front. Even the stuff off of 90125 and big generator really is centered around Chris's bass. Wonderful cover btw. :) this songs not easily done
+Chase Pendleton Thank you very much, Chase!
Yeah I agree with you on that!!
+Chase Pendleton Scott Thunes of Frank Zappa did likewise..i think he was very much influenced by C.S.
Chase Pendleton Huge fan of Lee and Squire but define lead?
John entwistle
i usually avoid super long songs, but with squire's sound i listen to every second
its like magic
I'm so impressed with your playing. I've been listening to the originals again with new ears on!!
Thank you so much. Cheers
This page is a spectacular tribute to Mr. Squire's legacy. May he rest in peace.
Fun and challenging stuff. Thanks again, #ChrisSquire
D Harmonic Minor ascension first straight, then in thirds. But starting from E....so is that Locrian?
Eric Phillips I would think of it as D harmonic minor in terms of the bassline. It does start on E (2nd degree) but it later resolves in D.
Eric Phillips Thank you very much Eric.
Yes will be always Chris Squire, John Anderson, Bill Brufford, Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman ...
Sugar Free - couldn’t agree more; by far Yes’ greatest line up. The CTTE LP still brings tears to my ears.
Yes
…being a yes fan for over 30 years and then seeing you up close makes me realize how difficult this stuff actually is to play. Extremely well done, thank you!!!
Just started watching your vids, I have seen Yes over 75 times since my first show which was Tales at MSG in 1974. Just awesome what you are doing in these vids.
I play the bass and my hat is off to you. Have you ever done any Dream Theatre covers? Would love to see you cover John Myung. Keep them coming, reall enjoy them.
History is proving your last paragraph, IMO. As for the bass role of Chris in Yes, I also agree. Although I support that each member has an equal share of credit to the music composed. However listening to other bands compositions of the same era, with equally great instrumentalists, it was Chris who provided a new and interesting role of the bass both in composition and tone rather than just fulfilling the usual "necessary" bass.
FANTASTIC!

Outstanding playing of a classic.
Thank you very much, Wildon.
The one person who disliked this video is clearly deaf. Miguel, I first saw you play on your cover of Roundabout, and I was blown away. You are an inspiration to a beginner bassist like myself. 10/10!
