    copper is one of the metals used to create karat gold since pure gold is too soft. nickle and silver are also used. My volume is not large enough, I only get paid for the gold and some of the silver. If my volume is 20 times what I buy a week, I can get paid for all other metals in the bar that I melted.

    How do you separate out the copper and or silver in the gold to get pure gold?

  • @jackfoo2
    @jackfoo2 Před 10 lety +1

    if you want to get pure gold you need to refine it it is a complex proses and is rather dangrus using acids to disolve the metales then outher cemacales to seprate it

    Very interesting. What was the piece you set aside when you loaded the crucible? Something worth more than it's melt?

  • @xyzpeter
    @xyzpeter  Před 12 lety

    @FreedomForYouAndMe The pour borax in the crucible and all the impurities stick to it. Since gold is heavy and all the non metals, stones or diamonds stick to borax and floats to the top. During the final 2 minutes of the melt a glass tube is inserted into the crucible to get a sample to test the purity or percentage of gold by a x-ray spectrometer. Then the molten gold is poured into a mold to let it cool and then dumped in the sink to separate the borax which black now and hard as a rock.

Is that a trade secret by Mid western and other refineries? My buddy used to send to Eastern Smelting Lynwood, Ma.

  • @xyzpeter
    @xyzpeter  Před 11 lety +1

    The margin is high if you buy from the public. I buy only from dealers who buy from the public and make a a good percentage. I deal directly with the refiners who take a few tenth of a percent off the spot gold price. I then take a few tenth off from the dealers I buy from. I can't take more because the competition is very cutthroat.

  • @Robbob9933
    @Robbob9933 Před 10 lety +1

    have you ever tried fractional smelting? This is where you have alloy or mixed metals and start with the lowest melting point of the metals once the melt out you pour the raise the temp to the next lowest and keep repeating. Or does your style of inductive furnace not allow?

    • @xyzpeter
      @xyzpeter  Před 10 lety +1

      It doesn't really matter since I only get paid for gold and silver. Once the batch is melted in the crucible, a glass in dipped into the crucible to get a sample. Then the sample is first analyzed by computer and I get paid 90%. Then a piece of the sample is sent to fire assay which is more accurate determination of percentage of gold and silver. I then get paid the rest. As for other metals, I don't bring enough scrap gold. When business was good last year, I used to melt at least 10 to 15 kilos of scrap gold a week. I need at least 5 times more in order to deal with the big refinery in Chicago. They would pay more on the gold and also pay me for every metal.
      I also use another method. It's called Aqua Regia. I only use this method when I get jewelry pieces with diamonds still on them. Some diamonds may crack when the furnace is used. Removing small 1 point diamonds by hand from jewelry pieces is a pain in the neck and can take very long time. So I save the pieces with diamond until I have a lot and use aqua regia. It uses acid and removes gold only. It takes a few hours and when the process is finished I get diamonds, stuff that is not gold and gold mud. The we torch the mud and it become pure gold nugget.

      Pei Wu, it would be interesting to learn how you handled jewelry pieces with cheap stones on them in the process. Can you elaborate, please?

    • @xyzpeter
      @xyzpeter  Před 8 lety +1

      Thenghee Teh I take out the pieces with diamonds and save it until I have enough to processed with acid. All other piece with CZ, onyx or other non precious material are removed with either pliers or a hammer.

    • @thengheeteh3643
      @thengheeteh3643 Před 8 lety

      Pei Wu,...removing non precious stones from jewelry pieces is a tedious thing to do. My idea is to clear all the stones that stuck around the melted bar with hammer, then brush it with running water....but just not too sure about it. What do you think?

    I don't understand why you are making a 14k bullion out of 14k scrap gold? Is it because a bullion is easier to store?

    • @Fu3R4
      @Fu3R4 Před 9 lety +2

      ganimed1976 he probably doesn't have the ability to easily refine it into 99.9% bullion. Easier to melt it down then sell it to a refinery to have it refined then stamped into pure gold bars to be sold to banks and the like.

    • @xyzpeter
      @xyzpeter  Před 9 lety +4

      After melting all the gold into a bullion, I sell it to the melter as is. Refining it into .999% gold is really expensive.

  • @GuyRWood
    @GuyRWood Před 11 lety

    Don't forget, pure gold is 24 carats so 9 carat gold is only 37.5% gold - there's a whole lot of cheaper metal in there as well.

  • @2007Russdog
    @2007Russdog Před 10 lety

    Doesn't some of the gold stick in the porous parts of the crucible? That would waste quite a bit over time.. Or, am I mistaken?

    • @xyzpeter
      @xyzpeter  Před 10 lety

      Some of the gold probably do stick to the crucible. I asked them to get as much out as possible. When the crucibles are no usable, they process them to get all the gold out of them and keep as profit.

  • @xyzpeter
    @xyzpeter  Před 11 lety

    @RobThePlumber Před 11 lety +1

    Your buying from the wrong people. The pawn shop gold market is like stealing from the public. It is a quick way for thieves to dump off stolen goods. the pawnshops then send it to the refiner as quickly as possible because they know it is stolen! Local pawnshops here pay $200-300 an ounce. That is a crime in itself. the whole market is a sham.
