  • Exploring at Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area where a beautiful and vast wilderness is. I always enjoy coming out here to explore the nature and interesting history. On this adventure I set out to hike along one of the many logging trams here in the forest. They were built during the 1800’s by loggers so they could reach the old and large Cypress trees out here. They would be cut down and hauled to the nearby sawmill at Centralia. Centralia is a ghost town today but during the early 1900’s it was a booming sawmill town. Over 2000 people lived and worked at the town until it was abandoned in the late 1920’s once all the resources were used up. As I venture out here you can’t help but sense the past… I found an old Cypress Tree here that is probably over 500 years old. It’s a tree that was fortunately left by loggers so it’s nice to see it still standing. It’s magical touching the tree and such a peaceful area. You can take the scenic drive through the preserve and park off at any of these trams and explore the areas. Enjoy the adventure and thank you!

So cool seeing you respect that gentle giant cypress. I wish we could go back in time to see what the area looked like before logging! Thanks again for the adventure.

I bet that tree was spared because of the split into two higher up.
