  • The mass shooting at a college campus in Oregon that left eight students and a teacher dead has prompted an international debate about US gun-control laws. But what do people in the rural town of Roseburg think could have prevented the tragedy? The BBC's Anna Bressanin spoke to friends of the victims and other members of the conservative community where guns have always been a way of life.

The only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun is not allowing them to have a gun in the first place...

+Will James- hey its not hard to make a gun, how will you stop them from having one if they can make them.

Too all Europeans who want to lecture Americans on our gun rights: WE WILL NEVER GIVE UP OUR FIREARMS! EVER! There would be revolution in this country if the government tried to take them and FAR more people would die than a few mass shootings. You don't understand our culture when it comes to firearms so just stay out of it. You worry about your own country and let us worry about ours. Thank You.

People who run around with baby's at 18 shouldn't be give guns. They clearly lack a sense of "control".

If you pray to Jesus long enough he will let you weaponize him.

Really? How many mass shootings have you heard of that took place at a gun show? Everyone has guns there!

"Just imagine?" So now it's a hypothetical. You just admitted that that doesn't happen! There are far more responsible law abiding gun owners than not. So stop trying to blame the law abiding citizens. It's not my fault that people get murdered just because I own a gun. Get real.

Your wrong. There are far more guns than people in this country. There are less cars than people in this country. But even so....why aren't you advocating that we outlaw cars? They kill far more people!

+Ralph Zimmermann I don't where you get your numbers but CNN and MSNBC constantly proclaim that there are more than 2 guns per person in America. It's the mantra of the leftists. Look, I don't mind common sense gun law reform. But the taking the extreme of "Ban all guns" is not only an implausible solution because criminals won't cooperate but its also next to impossible to get done. So how about some reasonable solutions from your side? You can't ban them all. You just can't.

+Ralph Zimmermann So perhaps we should tell all of the 18 year olds who have and are currently serving in combat that they shouldn't carry weapons until 21? THAT sounds pretty idiotic doesn't it? The guns aren't the problem, our society is. With the deaths from cars being so close to guns, why aren't you clamoring for cars to be banned. I sense that you're from the UK, so perhaps reading our Constitution and understanding the 2nd Amendment would help. It should be easy to follow since that document came about because the Brits tried to disarm the colonies and we rebelled against the tyranny of King George.
