It's really hard to choose what i want my career to be.
Sometimes I want to be a hairstylist, then a nurse, then suddenly a pharmacist, ... My thoughts change so often. It's so annoying 😂

Sometimes I also feel regret of being a pharmacy student... As people around me used to say "Oh, you are a pharmacy student? Maybe you wanted to become a medical student and couldn't make it so now trying out pharmacy right!? " It annoys me a lot because I had never wanted to become a doctor.. & both of the subject are related... But now I can pacify myself by watching this.

I’ve worked in pharmacy for the past 5 years. I got a pharmacy assistant job at the age of 16. They trained me to work behind the counter and now I’m a dispensary technician. This is not the career I’m choosing for myself (as I am currently at uni studying something else) and I found early on that pharmacy wasn’t going to be my career. If you are young and thinking of doing pharmacy see if you can get a job at a local store and actually work in the place. You’ll know straight away whether you want to spend 5 years at university (for not that much pay). You deal with a lot of different people and do a variety of jobs. You have to be willing to work weekends and late nights if you want to earn a decent wage. Some people love it, and others hate it just like any career. I hope that helps some of you!

I'm currently 21 and have been in the army for just under 3 years. Joined straight after finishing year 12 and to be honest I have hated 95% of it. Too much work politics, your superiors out right verbally abuse you and give you punishments out of spite, it is also a very physically taxing job and you spend a lot of time away from loved ones being called in on your leave and having to go away on exercises. Some people love the sense of adventure and the hands on side, but I found myself very different to the demographic I was surrounded by.
I guess compared to them you could call me the quiet nerdy guy. In high school I performed around average (I went to a decent school, not selective but one of the top non selective ones), I did well for the effort I put in, but of course by the end I only performed average due to apathy and my own immaturity at the time.
I have always been interested in biology, especially natural biology and was looking into uni courses regarding this for when my minimum contract with the army finishes, however I have started to have second thoughts due to the low demand for people in this field.
Since being in defence I have had more interactions than I suppose you could say is usual with the medical system and in the process have been prescribed medications for various temporary illnesses and treatments etc, and I have found myself increasingly interested in how the medications work on the body and have quite enjoyed reading as much as I can about them online to gain a better understanding of what I am using on my body.
A question for you Lisa, or anyone else here who has done pharmacy, would you recommend me to give studying this a go? I would just like a change in my life where I can put my knowledge and intelligence to use doing a job that I have earned by thinking (I am no 99 ATAR genius, but I like to think I have some level of intelligence), not doing pack marches and sweating my way there and one where I am interested in the information I am supposed to retain to be professional at my job. I also of course just want a job where I don't have to travel half way across the country to do, don't get sworn at by supervisors on the daily (of course I understand every job has work politics and friction under stress) and a job where I can leave work at work.
Would going for pharmacy be a move in the right direction or would I be making a silly mistake? (apologies for the drawn out comment).

I'm probably too late, and I'm not someone who graduated pharmacy, I'm just about to finish my first semester and I was about to choose military medicine, my advice is to choose something you like and be realistic at the same time, are you ready to spend god knows how many years with studying so much your head hurts, and you must be precise at your choices, are you interested in any healthcare profession or pharmacy precisely, if you are are interested you are free to ask

I really do love working in retail pharmacy as an assistant, but I honestly feel like the employment opportunities for pharmacists are very saturated now. But because of course selections for second year is coming up soon, I am debating if I should start switching to something else? Going to medical school is nearly impossible for me because my brain probably won't be able to even pass the MCAT. I have thought about business, specifically in analytical analyst, but I'm also wondering if that is worth pursuing? I'm just so lost and so unsure of what I want to do anymore.

Work hours are great because of the flexibility. It was more the ceiling effect, I could see myself becoming less and less challenged over time (compounded with the fact that I wasn't interested in moving into other Pharmacy industries like Pharmaceutics or government), and so I'd become more and more disengaged.

A community pharmacy job can be repetitive and boring.
You hardly get a lunch break...maybe 10 minutes if you are lucky.
Otherwise much easier than becoming a doctor
not as physically demanding as nursing
but u also have to take into account that pharmacy has strict regulations. You must be sharp and in the right mindset always or else a patient can get ill because of your mistake.
Hospital pharmacy jobs are highly competitive
Even to work as an intern...is an amazing opportunity
but work schedule is tough....u see as many as 40 patients a day. A reminder these people are in critical conditions so u have to be on the ball, all the time.
Salary is pretty good and you do get a designated lunch break.

Where will the jobs come from ? The retail is brutal and over saturated . The number of slots for pharmacy schools has doubled in the last 10-15 years, yet more of them continue to open each year. With mergers and acquisitions (CVS + Target, Walgreens + Rite-Aid) and the lack of reimbursements for MTM and NO provider status for Pharmacist ! The big chains have the most hope to get a job in a market with an unemployment crisis. That is how the retail chains take advantage of that and treat us like crap and the brutal long hours on your feet with out a lunch or barley a chance to go to the bathroom pharmacy techs are very few and we have to do a lot of their work since the retail chains want to save money we get very little help and a ton of scripts to fill wile angry customers wait and some are insulting and rude as if we were just some clerk, we are made to dust and do peon labor and do stupid corporate crap non related to what we study so hard for this is alarming and concerning. The growth of pharmacists to be only 3% over the next 10 years. That is roughly 9100 new jobs over the next 10 years. During this time, roughly 150,000 students will have graduated from pharmacy schools and that is assuming no new schools open. THAT IS ALARMING !!!!! $200k+ in loans and no job growth !!
Pharmacy schools are hungry for profit, and to maximize that, some schools will take just about anyone regardless of GPA or PCAT as long as they're willing to sign away $200k+ in loans. THAT IS AN UNEMPLOYMENT CRISIS OF MEGA PROPORTIONS is better to do to PA or NP school more respect and more jobs.

You did such a good job in calculating the number of pharmacists graduating in 10 years. Indeed, there will be 150 000 of them, since 15000 graduate each year. Also, there will be a decline 3% in job market, meaning 9100 jobs will be lost over the next 10 years.

      Julliane Lopez
hi ... so I chose pharmacy!!
i completely understand what you’re going through right now. i hate making decisions (I’m a Libra ♎). so let me help you -
from everything I’ve researched (of corse do your own research i might be wrong):
biomedicine is based on the human body. diseases, diagnostics, treatments.
pharmacy is the study of drugs, everything drug related. how drugs interact with each other and the body.
graduating with a degree in pharmacy will most likely lead you a career as a hospital, industry or as a retail pharmacist. you can be involved in everything from the making of drugs to the dispensing. YOU are a drug expert (basically).
a degree in biomedicine is incredibly broad. to narrow it down the clear pathways I saw were 1) research 2) postgrad medicine 3) become a biomedical scientist. if you choose biomedicine you’d most likely have to go on to do a masters and maybe even a PhD if you want to do research. there are numerous other paths too e.g clinical trials manager or a medical sales rep (again further studies in areas such as business would help).
so, with a degree in biomed you can choose the path you take. two people with this degree could be living completely different lives. with pharmacy MOST people do go down those three areas I mentioned.
someone put it to me this way
-do you want to focus on diagnosing (biomed) or the dispensing if drugs after a diagnosis (pharmacy)
CZcams channels that really helped me were:
      Koreagina A London pharmacist
      And Atousa
(they are based in the UK and I’m irish so it’s pretty relevant to me but I’m not sure where you’re from)
personally why i chose pharmacy was i preferred the career prospects better. while as a course i prefer biomedicine (I’ve always loved biology and I wanted to do medicine originally and biomedicine as a course is obviously very similar to medicine just without the clinical aspect). however pharmacy does have a better (starting) salary and a nice work environment. And I liked the idea of working as a locum pharmacist occasionally.
i struggled to pick and i still am not sure if ive made the right choice.
but they are both good degrees :)

Good for you! What sane person would still want to attend pharmacy school and have $100k's in debt to end up in a dead-end career?
I'll let these news article titles speak for themselves.
"BLS projects 0% growth in pharmacist jobs over the next decade (actually negative) while similar occupations will all grow at a faster than average pace"
Becker's Hospital Review "'We're training our kids for jobs that won't exist"
"HRSA Allied Health Workforce Projections, 2016-2030: Pharmacists. Oversupply projected"
"A Looming Joblessness Crisis for New Pharmacy Graduates "
"Walmart layoff 40% of its pharmacists"
