- Is it possible to take a cheap, entry level guitar, fill it with quality components and transform it into a solid reliable player? That's what the Harley Benton Project aims to find out.
We're going to take this $140 Harley Benton JA-20HH Active SBK, strip it down to the body and the neck, and then fill it with high-quality components. Will it all add up to a solid reliable guitar, or are we just trying to polish a turd?
Refer to Part 2 to see the teardown, installation of the new hardware and the fix for the grounding/noise issue that plagues this model of guitar. - • The Harley Benton JA-2...
Refer to Part 3 where we will be finishing up by installing the electronics and giving the guitar a good playthrough. - • The Harley Benton JA-2...

I love mine
Bought this guitar in october, removed the ground issues and got the neck to feel smooth by scraping some on the neck and on the frets. When I had changed the strings and went into intonation i noticed the neck was twisted from left to right making it really hard to fix.. It's been hanging on the wall since which is a shame cause I actually think it sounds pretty good. Like you said - a beginner shouldn't have to make these changes to a newly bought guitar.
Sucks that you had a twist in the neck. Mine has been great once I did all the modifications. It's a solid player. I think they are a good option as a mod platform, but definitely not beginner friendly.
Pretty cool project, Great to see you Brother hope all is well
Yeah man, I dig builds of all kinds...guitars...guns...whatever. Hope you're well brother
I almost bought this. Thank you. I was already doubting the idea though. Its just so hard to get a jazz master with any humbuckers let alone active pickups. The only other one i could find is the like $1,500 jim root signature.
It does have some issues right out of the box, but it's a pretty good guitar once you put some work into it. I love the way it plays now.
Sounds like a great plan
It's gonna be a fun project for sure!
The irony of playing Unsung 😂😂
Ironic? How do you mean?
i am planning to change to gold bridge and gold tuners
what do you think ? the problem and the look gonna be better ?
Changing the bridge should definitely fix the grounding/noise issue. I don't personally like the look of gold hardware, but I think it should look fine as long as you change the bridge and the tuners together.
