I've been team virgin hair since 1989. I've NEVER had anyone respond to my afro negatively and its fully gray now. First, because no one is allowed to speak to me in a disrespectful manner, especially if it has anything to do with who I am. Secondly, I'm quick to tell folks to mind their own business when it comes to me. I also have never lost a job because of my 'fro, twists, or even my wash 'n go fail.
Gonna be honest here. Team natural since 1981(birth year). My hair is so distinctive that when I walk into work, other black women make a whole entire loud show, telling me my hair is beautiful. And while thank you is an appropriate response while keeping it moving because I got a clock to punch, every. single. day. you see me doesn't warrant a loud, practically screaming aloud, 'look at your hair'. Like, I know. I washed and styled it myself. I groomed myself this morning. I knew what I looked like when I stepped out this morning. It's not new to me. Been established since 1981.
It has gotten so bad, that I've had to pull people aside to tell them to stop. And explain that it's borderline sexual harassment. Men and women alike. I've been followed just cuz folks want to get a closer look. I've been stalked. Singled out. Ive been put in danger because others want to look, feel and see the personality attached to the hair. I've received insulting comments from black women and not knowing how to be taken by white women. Fights instigated. Lies told on me. Sabotage. You name it. It's just out right rudeness and rudeness over HAIR!! BLACK HAIR! MY HAIR!
So, I'm not the sit down and take type. But I do analyze it and then have a conversation about it. When I teach people how to treat me, which gets exhausting, but is a never-ending activity, I let them know how their behavior is rude and I explain, while thanking you for the compliment, all honor, glory and praise belongs to God. Not me. I didn't work to acquire it. It's how I was born.
Those types of conversations usually stops the weirdly positive, sometimes back-handed compliments. It directly holds a mirror up to the persons face and forces them to eat their own insecurities. Tasty!? No? I didn't think so. But that's what these people hurl out at me to chew on and expect me to be gracious that they gave me something.
When a black woman compliments your hair she is not doing it cos she don’t know that’s natural to you or you’ve been blessed enough to have knowledge to sport it. Get your damn attitude out of your ass and say thank you or empathise and let them know they to could have the same if they just knowledge up on their hair. Society is built to not educate black women what’s good for them they have to always fight a battle for it from having no products for a lifetime to having too many expensive empty claim product ripping them off. Now what, they have to deal with attitudes from black women that are lucky enough to have great parents that perhaps kept their hair growing in good condition and long from birth or just good hair in general!! I had great hair when was young but my mum didn’t have a clue and there was nothing on adverts let alone products for our hair. Only now have I got my hair back to long and natural after braids, weave, relaxers, texturise to now natural when we hit Covid period and I won’t be going back from natural and have learned to fall in love with it. Just empathise that they don’t possess the good knowledge and just say thank you. I can understand not wanting people to touch your hair especially if white cos it is insulting and they are coming from a negative ignorant place that they don’t see. And some will touch your hair without even asking. Guarantee if they had a nice hair do or in general they wouldn’t want everyone and anyone touching their hair as if they are an alien, I understand that. As for Ms Stupid saying she’s never lost a job because of her twist like it’s there fault if they did is only because she’s been lucky enough to be around human people and also how times have changed. Back in the days of 80s, 90s people were still monsters and if your hair was not acceptable to their company whether braids or not she would have been let go nicely or used as an excuse any little humanly error would have been blown out of proportion. So you and your attitude “I don’t mess” like you are some top Harvard lawyer or something, well “good for you!” A little more understanding and nicer attitude wouldn’t go a miss as cost nothing cos black people need to support each other especially as women and not look down on those struggling to still climb. As long as we get there is what matters and more black women are seeing the light.😊❤

Every other bIack woman I have spoken to irl has taken my compliments very well and has given me good advice without me even having to ask. We all had amazing, memorable conversations, and they always tell me about how they love learning new things about natural hair.
Here these people are on the internet making us look like some self-centered, short-fused, crabs-in-a-bucket, mean girl individuals that can’t bare to receive a compliment even on a good day, all because they refuse to look inward and consider the idea that, maybe, their inability to receive compliments is *not* everyone else’s problem; that maybe they *shouldn’t* go online and start a campaign to deprive other women of compliments just because *they* feel a way about it. Whatever they were trying to do, I hope these dismissive anecdotes help them in their future.

I've been natural all my 42yrs. I've been doing a daily wash & go over 20yrs. My hair is healthy, shiny, and beautiful! Women have been stopping me in the streets about my hair for years. The daily wash n go is my key to manageable natural hair. I don't use heavy products either, just a leave in conditioner. Drenching my hair in the shower everyday is literally part of my hygiene routine. I can't get into the shower and leave my hair dry. Even when my hair was down my back I did this. I completely agree w Mr Dickey.
Do you let it air dry or blow dry hair? Do you wash at night or morning? How often do you shampoo your hair? I just started wetting my hair every night and I put leave in conditioner and grease in my hair. That works for me and saves time. Sorry for all the questions
@@Neesha242 I'm happy to help! I do my wash n go in the AM & I ALWAYS air dry. I have med porosity, baby fine hair & use a leave in to style, so it dries pretty fast. If I used gels and heavy stylers, it would take all day. In the summer, I shampoo 2-3x per week bc I sweat in my head. When it's cold, 1x per week. My favorite leave ins are Pattern Beauty Palo Santo, Curls Blueberry Bliss, and Cantu Kids when it's cold out. Blueberry Bliss Hair Milk is nice too, but it can weigh my hair down. I use styling products on special occasions when I need hold, but my hair is so moisturized & trained, I get the definition of a gel w a leave in. I also prefer volume. Gel makes my hair flat and look like a Jherri curl. I like it to stand up & have an airy look. I will put grease or oil on top of my leave in when it's cold out, but I don't have to w Cantu Kids.
I use V05 Extra Body Shampoo and Garnier Pure Clean to clarify. Sometimes I use V05 conditioners as leave ins. The Strawberry Moisture Milk is a fave!
This natural hair thing is really simple, but we make it hard. As a kid/teen, I was a model for Luster products, so I understand how marketing works. I was in kiddie perm ads w natural hair! It's a scheme. There's all these products out here making sistas chase a goal, when it's really not the products you use, but the hair you have. All we need is water, conditioner, and an occasional oil.
When ppl stop to ask me what I do to my hair and I tell them, they always say it's bc of my texture. But I don't think so. All our hair needs is moisture.

@@JG_SmileSOBright Thank you. I’m going to try some of those products. I don’t think it’s because of your hair texture either. It’s cool how my hair texture is starting to change just from wetting it and putting leave in conditioner in my hair everyday. I use Cantù repair leave in conditioner and sometimes I’ll use a hair cream. I did use gels, but it creates a barrier on my hair when I want to refresh hair everyday and it causes build up and makes my hair look flat. My hair is to the point where it’s starting to curl with just leave in. I had no idea my hair could change textures or maybe I bought my texture out. I was told we shouldn’t wash or wet our hair everyday, but maybe we should. This is new to me and I’m so happy because my hair is black and shiny now. My hair still has some improving to do, but I’m happy with my progress.

@@lisajackson3743 yes, don't touch it while it's wet. I use my hand to fluff it out after it dries.
Anthony is even more affable and honest in person and going to see him twice completely changed my relationship with my hair.

He is awesome! He gave me my first cut after I did my big chop back in 2013. He not only cuts to precision he educates you about your hair as he is doing it. He taught me everything I know about my wash and gos! ❤❤❤

@@nicolegodspower17 It was back in 2013 but he was in NYC in Hells Kitchen neighborhood. I think the salon may still be there but look it first because I have since left New York and don't know for sure where he is now.
I had the same experience around the same time. His knowledge & the educating is a game changer.

12:20 that’s why I love me some Aussie moist ❤ he’s not lying consistent wash n gosh changed my hair texture to the point that I get into arguments when ppl say my hair is long because it’s looser. I have to show them pictures when my hair was clearly 4b-4c and they become speechless. I don’t use heat at all. It’s like my ringlets were jumping for joy at all the moisture.
I experienced this too. I thought I had damaged hair when I saw curls behind my head until I realised I had two patterns. I am now back on locs tho because I went natural on locs and tried loose hair , I find that locs are my thing but I love Anthony Dickey and recommend him all day and after 10 years , even on locs, I wash my hair often max 7 days.
When I went natural the first time, after relaxing for years. It was before the natural community was so huge. I didn't know what to do with my hair. I did W&G styles all day everyday! My hair would always be reset daily! My hair was not fragile and it did not fall out. In fact, it grew super fast! Maybe it was because I was still in my 20's at the time, but in about two years, I went from about 1 to 2 inches of hair to hair that was butt length when stretched. My hair was in such good condition, I didn't really need a trim! Unfortunately, I relaxed it and lost some of my length retention. But, I went natural again a few years later and stayed natural. I most admit that this time around, I haven't been doing my W&G style as much. I do not wash my hair everyday. My hair is still long, but I noticed that it did not grow half as fast as it did when I did wash it everyday! So, Anthony Dickey may be truly on to something! I might consider rethinking the way I do my hair!
He is so awesome. He doesn’t know me but I learned how to do my hair by hearing an old interview he did. I then bought products from him. His information he gives is such a gem!
He is not wrong about the leave-in. If you focus on moisture, your hair will do whatever you want it to. Prep your hair with moisture and then live your life, within reason.
When he said he would send you what you need for the wash and go and set you up, why did I get excited like he was talking to me personally?!?

I did his method for a summer and my hair was soooo hydrated and moisturized. I’ve now gone over to locs. Lol but I still use his blow out method for my daughter before I do her protective styles. Her hair is sooo long because of it.

yes! what pamela said. He mentions it in this video as well. out your favorite conditioner/cream and oil (hefty amount) in your hair then blow it out. This preps the hair for a protective style. I just came here to report, that I'd used Hair Rules products back in 2016, gone through many many hair styles, cuts, chops, and braids for several years since then and in Sept 2023 I started with Hair rules again as I remembered the love of my curls with Dicky's method before. Years later and it's all still the same glory glory glorious curls. And he is so right how it changes your hair. It's giving that Tina Turner blonde layered "simply the best" album cover look for me! Great timing. I am two yrs in and i am challenged.😅 It was time to go natural because i have been I HAVE BEEN RELAXING FOR 40 YEARS. I am training for a triathlon which is requiring me to swim 5 days a week. After 2 yrs my hair is finally growing and extremely thick just like when I was a kid.😊
The more I swim daily and apply conditioner, my hair began to grow really well.

Enjoyed this video. Learned how to proper use conditioners and products to use for protective styles. . I remember his comment that your hair should be in better condition at the end your protective style than before the protective style ( 🤯).
I love my shrunk hair. It's the only time it looks thick and full since my hair has always been naturally thin.

I went natural 10 years ago but I wore locs. Now that I'm wearing just my natural hair, it has been more nightmare than anything else for SO many reasons but I refuse to give up because I know it is what is best for my hair. Let me tell you something!!!! I met Dickey over a decade ago at an expo. He took the time to
educate me on natural hair. I later booked with him for a cut and wash & go. The knowledge I received while in his chair regarding MY hair is priceless and absolutely rings true till this day!!! I achieved the best wash & go with his guidance and the proper products. ❤
My grandmother told me in the early 70s "The shrinkage is the truth" it shows the health of your hair and she would focus on our hair health based on wash&gos❤🙏

I've been on a natural hair journey since 2017....seen some growth and breakage along the way....but now I seem to be at a length where my hair just looks the same as far as growth. I've watched several hair Pros on CZcams, but this is my first time seeing your channel. This was so informative and eye opening. I just cut my dreads because I was tired of them looking dry and wanted a fresh start. The big chop has me hunting down products to get my 4c hair moisturized. I'm gonna try the wash and gos because I was taught to wait around a week to wash but I'm finding twice a week is better than once a week. So maybe everyday is even better!

Oh my goodness it is soooo good to see him❤️ Iyou know he is right… since I decided to go natural in 2017-after my beautician moved away- I found the more often I wet my hair & applied my conditioner then detangled … the prettier my curl pattern became - my curls are very different now since I have grey hair-but I am ready for this regime!!!!!

Baby girl I am soooo late to all of this. I have been natural for 3.5 years now and Nevahhh knew about this technique. I just got in from work @8am jumped in the shower performed this wash and go. Sat under the dryer and am now ready for a nap by 9:30!!!!! Whatttttt?!? When I tell you never will I ever go back to anything else!! No ma’am!!! Thank you ever so much for this jewel!!!
I knew nothing about this until recently. My mother (3C) and sisters (4A, 4B) have been natural for about 10 years, but truthfully I didn't pay attention to their hair conversations. But this was very educational.
Thank you for this. I remember watching him walk you through the method a couple of years ago. It's cool now to have this interview that preceded that. Have to say that I transitioned during the pandemic, out of necessity. It was rough at first! Since then I have tried ALL the methods for wash n' go and Dickey's works the best for me. I can do it every day or every other day (or on occasion every 3 days). My curls behave better when it is consistently moisturized with water and well-conditioned. I can dry with a diffuser in 10-15 minutes, or sit under a hooded dryer. It helps dryer if you use a mousse. I use UFD plus Miche gel to foam mousse for a quick set in the shower and a quick dry. It took me a while to learn to use ENOUGH product Need a lot of conditioner (I just use a cheap one) for the co-wash and plenty of gel/mousse to lock in the style. I'm a 4a and this method makes my hair care routine flawless.

Hindsight-I regretted the day I ever had creamy crack in my hair yet I’m glad I’ve been natural since 2012, and will never go back to relaxers. I loved my big fro back in the day and didn’t love it enough and jumped on the relaxer band wagon. So true about hair products when I grew up with Prell shampoo-yep I know that name hair product is foreign to most 😂
OMG! Not Prell! 😂 remember back in the day when they told us to avoid the three P’s? Prell, Pert, and Permasoft! We did not care and used it anyway! I remember! Back then I loved Finesse and Faberge Organics. The smell! Ohhh smelled sooo good! I can’t wait to start this! 🙌🏽

I was forced to embrace my natural hair in 1970 when I was in first grade. My mother chased my sister and me around the house with scissors and shears and forcibly cut off our ponytails and made us wear short Afros. Mind you, we lived in an all- white neighborhood and went to an all-white school.
That trauma aside, besides occasional trims, my haircare was left entirely up to me. By 3rd grade, a family friend would sometimes give me cornrows. In 4th grade, I begged a friend’s mother to press my hair. I wore that press for about a month. 😂By 5th grade, I’d set aside a few dollars and bought a hot comb that, as I recall, cost about $5. I got some hair grease and taught myself to press my own hair and sometimes I pressed my sister’s too.
I said all that to say I’ve been doing my own hair my whole life. When I grew up and was making my own money I started going to salons because I could, and, as a Black woman in the 80s, that’s what we did. By 25, I was really fed up with what I was getting at the salon and I was tired of adhering to a European, white beauty standard. I cut my hair off and wore it short *and natural* for the better part of a decade. It was great because I was a young single mother who worked full time. On top of that, I’d never felt sexier and more beautiful.
Since starting my hair journey in 2016, I realize now how much I *didn’t* know about hair.
But on the subject of wash-n-goes, technically, I was doing that decades ago. Now, because my hair is SO long, they’re impractical for me because the tangling is insane. I really never wear my hair down unless it’s straightened. 🥰
White girls and Latin girls (wash & go daily): none of them have bronchitis or phenomena 😂😂😂😂....can't stop laughing

Speaking of cheap but good conditioners……i went straight back to Hollywood beauty and Queen Helena 3.99 20 oz jar the carrot or tea tree Deep conditioner…..my hair is thriving

When I began my natural hair journey Anthony was the first person that popped up on my internet feed, for some reason... and I thank God he did❣Water always "fixed" my hair, but when I told ppl who looked like me, they thought I was crazy and told me that water was going to take my hair out! you know whats crazy some of these stylist or braiders be like no product in ur hair to us type 4 girlies an its like girl thats gonna cause the hair to tangle, now i finally understand why my hair would snag during blowouts like it was interesting on side would glide through and then the other snaggs like crazy its because one side is moisturized and the other side is lacking that lubrication to allow the blow dryier to fly through, im done listening to thes hair stylists who do not care about black hair just your money. thank you for having him on to speak on this because its been quite a journey for me had stylist kill 3 years of care and truly it scared me from heat and any type of manipulation that i wasnt doing, people dont show care to hair that isnt theirs and its sad i feel like those are not true stylists

I reverted back to team natural in 2012 and never looked back! I love my wash-n-go’s!! I use organic and water-soluble quality products and my hair loves it ❤. I can get 5-days out of my wash-n-go’s. I don’t use cheap products with the plastic and junk fillets that build up on my hair.

Until this video, I have rarely thought about doing a wash n go. I have just believed that it is not for my hair. Now, I am very curious. I am interested in trying it for the experience and to see how this will work for me. I just need to wrap my mind around the daily washing, lol. I also am thinking of a time I don't need to leave my house for 3 -4 days, lol - because I really can't see myself doing this more than 3 days at a time. Thanks for sharing this interview with us and for the other videos where you give your honest opinions and thoughts of you wash and go experience using the A.D. method.
I recently had to change to acne safe hair products and they are not cheap, but I still use his method because it works.

Not all black women. I do nothing but wash and go. I honestly don’t have the time to do anything else. I also like the feeling. I’m African. We weren’t allowed to use heat in our hair until we’re older or for a special event. Maybe. We got our hairs braided always. And I don’t mean extensions. We weren’t allowed as we were too young.
