- One of the most beloved dishes in Myanmar is lahpet thoke, or pickled tea leaf salad. Read my full post here: migrationology.com/2014/09/lah...
The northern part of Myanmar is an area where tea originated - so it’s no wonder that tea plays a major part in the social culture of the country. But most of the time when you think about tea, you think of it only as a beverage, something to drink - and throughout most of the world, this is true. But in Myanmar, one of the most famous things to eat is actually tea, known as lahpet.
Laphet thoke is a very common dish throughout Myanmar, and the base and most important ingredient are pickled tea leaves. The leaves are mixed with tomatoes, and a few different other ingredients like toasted peas and nuts, and then mixed with a dressing made from peanut oil and a few seasoning light spices. The salad is extremely delicious, and the pickled tea leaves have a unique, slightly bitter, and slightly sour component to them, with a nice chewy texture. Laphet thoke makes a wonderful snack when you’re drinking tea too - so drinking tea and eating tea at the same time is delicious!
In Yangon you’ll be able to find laphet thoke, and it’s popular to eat at small street-side stands, but that being said, not all tea stalls serve it. You have to look for a stall that has a number of plastic tubs at the front, filled with all the ingredients used to prepare the tea leaf salad. If you see the plastic tubs, you’ll known they served lahpet thoke. Sit down on one of the miniature Myanmar plastic stools, order it, and you can sit and sip on tea while you wait for your salad to be mixed up.
When we made this video, I was in Yangon during the monsoon rainy season. It wasn’t raining when we sat down to eat, while I was eating, the rain all of a sudden started pouring down, and soon we had a small river flowing right through the street food stall - so we actually had to get up and stand so we wouldn’t float away! That’s part of the fun and excitement of eating street food in Myanmar. Along with the tea leaf salad, lahpet thoke, we also ordered a plate of gyin thoke, pickled ginger salad - another delicious salad especially if you love ginger.
Thank you very much for watching this video, hope you enjoyed it.

Lahpet thoke, or pickled tea leaf salad, is one of the most popular and famous dishes in #Myanmar . For this video, we enjoyed a delicious plate, and then got flooded out of our table!
#Travel #food #Yangon
Mark Wiens love the table and chairs. The best places I ate at in China were actually with the same type of kids table sets out on street.
+Mark Wiens Bro 1000 kyat for 2 salad is kind of expensive.. I don't remember each one of it costing 500 kyat when I was a kid, but things can change very fast in Myanmar so I am not 100% too sure.
Mark Wiens u should visit again this year

hey mark, so i just wanted to say that i love traveling and i've never really done too many video journals of my travels but watching yours are just refreshing. your passion for traveling and just simply eating the foods and not being too picky with the foods just definitely shows in these videos. So, on to my question, Have you ever been deterred from visiting a country due to suspected civil unrest? I mean, as far as myanmar, it's been depicted in the media that it isn't exactly extremely safe to travel there. also, have you ever had any concerns for your safety in the countries/cities/areas you've visited? I am usually one to throw caution to the wind when I travel, so I just had to ask about your point of view on these things. thanks.
Looks great 😮
My craving for laphet thoke brought me here 😭

Hi Mark! My daughter got me hooked on our videos..anyway, my husband and I are going to be in Bangkok from Dec. 6-9 and would love to be able to meet up for an awesome meal. We have an excursion on the 9th but would be available for a "meet up" on either the 7th or 8th. Any chance? We would love it!
For a second there i thought your video title was a typo.. That looks awesome, eating on a downpour : )
Hey toastybeer thanks for watching. Yes that rain comes fast!
Oooooo you've finally got a chance to taste lapat thoat.. Yummy... I usually love eating the salad with lots of white rice :) or you can of course eat it on its own but I prefer to incorporate rice! Us Asians and rice lol!

Hi Mark, it’ll be great if you do the tour again in Myanmar. Things are so different and clean now compared to 5 years ago. There are so many regional food that you could try in different parts of the country. It’ll be more interesting than staying in cities. Just a suggestion😊
+ massive shootings :')
Makes me salivate ! Looks yummy!!!
Thanks Tacha
watering my mouth......
We've just have Laphet Toke with added dried shrimp and fish paste (ngapi)
9 years later, I wish I could visit Myanmar
Ahhhh looks divine
wow... my whole mouth just filled with saliva
I miss the monsoon rains of the tropics. There it will rain more in an hour than it will here in 2 days straight but you rarely go a day without at least some sun. Unlike here where it can be overcast for 6 months or more.
many thx Mark....from Oz....i have a question for ya..when u visit burma, was it in a rainy season? whats the brand of your shoes n was it waterproof top n bottom pls? thx
“You get the tomato-y flavor from the.. tomato” haha
I absolutely love that you put the prices in USD so we can see the bargains you get for all of those great meals you eat!
Good to see a nice neighborhood in Myanmar, my last view of Burma was from the Rambo movie.

Most salads from Myanmar are vegan with peanut 🥜
What a great video, congratulations Mark!

I'm from Mexicali, Baja California in the north of the country with U.S.A. border, in one of the hottest cities in the wolrd!

Can you make jeow bong to dip green mangos?
It’s very delicious 🤤 I wanted to eating there with you 😄

Lapet thote is very popular in Myanmar. Every myanmar shopping site you go to you will see tons of it. My parents usually order them from a site. They are prepackaged btw.

Hey Diego Jaramillo great to hear from you. Yes, I did travel to Ecuador when I was in university, I did a summer program studying in Tena, in the Amazon. I really enjoyed my time, but would love to go back again (that was about 8 years ago). What part of Ecuador are you from? Hope you have a great trip!
We enjoyed on your video ,,, Mark,, very great.. :)
In Myanmar they usually prepare lahpet in more conventional way which is similar to Chinese Hakka community style which called Thunder Tea known as Lei Cha 雷茶.
well done mark!
Thank you KangaM
There’s mores Alots lot lots of things to eat In Myanmar, trust me they’re delicious!!
Yuzana is one of my favorite brand instant Lahpet thoke.
Yuzana has been banned in many countries for their use of cheap chemical dye auramine o not permitted for the food industry instead of the traditional food dye.
@@BabyBuddhaG bro it because of the rohingya crisis or Myanmar was hated
@@BabyBuddhaG and also no chemical
@@portmafiaexecutive4099 well not all products were banned as far as I remember. If it's true as you said then it's very sad to know that we as human beings are stuck with caste and religion. I wish if everyone become a global citizen and treat each other respectfully despite of whatever God we chose to pray to. Peace bro
@@BabyBuddhaG yeah the rohingya are fine now
Mark where is the nice intro song??
You make me so hungry.
Thanks for watching jackie sandoval
I love how i can actually recognize lahpet thoke, its a pickled tea salad haha, i eat it once or twice in 2 weeks
Cool to hear that Soe lin, do you live in Myanmar?
Mark Wiens no I don't I live in Indiana
I'm a huge fan of ginger. Was the pickled ginger anything similar to Japanese style ginger? Is sounds like it's less flavorful.
Hey Bobby B glad you love ginger too. I think it's similar, but not sweet like the Japanese pink ginger, this one is more just sour.
lahpet thoke and hot tea on a rainy day. what more can you ask for
I agree John Thompson, it's a good combo.
I love that :-)
Most stalls don't have MSG seasoning.
Can anyone share Jai recipe with me thank you
What is the brown powder she put in?
i love your life ... wish I could travel world
A delicious and healthy salad do not need any MSG to ruin it. Many people do not know the danger of long term consumption of MSG creates havoc to the brain.. Just make sure every time when you order the salad, just remind the vendor not to put any MSG in your salad. You can then safely enjoy your salad.
It is a really unique and funky flavor!! I love it. Too bad they sell it at thai/Burmese fusion restaurants near me for about $7. Prob will have to learn myself!
Hey mchu5 glad you love it too. Yah, you should try to make it!
It is absurdly expensive. Might as well it at a market if you can, and even there be prepared to spend some money.
+MarkWiens The salads look delicious. But, I wonder, have you ever get food poisoning from the street food ?
Yummmmm-my!
Yeap that is best food yall no matter wherever u go u wanted that n we manage to get it anyway. Best of the best
mark--i ask again. how did you get your Myanmar visa on your US passport? please advise on how you did it....would like to know. your UTUBE vids on Myanmar is one reason why i wish to visit that country.....mahalo---don
U should try traditional foods of other states in Myanmar. Trust me~ u will like all of them
P.s - i'm from Myanmar
Can you share the recipe for tea leaf salad? I absolutely loved it.
I've always wondering if street foods are hygienic or not >
It all depends Sprinto Silences, but the same could be said about any kitchen / restaurant around the world. What I like about street food is that you can see everything and make a judgement for yourself if it looks alright of not.
IT TASTE GOOD ORDER IT
😊
Do you pre-film these videos?
Hey ***** yes, this video was filmed about 1 month ago. I keep an archive mainly because I publish 2 videos per week, and just to stick to my schedule.
There are different versions of Laphet Thoat as well as Ginger salad.
You will also like Pone Yi Gyi Thoat from Bagan.
I loved that tea leave salad
