Not sure that works any longer in 1.0, but I have a tip for the spells: If you want to use two long-range spells and don't care in which order those are created (e.g. the frost-bat and the blood-bolt), you can map them to the same key. I used the middle-mouse button, which I have on a thumb-button on my mouse, to spam out all spells at once in the past.
someone explain to me the fact that every other manufacturing thing has an input and an output, but the workbench doesn't have the same mechanism? that simply makes no sense to me.
The work bench, and other stations like the workbench, are not automated. They'll only ever make one thing per click, so they don't have an input buffer because they don't really need one. However, they are able to use materials in the output buffer, so it kind of serves as both when want to keep some common crafting materials quick at hand.
Using an MMO mouse is perfect for games like this.
