  • 'Inside The State Rooms Of Windsor Castle With Dan Snow'
Windsor Castle has a legendary connection to the British monarchy: the longest-serving royal palace in the whole of Europe.
Ever since the days of William the Conqueror, the castle has dominated this strategic point on the banks of the River Thames, overlooking west London. Over the next millennium kings and queens would invest lavish amounts in its development.
As a result, today it is one of the most magnificent sites in the British Isles. In this video, curator Kate Heard provides Dan Snow with an exclusive tour of the castle's beautiful state rooms and interior.

I worked at Windsor in 1970 my father was a stonemason
We worked most of the summer there replacing gargoyles and damaged stonework on the prince of wales tower
Being in a restricted area of the castle I got to see the everyday going’s on of the royal family and on one rainy day as I was getting stone reddy for the hoist the queen came walking with her corgi’s and asked how old I was
I traveled all over the roof’s of Windsor
There are lots of great stonework hidden up there
Anyway just thought I would mention it
As I was watching this it brought back memories

Hi Eric Yes she had about four I believe
      Well behaved
Well they didn’t nip me anyway
I was 15 in 1971 she told me to be careful and look after myself
I also had to go into there quarters and remove any cement which had fallen on the window ledges
In the summer princess Anne would sunbathe on the lawn outside of the indoor pool in the garden
We worked there for 4 months so I got to see lots of private moments of the royal family
My father was a stonemason and we worked on most of the monuments of England
St. Paul’s,Buckingham palace , Westminster abbey
One day another mason will find notes I left under gargoyles and statues
      Thanks for reaching out Eric
      Cheers 🍻

Windsor Castle is somewhat legendary in my American family. My uncle Edward, born in 1906, was a guest there for about 6 months in the mid-1920's. Much as George IV has been derided, he certainly was a great art connoisseur and had real artistic vision. Windsor Castle was much dilapidated when he became King and his renovations were its saviour, making the marvelous palace that it is today - and indeed the Queen's favourite residence. One of the grandest and most spectacular residences in the world. This building to me reflects the great history of the British People. The only building I thought was in the league of Windsor was Versailles. However, Versailles has no soul because the monarchy is gone in France. Windsor is a living entity that has no comparison in the world. How blessed we are that through wars and fires Windsor still shines like a beacon.

    • @paulwusteman9963
      @paulwusteman9963 Před 10 měsíci +2

I was in Versaille yesterday and was sadly under whelmed. The difference in the upkeep of the Palaces is striking and when there I said to mt friends that the difference is that we still have a Monarchy. People go out of their way to impress the Monarch and Queen Elizabeth had exacting standards and always inspected the State Dining Table before state occasions to ensure it was up to her standards...it shows. Sadly Versailles has bureaucrats and it shows.

Wow, this was awesome. No wonder the now-late Queen Elizabeth II loved this place, and was so devastated in her 'Horrible Year' when it caught on fire. She was so devastated to think that such a precious royal castle & it's belongings could be destroyed under her watch. But, her legacy ("Elizabeth the Great", maybe?), it left secure & in tact, better than ever. Well done, to the Queen. Now for King Charles III to keep it in prestine condition.
About Henry VIII's armour, I watched a documentary a couple of weeks ago, about how with the increase in weapon technologies, armour had to not only be toughened (& these experts actually worked out the method for themselves of hardening metal, and even how to decorate it in patterns & colours - all for the the richest of wearers). Also, armour stopped being flat against the body, but poking out, to look like a big belly gut. This helped, with hardened metal, to deflect the round bullets away from the body, away from vital organs, and this outer layer (the fat-look) helped to allow a safety space between the body & the outer layer of armour. Even before guns & bullets, bows & arrows turned into deadly crossbows, piercing any basic armour... before the hardening of the armour gave better protection. It was fascinating. I watched the doco twice, just to grasp how fascinating this knight armour had improved, before it was phased out.

Was there fourtimes as a visitor during my time at Goodwood, working there at the Rolls Royce Plant. Never have seen so much fine History in one Place. There are so many Museen in Britan, but to stay right in the Heart of the British Anarchie is something, making this location very special. Good Bless the King, and save all that Items remaining of his great Ancestors.

I like to know how many Living quarters are there? How many people get to live in the living quarters? What does some of the living quarters
look like? I want to get the feeling what it was like back in the day, also today, a comparison, and coming and goings like you see in the movies about Kings and the people that lived there. This is sterile, more just showing the objects. I guess I’m looking for living, eating, sleeping, parties, business of real life castle living.

Magnificent! I've come to understand through my readings and this video that Windsor Castle is really at the heart of the Monarchy and not Buckingham Palace. And with a million visitors a year at some number of pounds each the tours must go to making up a great deal of the funds needed for the upkeep and staffing!

I love these huge old castles but the practical side of me wonders how they manage to keep them heated. I'm sure many of them are very cold and drafty in places. I can see steam or hot water radiators in some spots in this castle but some of the largest halls in this and probably most other castles have only a single fireplace.....hardly enough to get the job done I would think.

    • @nuntana2

It is centrally heated and, liker the other palaces, has a vast combined heat & power generator system. Costs vast amounts to heat. If they didn't, furnishings and artworks would quickly be degraded.

As I recall this was the late Queen's favourite residence . No wonder she was so upset about the fire in 1992 , It has been beautifully restored and I'm so glad the lovely Queen lived long enough to enjoy it again after the restoration . Rest in peace Your Majesty .

Great video. One thing I kept thinking when it was mentioned "before it looked like this..." with the stairs moving, bricked up walls, etc to have artists depictions of what that would have looked it. I kept trying to imagine but the camera moved too quickly to properly freeze a frame and it was all sort of glossed over.

I want to visit Windsor Castle so badly that I can feel the tugging in my soul! I would LOVE to visit Balmoral, Sandringham and BP as well, but Windsor Castle is to me, THE #1 place! I wanted to one day just catch even a glimpse of her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth, sadly that will never be. If I lived in England or even Scotland it would maybe be somewhat easier to travel to these places, but being in America, not so much at all. I envy the British people and the amazing history your beautiful country holds.
