- 10 minute interview with Tomas Kalnoky of Streetlight Manifesto from the Rock N Roll Super Show (Episode 39).
Watch as this guy who supposedly loves Streetlight Manifesto ask Tomas awkward questions after awkward questions. JUST GET TO 99SOR! He does towards the end, and Tomas basically gives away that you can expect the cover album out in September and an album of originals next Spring.
Highlights:
0:29 - Tomas cringes, bites his lip, then smiles at the interviewer calling them a 'ska' band.
0:56 - Pwned by Tomas
1:44 - Ouch.
2:14 - Ska bands are known for goofy lyrics, not happy, especially Reel Big Fish.
3:35 - He admits it.
5:06 - Why even bother talking about this? It's like bringing up someone's past marriage in a conversation with them.
6:50 - Another stupid question...
7:35 - 99SOR, thanks for taking 7 minutes and 35 seconds to get around to it.
7:58 - Part 2 of 99SOR for SLM (or maybe BOTAR)?
There was 20 seconds more to this video (but it has to be 10:00)...he just talks about how they look like normal guys visiting Warped Tour whereas the "fashion-core" bands are like celebrities. - Hudba
It's crazy when you see a singer that sounds WAY different when talking normally. His voice sounds sore.
I don't know why people keep calling Tomas a dick from what I've seen in interviews he just seems like a quiet individual but then again I don't know the guy and I could be totally wrong all I know is his music kicks ass
The tour that Tomas is talking about as a great opportunity had to be the one with Reel Big Fish and Less than Jake. That was the best fuckin tour ever, went to see Less Than Jake in Allentown then went again in Rochester for Streetlight. That was the day I started loving Streetlight more than any other band.
That twitch in Tomas' eye when someone calls streetlight "ska"
Tomas K says it himself, theyre one and only and they are deeper and more meaning full than anything before, long live streetlight
i just used this video to pown some1 in an agruement. i was saying streetlight isnt ska and this video just proved it. thanks for uploading it =)
whos that guy without a hat that says hes in streetlight?
They're not ska. They're not punk. They're Streetlight mother fuckin' Manifesto.
I love this man, he is amazing, really. His music is epic, he seems to genuinely have fun with what he does, and his lyrics are spot-on, always.
I do have a question, I remember he wrote the song "Hokum all ye faithful" with Sycamore Smith, and I wonder whether he hates Christians. I would be very sad if so, I'm cool with Atheists but I never enjoy receiving open insults about faith. Though Toh Kay doesn't really seem the type to be angry about it, more just a questioner, which is cool. Just curios
(BTW, favorite album of all is Hands that Thieve)
+bsallee99 He did not write that song with Sycamore smith. He only covered it.
he hates the belief, not the christian. I don't think that he would because he is smart and doesnt label people
Its funny because the record is coming out literally 6 years from then.
I love that term Fashioncore....never heard it before this but it's so fitting
"We're finishing up the covers record right now, and as soon as that's done, and Warped Tour is done, we've got a couple short tours and then we're taking a hiatus to record the next set on the 99SOR for SLM (or maybe BOTAR)."
That's essentially what he said. What I thought he meant was it would be finished by around/just after WT, then they are going on that short tour - the one that starts Sep 17th...why I said it would be out in September?
I'm hoping the first 12/13 songs will be released by 2014, but that may be a lot to ask. I think we will definitely see it by May 2019.
Lol nope
One time I hung around after a concert and met the band. We all hung out in the ally behind the venue chit chatting and whatnot but Tomas just went back into the bus. Everyone else was a good time tho!
I love him so much.
He might be one of the top ten people
He's in my top 5. Hahaha.
@@uhmkeri top 3 actually.
HAHAHAH, how deflated the dude gets when TK mentions how much warped has changed in recent years.
when will 99 songs of revolution (by streetlight manifesto) be released?
Finally, the perfect genre!
***** He hasn't really contradicted himself at all. Going off what you said, there is a recurring theme of him not liking to label the band. He said if he had to label it, it would be ska/punk. Notice the "if he had to." This implies that he doesn't want to, but did anyway for the sake of the interview. This goes along with this interview where he says it is very much punk rock but there is definitely ska influence. Those two genres combined usually make ska/punk I think.
The main idea I've gotten from all his interviews is that they write what they want to write. They don't try to make their songs punk or ska or jazz, they just write. Whatever comes out is what comes out. It is obviously influenced by the music they do/have listened to and enjoy, but they don't actively try to write in a certain style.
“Fashioncore” so true.
Dec 3 2016 I see him
ahah. I love the guys face when he's saying how everything on warped tour is basically complete garbage. Which I 100% agree with. ahah
Crazy to see Tomas consider nofx as an inspirational band seeing as him and fat mike are more or less polar opposites
Dito on the black sheep thing. I'm not 100% complaining b/c a) I always manage to find bands that I do like on Warped (even if they have only like 20 people watching them) and scratch out an great time b) Besides actual specific concerts, I have never even known what its like to go anywhere, let alone a festival, where I like all, or even most of the music so I have developed a tolerance to hearing music I dislike on the stage next to me. I'm just happy to find music I like at all.
I don't know, maybe I heard it earlier in the video, I'm not going to rewatch it again, but I guess what I meant was it will be finished by September."
Toh Kay is awesome, he has been with other awesome ska bands and his current is the best. Genre doesn't matter either to me... It sounds freaking awesome any way you look at it.
7:47 - 8 :47 HELL YES
where is the rest..... ?
even though he says they don't really consider themselves ska, i agree with you. especially after somewhere in the between.
the interveiwer keeps intterrupting tomas
I don't care what you call this music It is still amazing
Streetlight = Upbeat Pop-punk? Wooooooooooooooooow.
Can't believe you just said that...
??? Where did you get that ???
They are definatly ska influenced, but they aren't straight up ska. He even says they basically play what feels right, and if it's like ska then whatever.
Completely agree. However the questions didn't help lead the interview anywhere either.
god right here
Why did you write in the video's info that "Tomas basically gives away that you can expect the cover album out in September".
4 years breh
@xpredox I agree, I met him, very nice guy.
Just found out hes from czech republic, and im czech. Way bigger fan now lol
"running in place"
@televisewhatyouwant He admits that they complicate everything - miss deadlines, never communicate, etc...
Man... I'd have his babies. I'm a guy. I don't care. I'd find some way.
Man that interviewer seemed so misinformed on what Streetlight is as a band. Thomas abhors the idea of classifying them into one particular limiting genre for the simple fact that he wants fans to realize that Streetlight is more of a melting pot of influences from their own lives. The horns and overall ska influence is there because he likes the sound, while the high speed suits his punk influence.
The whole Catch 22 issues being brought up was really ridiculous and I think it was more of a
Beard Fight!
There is a certain timing to ska. It is its own genre of music that has a very specific style. Punk rock plus horns does not equal ska.
or Where Have You Been
Nice job Meatwad!
this video fucking never loads for me.
mad caddies are pirate rock.
I still cannot fathom why people still call streetlight ska
I think he meant in sound and style, also they do have some very upbeat happy tunes. Calm down and give the guy a freakin break.
@Brick1993
apparently this guy know streetlight's music better than tomas kalnoky
Does Tom have an accent?
Aaron Saber He's Czech-born, so I wouldn't doubt it.
@RdSoxFan618 all aside, it's an amazing video and song.
punk ska AKA spa
who cares if he's a little narcissistic, the man's a genius.
Whats up with the sunglasses? Seriously?
thomas didnt give two shits about the ska bands in warped tour whoop! whoop!
Streetlight Manifesto =/= Ska. I'm not sure why no one ever gets that.
@CabboPearimo8 Boooo to your opinion. The lyrics are so much more enlightening then other bands out there
sorry man.
i stand corrected.
@bwfeliciano Made me lol. :D
People like you are exactly who he is referring to.
i think nardwaur would do a funny interview with streetlight lol
They follow the ska timing A LOT for a "not ska" band.
up beat pop punk*cough cough*Duuuude *cough* you didn't just say that.
I don't think you can say Streetlight Manifest isn't ska. I just don't.
Punk SKa
@RdSoxFan618 Well he does have a big hairy beard/mane.
Best ska band ever. Along with BOTAR, Tomas' side project. TOMAS= GENIUS
reel big fish happy? dont think so plus aaron is a pessimist and tomas is an optimist
reel big fish's lyrics are terribly hateful. ( at least a lot of them ) i dont see why he says theyre happy when it comes to lyrics
more like SKAmas. hahahah
To the purist, it isn't ska, but those purists are like OMGLOL NOT SKATALITES NOT SKA LOL...to me, they have a very more ska-ey sound than a Ramones sound.
This guy doesn't know shit about ska bands, RBF is probably one of the darkest ska bands out there, just put to happy music.
lol not fucking even
Benji Owen Go actually read the lyrics, they all have a happy up beat sound to them, but most of their lyrics are pretty cynical
It's just trendy to hate on RBF. I listen to a lot of Ska bands so it's not like I'm a RBF fanboy. Aaron definitely enjoys writing happy sounding songs with cynical and sad lyrics. It's been like that since their first album, especially through Cheer Up!, as Aaron was going through depression.
Despite how Tomas is saying they're not a ska band, there's no denying the ska influences. A strong horn section, prominent bass line, and the style of guitar playing all point toward this. Though the punk rock influences are much more prevalent than with other third-wave ska bands.
To be honest, I don't really care. You do however, have those freaks who are like, Streetlight Manifesto isn't ska? Then I'm not listening to them...I only listen to ska. Those are ridiculous, but in all honesty, I listen to ska, I listen to punk, I listen to all sorts of rock, some rap...only genres I really can't stand is R&B and country.
@CabboPearimo8 BLASPHEMY!
nope i think they are ska
Haha he said RBF's lyrics are happy when more than half of their songs are about hating people.. x)
@M15CY I was being sarcastic...people need to get off my d.
to me punk kinda died but came back as ska
All the Christian bashing is wack now.
thomas is too full of himself to admit he is in a ska band. ska music is generally very simple (streetlight manifesto being an exception) but i dont understand why he cares so much... they make great music, denying they play ska is just dumb. its hard to respect a guy like him
