Shanalotte may have had a bunch of content cut but I still lover her more than I do Melina.
Whats funny in this context about part of my reasoning is that we need to interact/talk/kneel to her in order to level whereas Melina only holds your hand when you level if she's already shown up. What makes this funny is that if they don't appear to npcs then from their perspective we're just kneeling in the middle of Majula and then getting stronger. Unfortunately Melina never interacts with us anywhere other people are.
I think the hags make mention of a firekeeper that they dont know where she is anymore. So the only two references to her say she was sequestered away and then no one knows where she is anymore despite being just down the road. Also I think the blade of calling suggests that Melina, like Shanalotte, had been locked away.
