Nightstand infested with termites.

  • One day I discovered that my nightstand was infested with termites. I got my house fumigated a few months after this video shot. I have another video (unpublished) showing the termites coming through the floor where the leg of the nightstand was planted. After moving the nightstand outside you could see a small hole on the floor where the leg of the nightstand indented the carpet. The floorboards beneath the nightstand creak loudly. I'm sure they chomped up the floor quite a lot before getting to my nightstand. I never mention or show in the video that this is occurred on the second story of the house. Crazy.

    I know the feeling. Just found this kind of frass inside a dresser and evidence of subterranean termites. So that means 2 different species of termites we are going to be dealing with. Also, your neighbor most likely has them too since it’s a duplex so you guys can at least split the cost of a tent fumigation.

    • @silvermica
      @silvermica  Před 3 lety +5

      The other owner and I split the fumigation cost. Although, it took some convincing - initially, they didn't believe there was a termite problem. Even after seeing this video. Instead choosing to believe that the nightstand was infested. This was not true since I bought the nightstand new and you could also see that the termites came through the floor and then into the nightstand. Good times!

    I’ve been seeing that for years but only around one dresser that looked identical to yours. It wasn’t until I started seeing them in the room that I took action. Just broke it down and tossed it but I’m hoping I don’t have to fumigate the house. It seems they really liked that wood specifically.

      @silvermica  Před 3 lety +3

      Egad. That'll probably work. But, all the bugs are still inside though. As for my nightstand, I took my nightstand outside and sprayed it down with some type of termite spray that I had bought from the hardware store. I left the nightstand outside for a few days before cleaning it up and bringing it back inside. After that I had the house tented and fumigated. The thing I understand about termites is that they always comeback and all you can really do is fumigate every so many years.

    If it's drywood termites, get couple of electric heaters and overheat the room to at least 120 deg F (of course close the door to keep hot air in the room) for few hours. Do this when it's very hot outside (100 deg F?). If you can overheat the queen (embedded in some piece of lumber) and she dies, then that should take care of the drywood termite colony. Of course this would not work on subterranean termite colony as the bulk of colony is located underground.

Of course, that was total nonsense - besides I bought the nightstand brand new from Restoration Hardware two decades earlier. And, just a smidgeon of internet research would reveal just how common termites are and that tenting your house every few years isn't really that unusual. I believe they're called dry termites. I fumigated (tented) the house to get rid of them.

      @oneundecided Před 3 lety

      @@silvermica There are two reasons in my opinion - there are not many these termites in Canada due to the colder climate plus California I think is suffering from the lack of drinking water. In addition to that here in Canada, we have free medical coverage.

      @silvermica  Před 3 lety

      @@oneundecided - I'm lucky in that don't need free medical coverage. Water is a problem here in California. I'm from this area - so I don't have much of a reason to move - outside of retirement plans (maybe).
