Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a CZcams video every Tuesday & Friday plus an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 5:30pm GMT/BST on Twitch.

Wow, how timely, I just moved to Scotland YESTERDAY!🙀
Comrie here👋
Welcome to Scotland Oxana
@@alistairpolland4295 thank you! Love it here ❤
Winters on its way wrap up warmly
If I didn't think much about it, I probably would've assumed the national drink of Scotland was Irn Bru 😂
😂
That's exactly what I was thinking !
Being Scottish I would agree, a lot more of it is definitely drunk here than whisky, and other countries make whisky, nobody else in the world makes irn-bru.
@@daveaglasgow Aye, right enuff.
I enjoyed this video immentsly..not going to say its your best(you've had so many) but its definitely up there at the top...cheers, dear!
Professor Alanna is working hard today! 😀
😂 🥃
Professor Alanna sponsored by a Whiskey company.
as a Scot, cracking vid. another lesser known fact ... Haggis are vicious wee animals, on a par with Australia's drop bears.
I’ve seen them, but yeh look cute but vicious if cornered
Irn Bru is so popular as it is a well known hangover cure, every student flat in Scotland will have a 2 litre bottle somewhere for the morning after
You are only partially correct with the daylight observations. There are fewer daylight hours in Scotland during the winter but far more in the summer. With there being only an hour or two of night around the longest day in the central belt of Scotland (and so probably less further north but I have only lived as far north as Oban, so could say how long night lasts further north of that), which is very different on the south coast of England where it is more like six or seven. There are also plenty of chances for sunburn in Northern England and Scotland, the risk largely coming from the false sense of security gained by the slightly lower temperatures.
Not sure you’d do that well running between Westray and Papa Westray, you know, seeing as how they are two separate islands.
You might get a kick out of looking into things that were invented/discovered either in Scotland or by a Scot. The list is quite long.
Try making a deep-fried Mars Bar, or a Clootie Dumpling!! Or do a taste test of Tunnock's Teacakes - not in comparison to anything else, but just on their own, as they are the best thing ever!!
Perfect timing on this one - I just found out through Facebook that a friend is currently touring Scotland, and I literally learned for the first time about the national animal being the unicorn about 12 hours before watching this. Also, my friend’s photos are beautiful- it seems like Scotland has far more than its share of stunning scenery.
If you play ‘spot the ginger’ in England you can go ten mins without seeing one but in Edinburgh they are never out of sight 😂. I have two copies of the ginger gene (2 copies gives a much much higher manifestation of ginger) I have the freckles and fair skin with a red ginger to my ordinarily brown hair if I’m out in the sun for long periods. Also men in Scotland always have fingers patches in their beards because of the Celtic and Nordic connection.
Images to Google if you like Scottish scenery 1/ Luskentyre beach 2/ Quiraing Skye 3/ Stac Pollaidh 4/ Glen Coe 5/Torridon 6/ Glen Affric.
Just some of my favourite places.
This was awesome, thanks! 🏴
The thing with describing what Irn Bru tastes like is the same as explaining what Coke tastes like to someone who has never had it. Irn Bru tastes like Irn Bru, just like Coke tastes like Coke and nothing else.
As a Highlander, I think that Irn Bru has a slightly metallic taste to it. Allana should try the 1901 version, which uses the original recipe (or as close as they can get it), it tastes much better than the modern one which has artificial sweeteners in it.
Hiya. Wow! There are Single Measures, Double Measures and then there are Alanna Measures! Stay safe. All the best to you.
😂 thank you!
That was a very generous 'Home measure' young lady!
Funnily enough I had just finished a can of Ibn Bru 15 mins before you vid came out and I still can't describe what it tastes of.... Love Scotland, especially the seafood on the west coast.
As an Englishman living in Scotland, every day is a learning experience.
@@paulguise698 Naaa it's fine. There are one or two zealots, but they are mostly lovely towards me.
@@paulguise698 of course we don't hate English people!
Maybe it’s just a front!
This was interesting! Your research videos are always fun! I got really sick this week and have a bad sore throat lol, thanks for the chill video! Hope you have a nice weekend!
Ahh no! That's pretty common first week of uni, loads of new people around! Hope you get better soon
Loving your videos! I’m in the process of arranging to move over to Scotland by next fall, I’ve been over three times and am absolutely in love! Love learning about other peoples experiences in Scotland ❤️
The first thing you have to learn is ‘autumn’ not ‘fall’ 🙄😂
When my parents were alive, their only regret about moving to Scotland was not moving sooner
Hey Alanna, I've also got into whisky the past few years after I was given a high peat (iodine) version and hated it and then decided that it really was time to go on a voyage of discovery.
If it helps anyone else, the Western Isles historically produce high peat variants and Speyside produces low peat variants.
Great video 'ya Daft lassie'!!!!
A golfing pal of mine, a Scot whose dad worked in the Ballantine's distillery says if he's not drinking a single malt he will use Irn-Bru as a mixer.
That whisky bottle looked pretty cool too! Thanks for a fun and informative video gurl 😀 Cheers Alanna 🥃👌
I've watched several excellent documentaries on Barra Airport. Security has to regularly patrol the beach to pick-up litter and other objects on the beach to prevent damage to planes during landing and takeoffs...✈🏴
Wow that's incredible!
Great video as always Alanna. 🙂
You need a hard R for giRders, like a Glaswegian would say. They used is as part of the radio and TV advertising. Think it was like..."Made in Scotland fRom giRders."
The Westray - Papa Westray flight is actually part of a loop of flights round several Orkney islands and to/from the Orkney capital Kirkwall. Orkney is fascinating and beautiful - you should go there!
This video is so dope! I am so happy I clicked on it.
You're videos never fail to cheer me up so thank you,,,, Have you ever been to Scotland? The Highlands are Jaw Droppingly beautiful, it blew my mind when I first went
Love the video!
Yay, Friday Video time. The whole Ginger/ Redhead thing in Scotland is mainly attributed to the Celtic connection along with Ireland, Wales, France and also Cornwall. A little fact learnt being a bit of a Ginge myself. I always thought Irn Bru was the national drink of Scotland but Cù Bòcan whisky is a fine candidate for that title. I looked like you were enjoying the odd sip during the video. Time for another best whisky taste test I think. 😊Happy weekend Alanna.
Thanks so much!
The cornish also have a high percentage of Iberian DNA as the trading and fishing connection to what is now Portugal goes back to pre Roman times. Cornwall was and still is an isolated part of Britain. Even now few road or rail connections.
I found out while watching one of your previous vids that I struggle with Scottish place names. Perhaps it’ll help me if I practice while discovering a new whisky. Great, informative, vid. Cheers, Alanna! 🥃
Ecclefechan
Kilconquhar
Strathaven
Milngavie
Culross
if you can get those 5, you're golden
Remarkable Alanna, you get every Scottish pronounciation but one spot on and then trip up over everyday English words. Very funny and some very good facts too 😃
Canadians have a lot of Scottish ancestry and Gaelic is spoken in areas of Canada so lots of Scottish culture stuck. You can hear it in the way they speak ‘aboot’ for instance. Ditto on America their version of England is closer to Scottish/ Ulster-scot English than RP.
cheers alanna , great video
I loved my time in Edinburgh, and I even can imagine myself living there.
Barra is pronounced with a short A. Traigh Mhòr is pronounced ‘try vor’ (means big beach in Gaelic) 😊
More is big and big is little in Gaelic
It's also where they filmed Whisky Galore.
Thanks Alanna, I learnt a ton of new things from today’s video ! 👨🎓Scotland’s Unicorns, you being a drinking whiskey drinker, there are a tons of redheads in the world - nothing wrong with that, Scots drinking IronBru - who knew and Canada’s Beaver - we’ll skip over that one eh 😂
Knew most of these but had never heard about the shortest commeriial flight. Just back from a week in Stirling, my brother now lives there. Wonderful time other than yesterdays nightmare train journey back - 12 hours it took to get home to SE Kent!! However was worth it and you need to visit
That was a fun video! Your pronounciation was consistent throughout!
(Sent from 🏴)
My brother has red hair - Irish/English ancestry. The Barra airport, wow, very cool!!! The Cù Bòcan bottle is very nicely designed.
Hi Alanna
I'm surprised you didn't mention the 2nd most known, after " Nessie ", animal; the Haggis. This adorable creature lives in the Highlands. Two of it's legs are short to prevent it rolling down the mountains. It's shy, and very difficult to see in the wild for obvious reasons. 😎
Great video, as always 🎖 I Will be trying " cu bocan" soon 🇬🇧🇨🇦💜
Do haggises lay scotch eggs?
@@hadz8671 No. And scotch eggs aren't Scottish, they were invented in England.
I can't believe I am watching this; hilarious. I was hoping that by the end of the video the glass would be MT.🤣
Look up the Border Riding Festivals. Especially Selkirk in June and Langholm (my hometown) on the last Friday of July.
Your discussion on redheads brought back a nice memory for me. when I was stationed in Belfast in 1970 I met a redhead from the south of the country who absolutely gorgeous and had a very soft Irish brogue alas nothing came of it. but a nice memory to have.
Definitely start all your videos with the whisky promo and astoundingly generous continuously assessed taste test. Then do another halfway through.
I've always been a sucker for a red head lol. I tend to be rum over whisky, but there are definitely a few whiskies that I like!
I flew to Barra once as a kid in a tiny plane and landed on the beach, it was well cool!
for me i like the Irn-Bru and also their tv adverts always made me chuckle
Irn Bru with a very dry cider superb.
There are certain areas of Scotland, where Whisky and Irn Bru take a second place as national drink, to Buckfast Tonic Wine (which incidentally is made in Devon, England!)
I had that wine when I visited Buckfast Abbey, along with many of their other drinks on offer.
Yes the combination of caffeine and alcohol in Buckie fuels a lot of violence in Glasgow especially. Or it goes well with deep fried mars bars.
The Bucky triangle
Alanna, I will say you have a great taste in Whiskey, as I love "Cu Bocan" for reference that was a mythical Hound from Hell who would threaten the Village locals. Some of the Worlds leading inventions are Scottish and I am English. Keep up the great work!!😀😀
Whiskey isn’t Scottish but whisky is.
I knew them all! Having a Scottish mother helps.... I like Irn Bru (tastes sort of like orange, but with a kick), but I like Tizer better. They used to sell Irn Bru at the big store in Whitehorse, Yukon, but I haven't seen it for some years now. :(
Scotland 🏴! 😊
Another cool fact that there is a village called Dull in Scotland, and it is twinned with a place called Boring in the USA... and Bland in Australia.
Och aye, the noo noo noo noo noo noo noo noo.... an' that's the end o'the noos!
I went on honeymoon to Scotland and have visited on various other occasions, so it's familiar enough to me and so are all these details. The Signature whisky is noo... er, I mean new to me, however! Great to almost have another one of *those* videos. I hope we get to see you visiting Scotland in a future vlog, Alanna!
PS You're on thin ice talking about Irn Bru as a "soft drink." It's a wee drop o' the hard stuff - to me, the flavour suggests nothing other than drinkable paint stripper!
An excellent video as usual Alanna, I went to Scotland in 2016 and went to a tasting venue, funny I don’t drink Alcohol but they had Ironbrew and didn’t like it either. But I went because I’m only interested in History and it was fascinating, here is something you will find interesting, if you go to a distillery in Scotland you cannot take pictures from a digital camera as there is risk of fire (I think) I’m not sure why but cameras were banned at the distillery I went to. I loved it there nonetheless.
Cheers
Thanks for sharing this. Now when I talk to my friend on the internet from Scotland I'll know some facts.✌️👍🤓
FINALLY sponsored by a whiskey company! After all these years! Cheers 🍻
So exciting!!
Whisky, no E in Scotch Whisky
Easy to remember if it has an E (for Eire) then it is Whiskey, otherwise it is whisky.
In adverts they used to say Irn Bru was made from girders, but I think the Trading Standards put a stop to that.
Alternative Universe Alanna is a red head, who's moved to Canada from Scotland, & Youtubing her Adventures (& Naps) there...
Irn Bru taste = 'Odd'!
Thanks Alanna! 🙏🙏
Hi Alanna. Great vid as usual. If you're getting into whiskey, may I suggest you treat yourself to some proper whiskey glasses. They're shaped to give the best taste experience and in my opinion, well worth buying and using.
Cheers 🥃🥃
Scotland would be cool to visit
Irn brew was quite popular when I was growing up in the industrial area of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. It was produced by a local soft drink company and went off of the market when that company closed. It could not compete with the big soda pop companies. Years later it was reintroduced, again by a local company but it was not quite the same and the company did not last long.
My work took me to Aberdeen, Scotland many years later where, to my delight, I found irn brew in virtually every store.
Irn brew has a unique flavour which is why trying to describe it in terms of other flavours is fruitless.
Back here in Nova Scotia we can get it brew that is imported from Scotland.
I love trying different single malts, the older and rarer the better. Sadly Irn Bru won't get a look-in these days!!
i did the outer Hebrides on my bicycle 5 years ago and went to Barra airport / beach before catching the ferry to Harris , i'd love to do the flight though .
Irn-Bru is famously, a popular hangover cure in Scotland. Perhaps you were drinking it at the wrong time, Alanna! 😉
Just an FYI if you're ever in the Outer Hebrides - Traigh Mhor (pronounced 'try vohr') means "Big Beach".
Irn Bru is definitely the unholy offspring of tutti frutti, bubblegum and cream soda with the latent gene of Fanta orange expressed in its tone!
I imagine a heathen orgy of fizzy juices in a ring of standing stones - bottle caps randomly strewn about and careless mixing of their 'fluids'!!! The result got Pictish blue war paint on its label and voila!- Irn Bru became clan chieftain of Scotland!
46% ! Strong whiskey. The first of your sponsor sections I didn't skip. Did you know cheers in Scotland is interchangeable with the old Gaelic word: slangavar (slanj for short). What's wrong with Maple Syrup farms? I went to a very nice village called Niagara on the Lake which has a good one. Nice vid!
alanah how you say the word 'Girder/s' in relation to Iron Brew is perfectly good. How some that has experience of a word says that word will be different to someone that has never come across that word
Nice looking whisky and certainly no short measures from you Alanna.😂
The runway at Barra is actually 3 runways in a triangular pattern. They have 3, well, because they have the room! The use whatever runway is closest to the incoming wind as pilots always prefer to take-off and land into the wind for the extra lift it gives.. There's some pretty cool YT vids them taking of on particularly stormy days. Still to do the flight myself. One day...
Allana, you should try the 1901 version of IRN BRU, which uses the original recipe (or as close as they can get it), it tastes much better than the modern one which has artificial sweeteners in it.
scottish or not iron bru is one of my favourite drinks ill always pick up a big bottle every so often
Try Irn Bru with a fish supper, best way to enjoy it.
Fun Video! Any chance of a whiskey tasting video in future?
Look up the different scientists and inventors that Scotland produced, particularly from the late Georgian to Victorian period. People like Hutton (Geology), Kelvin (pressure/heat), Maxwell (electromagnetism), Adam Smith (economics), James Watt (steam engine), Alexander Fleming (penicillin/antibiotics) , James Dewar (chemistry), James Young (Chemistry), Thomas Young (chemistry) and so on.
That will keep you going for several videos.
Cù Bòcan is a nice whiskey. One of my favourite 🏴🏴🇬🇧🇨🇦🥃.
That’s awesome! I was surprised how much I liked it lol
@@AdventuresAndNaps
Lovely at room temperature with two ice cubes. I don’t use more than two because the meltwater will dilute the whiskey too much. Little small sips from the surface of the whiskey and it’s lovely. Cheers 🥃🥃🏴🏴🇬🇧🇨🇦.
I love watching Akabba getting drunk.
Perfect Edinburgh pronunciation . Kudos
The Tràigh Mhòr, in English 'Big Beach',
Iron bru tastes like bubblegum.
But something I found in Quora, The British did not invade Scotland as the British are Scottish as well as English. Britian is all 4 states combined
Why would anyone think that the 'British' invaded Scotland?
Many have tried but none fully succeeded. Then the Scottish king (James VI) took over England and so Scotland won the nation.
You find great whisky like Laphroig!!!
Very interesting video Alanna. I'm a quarter Scottish. I'm not a redhead but i definitely have the gene because my beard has a definite ginger tinge lol.
Went through a phase of trying different whiskey's to try to man up but hate the strongly peaty ones. Ended up with Black bush Irish and single malt whisky Bushmills as being tolerable. Belgian beer for me.
Just sitting here thinking about how I would describe Irn Bru and a sudden Aberdonian Grandma appears. Hello from Aberdeen. I'm nae too bad the day, thanks. Popping oot to Tescos later, hopefully, it stays clear and disnae go all dreich on me. Enjoyed your video, enjoy your day down South. I would end with an X but it's a bit odd on a YT comment :D
Hello and love from Aberdeen ❤😂
Maybe replace the beaver with the Canadian Lynx - looks cute but is really ferocious. British Kings guards wear Canadian black bears as their caps.
It’s easy to explain what Irn Bru tastes like Irn Bru
You’ve made (inadvertently) one of the biggest arguments for the UK.
The fact you can travel across all the 4 nations but still feel at home is not something that shouldn’t be ignored.
I love the fact I can go to Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff etc and still feel at home and welcome.
Great vid as usual.
I'm not from the UK but isn't the UK and Ireland part of a free travel union or something where you may freely travel between the countries without a passport? I believe that this travel agreement is older than the union of Scotland and the UK and would most likely remain in place even if Scotland leaves the UK. Meaning that you could still travel freely to and from Scotland, but you might need a visa to work there permanently.
Think about it. The 'Irish' Rovers sang a song about the national animal of Scotland.
while they were living in BC?
Possibly
Barr does a Cream Soda which comes in a pink can, it's bacically Irn Bru in a party frock.
My mother's maiden name was Redhead and yes, she did have red hair as did my elder brother. My hair is brown but my beard is red!
Great video btw.
Irn Bru tastes like Girders because steel workers drank it. Classic. Love the wit.
You went to a maple tree farm 😂😂😂 The Canadian equivalent of going to the box factory like on the Simpsons! 😂
Always cute and Funny....... :-)) xxxx
❤❤❤
Great video Alana. I love whisky, especially a decent single malt. Some of the blended whiskies are pretty disgusting though.
Irn bru is excellent for the hangover and can be taken in vodka known as a nip o girders and can also go in whisky
What type of site was at Papa Westray again?! It is a tricky one. Videos are all the better when the bloopers are left in.👍
if you want to get into whisky a good start is glenmorangie a very easy going malt
Funny Video and good
🙏🏻
The irony of Irn-Bru is that it was originally called Iron Brew but they had to change it because it didn't have (much) iron in it. These days, cheap copies are called Iron Brew because Irn-Bru is copyrighted.
Hey Alanna. Irn Bru tastes like Irn Bru to me, nothing else. It has it's own unique taste and I love it but it's definitely not for everyone.
The "tastes like girders" bit was used in a long running ad campaign for the drink, which might help explain why so many picked that.
"Made from girders", rather :-)
@@robertwatford7425 You are correct. It's been awhile since I saw that advert.
"Made in Scotland from girders".
