The Crusher / Troi leotard work out scene is the most underrated of the iconic TNG scenes. :)
Director: I need a scene with all the women of the main cast in leotards.
Writer: Well, first of all, there's only two women in the main cast, and second that doesn't really seem to fit into the plot of the episode and doesn't seem to provide any benefit to the story.
Director: I don't think you understand. I _need_ a scene with all the women of the main cast in leotards.
Writer: Well, there's the scene where the two women are talking while doing work related to their jobs on the ship, I guess we could have them doing stretches in leotards instead.
Director: Nice. Let's put them in front of a mirror so we can see both their front _and_ back at the same time. No, scratch that, we'll place them _between_ two mirrors!
Writer: Uh, sure...
DP: Between mirrors? Sigh.
@@StarkRG Haha. "Now, just to shake it up, let's do the exact same scene, but with Geordi and Worf."
@@ScotchBeard78 Well, since it was ALL the female cast members, obviously it would have to be ALL the male cast members. So, yes, Geordi and Warf, but also Data, Riker, Picard, Wesley (but legal-aged Wesley, not early seasons Wesley), and O'Brien, too, he's not quite a regular cast member, but he's a recurring one and, I think, deserves to be recognized as an honorary regular cast member.
The revised final draft script includes several scenes that were not in the final episode, including a short session Troi has with O'Brien that deals with his girlfriend Mitzi, Wesley telling the Counselor about troubles he had with his mother because she wouldn't let him stay overnight at a party on the holodeck, and more background about the Chrysalians.
"I GET BOTH OF THEM?!?!" Katrina 2020
That scene was pretty exceptional: It’s not often in this show that you have two characters casually talking about their present or past relationship in such a positive manner; usually, it’s more to discuss old wounds, conflicts or grievances. Plus, the lesser used setting of an excessive room, rather than ten forward or the holodeck, is a welcomed change (... Ok, yeah: And those tights too. lol!!)
@@daniellanctot6548 It always felt a bit out of place to me. Pretty much every other time we see people exercising, it seems to be on the holodeck.
Well, I guess this could also be a holodeck (albeit one we don't see often), but what a boring program to run.
[SPOILER ALERT FOR KATRINA - I’m not sure everything I mention below has come to pass yet, so let’s be safe]
@@ZipplyZane - Well that is why I mentioned tha it was one of the lesser used spaces. But we did see gyms like that when Worf gives Klingon Tai Chi lessons and other occasions (I think someone does weight lifting in one episode in the same small room) and there are the larger gyms wher Riker and his dad in Anbo-jyutsu or that Picard fences, etc. But I guess this is the first time the show used this locale, so I do understand that it might raise some eyebrows.
@@daniellanctot6548 Pretty sure at least some of those were on the Holodeck. I know fencing was normally done on the Holodeck.
Katrina crushing on Troi just like all us guys did in our formative years. Credit to this episode, it has one of the best Riker smackdowns.
Speak for yourself. I was all about Beverley. The Captain would agree!
@@austenbin4068 damn it: You beat me to it! Doctor Beverly indeed ruled them all (Except perhaps for Doctor Selar, but since she was only seen in one episode...)
@@austenbin4068 Same. Which was weird because I also identified with Wesley. I would have dreams I was either actually Wesley or I was best friends with him. That made crushing on his mom a bit awkward.
The Riker smackdown is really what I remembered about this episode. I could not have told you which episode had the Troy/Beverly workout until I saw it here.
I can not wait for season 5 when a certain ensign appears.
Shout-out to all the good people at the Gallifrey Gals Legal Department, Unblocking Division!
Bixarely this episode is the pre-cursor to Deep Space 9, and Voyager, and establishes the quadrant system, and establishes the speed of warp speed. For such a random episode it was extremely important to canon.
And the value of stable wormholes!
That "great view" got a plate of food dropped into my dads lap.
This episode establishes the quadrant-based division of the Milky Way Galaxy (with warp-speed conversions being established in Q Who).
The Galaxy is divided into four quadrants (think, chopping a pizza into four pieces): with the quadrants named Alpha, Beta, Gamma & Delta.
The line which divides the Alpha and Beta Quadrants goes from the centre of the Galactic core, thru Earth's Sun (located about 30000 light years away from the centre) to the edge of the Galaxy (50000 light years away from the center).
Thus most of the Federation is located in the Alpha Quadrant.
Although it'll take 50-100 years to reach the Gamma & Delta Quadrants, they will get explored in more detail in the spinoffs.
"I get both of them?!" The Netflix screenshot didn't spoil everything.
So what I really like about this episode is when he tries to mess with Riker playing on his insecurites, and Riker just shuts him down. What he says back is just so devastating. "You're not a bad sort Ral, except you don't have any values." "Deanna is just the woman to give some meaning to your miserable existence, if you're smart enough to take it. I sincerely doubt you are."
Ral is such a stereotypical 80s businessman. Even his outfit is a wallstreet business suit.
STABLE WORMHOLE? That is a big deal.
There are quite a few unrevisited big deals in Star Trek.
"And I'm Devonani Ral..."
If you know, you know
Great reactions! Well, I wonder what happened to those pesky Ferengi left behind in the Delta Quadrant? I guess we'll never know. 😉🤣
"Man have hair, too!"
Picard: Merde!
As someone with a foot phobia, that scene is torture for me. I have to close my eyes whenever its on. I then open them thinking it must be over by now, but noooo...it's still going.😭
I've always thought that guy is such a massive creep.
He is just awful.
Counsellor Troi has more changes of clothes in this episode alone than she has worn in the entire two previous seasons combined !!!
Troi has some fantastic episodes down the line NO spoilers obviously.
Matt McCoy always reminds me of police academy 5 and 6 haha
Ooh, Paula mentioned Mal from Firefly. Does that mean she's seen it? If Katrina has not that would make a great future series on the channel. I still wholeheartedly suggest you two eventually react to Farscape, an incredible Australian sci fi show from 20 years ago. I am a die hard Next Generation fan, but Farscape instantly became my favourite sci fi television series of all time.
Farscape, Babalyon 5 and Stargate. There’s some great 90s TV that still holds up well today. Babylon 5 in seasons 3 and 4 reaches heights I have not seen matched even by the expanse today, and has even been re-released on HBO recently.
A few years later Battlestar Galattica was also one of the greats. It really shows how much the new treks have to improve, as I’ve been really disappointed so far. Anyway, I’m up for Farscape being reacted to. Holy Frell yes!
@@makasete30 I don't personally have an interest Babylon 5 or Battlestar Galactica, but I hope to someday get around to watching Stargate, mostly for the eventual arrival of Ben Browder and Claudia black. I really love their acting. They both bring so much power to their roles and they really handle emotion well.
Obviously,do not want to spoil anything but also do not want Katrina to get her hopes up too high when it comes to Troi.
Believe it was Marina Sirtis who said something to the effect that even though the show was set in the future,it was 20th century - and mostly - male writers on the show. Which is why,Marina felt,Troi was basically "eye candy" for a lot of it.
Best Troi episodes are "Disaster" and "Thine Own Self" imo
The braids work.
Turns out, the future looks just like the late 80's.
been a few months since I've seen one of your vids... audio clarity is a lot better. keep it up gallifrey gals!
Fun fact, there is a follow up episode about what happens to the Ferengi craft at the end in Star Trek Voyager series.
Paula needs to wear her hair like Pippi Longstocking.
Ral reminds me a lot of Khan from the ST:TOS episode "Space Seed", but in a less OTT way. For example, he is blatantly domineering and gaslighting Troi, looking for the same sort of abusive control that Khan did over McGivers, and Troi should have caught onto Ral's games a lot sooner. At least she was somewhat stronger than McGivers, and didn't give up her life to be Ral's abuse victim.
For a show that often writes gender really weirdly, Riker is always demonstrating good ex behavior.
Not always - sometimes he's a little pouty and petty - but hey, that's understandable and humanizes him - he always comes through respecting Deanna's choices and appreciating her.
@@DumblyDorr Pouty is acceptable lol, there's a difference between annoying yet acceptable vs a _Problem_ and they're surprisingly not that bad for the time it was written. Honestly there are modern shows that get relationships waaaaay more terribly wrong than Star Trek.
Star Trek just writes relationships badly in general, but not like, problematically bad usually. It's the old joke that Star Trek straight baits as much as it queer baits lol _Equality!_ If 2 characters have good chemistry, it's not going to happen, or if it does happen, its not how you want it to happen lol.
Those poor Ferengi, never to see their family, friends or Latinum again
Uhh...not really
The Crusher & Troi scene and you're both fine with it...DAMN! I have no more words lol.
That’s the thing I don’t get: the dialogue in that scene is horrible, and its just an excuse to show off their butts on tv. I can understand why the actresses went along with it if it meant a steady paycheck, but seriously, leave the shirtless cowboy romance novel writing out of my sci-fi.
If women actually like that sort of thing, I’ll refer to the Women Sensitivity in the Workplace video from “Family Guy”.
@@chrisbullard5901 personally I think you are overreacting, though I agree about the unnecessary camera views. Though we had Riker flexing his pecs on a few episodes, this episode has the guy topless.
It’s just two woman chatting as they work out, which happens, and allows Troi to reveal how deeply Troi is falling for the jerk. Fun facts, they have their work out gear on back to front, supposedly to show a futuristic outfit. Also the room is actually the starship corridor with a mirror placed in it.
Oh And Family guy early seasons are excellent.
80 years thatta way!
That was the guy from 'Police Academy 6' who use to smile whenever he got offended... & then plot his revenge. One of the most annoying
I'm pretty sure I've never understood a lot of things about what men women find attractive (perhaps I've never understood anything at all about it), but even as a teen, I just didn't get Troi's attraction to Ral since everything about him screamed sketchy sleazeball, and I always thought it was glaringly obvious. I know as well as anyone you can't help who you fall for (whether it's love or just lust/attraction) and everyone is free to be attracted to who they are and not to who they aren't, but was Troi attracted completely NOT seeing he was a sleaze? Or did she see it but was still attracted anyway?
(I did watch the actor, Matt McCoy, in a few other films and tv guest appearances he made during this era. He tended to do earnest Jimmy Stewart roles or similar obviously sketchy antagonists.)
Serenity now insanity later
From an old SNL skit ft Tom Brady:
The Simple Rules for Attraction:
1. Be handsome.
2. Be attractive.
3. Don't be unattractive.
7:50 somehow that reminded that Quentin Tarantino still wants to direct a Star Trek movie :D
I've always hated the way Ral introduced himself--then heavy music and commercial. I was like "And?.. Am I supposed to know you?!" Of course I knew the actor from the Porky's movies. He's hawking AARP car insurance now.
Everything about how Ral is presented is SO. WEIRD. Like the director and actor had a completely different take on the character than the actual writing + Sirtis haha.
This episode reminds me of Mobile Suit Gundam. The anime is a story of telepaths that pilot giant robots, but they always seem to use their telepathy to “Honeypot” others into doing things for them. Alot like what this male betazoid was doing to Troi, in gundam both the protagonists and antagonists use their powers on non suspecting non telepaths who have no means of defense for their own gain.
Will this stable worm hole come up again.
Interestingly enough, it does. Just not on TNG.
Yeah... Devinoni Ral really thinks he's suave and smart - and to a certain degree, he is - but his arrogance is also pretty off-putting. You can just see how superior he thinks himself.
As a huge DS9 fan I find it difficult to watch the Ferengi on TNG.
Just imagine they're all Cousin Gaila or Brunt.
Something about that actor in EVERYTHING he does is icky creepy disgusting and makes you want to kick him lol. Love watching you guys! So awesome you’re watching them all. Though this episode is always one of the “ignored” though Lol. Ew ew ew ew that dude Lolol. Omg this ep lol.
Oh I can't ignore this one. I'm only skimming the reactions this season but I HAD to stop and check out the take on this one haha. Lloyd Braun! And one of the weirdly most sexual lines in TNG when Bev talks about how a hot guy can make your toes curl :) [which says a lot about how asexual the show generally is]
There are two wolves fighting inside every wlw: one is a feminist, the other likes looking at beautiful women in tight outfits. It is a neverending struggle.
Me. I am wlw.
Relatable 😂
So this is the first, problematic relationship Deanna gets in these early days. For me it's the one major issue I have with this episode. Other than that, the Ferengi at this point are comic relief, but still.....duplicitous
Haha yeah, any pleasure that for once Troi is the one who gets to have a fling is somewhat invalidate by it being with SUPER CREEPY LLOYD BRAUN :)
I love that you guys didn't clutch your preals at the Troi/Crusher scene. Yeah, it's an obvious sex-sells scene, but the way some on CZcams talk, you'd think it was the most sexist thing ever.
I've been a ST:TNG fan since it aired but I wasn't 100% sure when my favorite episode was. Just checked - it's this season and is still to come!!!!!!! Paula, what are the chances it's also your favorite?????
"Lets dress in sequin jumpsuits, work out together and talk about men." Ah, the male writing staff of Star Trek in the 80s and 90s. Somewhat better now, but they had a long way to go.
The episode was written by a woman, Hannah Louise Shearer.
@@philippschmidt80 Yeeah, but these scripts are often reworked heavily in the writer's room, I'm guessing the choice of setting was more on the staff writers and/or producers/directors. And I highly doubt Shearer wrote in the sequins :D
Is Paula's furniture TARDIS blue on purpose.
?
Also, I get bags of Gardetto's that are all rye pieces with garlic.
Watch startrek Voyager to the sequel!
HOW BIG IS THE PRICE
empire jeff I don't know
F.Y.I Who still uses film? Well there are a few directors who do, a notable example being Christopher Nolan
Is that a Mountie hat behind Paula?
Yeah I spotted that too. I am sure that it is.
She commented that she had a bunch of props in that room in an earlier episode. I wanted her to keep that hat.
I cringe at this episode every time. Yikes. I call it the Troi gets oiled up episode.
Noooo! you broke the non-intro in the 1st 3-minutes streak.
Wait is that Rom from ds9?
No. Max Grodenchik plays other Ferengi characters in other episodes ("Captain's Holiday", "The Perfect Mate", "Body Parts") but not this one.
This is the lowest rated IMDb episode of TNG season 3.
Yet it's still not that bad. Which just shows how great season three was overall.
Really? I would have thought Transfigurations would have won that title (The main guest star bores me to death!); I find even Tin Man less interesting than this one.
@@daniellanctot6548 actually I have zero memory of that episode and i know I’ve seen it a few times. I recognize every episode (including Tin Man) for season 3 but I’m staring at the images of Transfigurations and it absolutely doesn’t ring a bell. It got to be pretty forgettable.
It's a bit of a mess.
I rather like this episode. People are overblowing the issues with Ral and too much female anatomy showing.
Ahh troi getting porked episode and the crusher porked by a ghost episode 👋💦
