Most of these people enter through the back when riders are exiting so this policy does little to deter fare evasion . However when you have people making decisions at the top who don’t ride the bus this is what you get.

I feel sorry for the MTA workers because a lot of drivers are risking themselves. If they are so concerned about fair invasion then they should find another method of doing things.

Let’s also factor in that not only do many folks NOT remove their backpacks on city buses (and the subway) but on a crowded bus folks will always bottleneck the front instead of moving to the rear which is more than frustrating.
Before NY officials can fight crime, first they need to make back a third of their revenue, and we all know revenue comes first, not public safety.
I seen swarms of cops in my local station today, just standing around. I would assume revenue is what pays for that new security

Well Metro and some areas in the Washington DC metro area where the drivers were told by their supervisors or superiors do not confront them for not paying their fare due to assault and everything
Shame on you MTA, you've known about this problem for years and you made very little effort to prevent this problem, you now want to put the drivers safety at risk with alot of sick customers and if they can't come through the rear they will not pay when they come through the front door, come on MTA you know that!

If only the MTA was as focused on reducing crime and making the system safer as they are on collecting revenue from fare evaders it would be a much safer place.

I’m a cta operator from Chicago and they come through the back door all the time. We used to have back door fare collectors but no more. If its that serious hire them back but in Chicago there’s no fare dispute, it’s not that serious to lose my life or get injured over a fare🤨

I live in the Bronx where many passengers simply get in from the front and evade fare. The bus drivers don't even bother making it a big deal because some these riders are lunatics. The best solution is to have more plain clothes officers out in the field on the buses. I feel ripped off since I pay $127 per month for the MTA when I could easily do the same for free.

How ironic that they implented this policy today because I was on the Bx39 Bus eariler today the driver opened the back doors at the bus stop when I was getting on when nobody was even getting off at the stop. This policy isn't gonna stop fare evasion and deter crime. Most of the transit crime happens on the subway, not the bus. Your much safer riding the bus to be honest. The drivers don't say anything to people who evade the fare anyways. They get paid regardless so why should they to be honest. Does the mta want them to be bus drivers or debt collectors?
What about the former head of MTA Ludlow( think that is his name ) who Allegedly stole from MTA, and was seen in a sporting EVENT with the elite having a good time, off of MTA, they just replaced him.
how hard is it to pay your fare if you’re low income you can apply for a half fare metro card so you’ll only pay $1.35 instead of 2.75$ !

i agree with you 💯% about the fights. I'm from harlem and on my trip to work today. i witnessed a rider mouth off to the driver because the driver asked for several riders to stop messing with the backdoor. plus during the same trip. Two female riders got into a very heated verbal exchange. I'm not sure if they actually ended up fighting or not because i exited the bus before any of that foolishness can go down lol.

They need to put cops on the bus. I was shocked when I got on a bus in the Bronx. IT had to be at the least 27 people waiting and complaining about how long the bus was taking. When it did come only myself and a elderly man paid our far. But had there been a police officer on the bus this wouldn't have happened. I think it's a shame this is happening. Give them summonses, if they don't pay have them clean the bases, if the do it again put them in jail for 7 days. That will definitely deter violators. Wish you the best. I live over 100 miles from city. Never took train bus or subway yet my pay gets docked .025% to pay MTA for your free rides. Makes sense.

Yesterday, I was riding the Bx12 bus and it was the first time that I showed my proof of payment to the fare inspectors and seeing multiple fare evaders receiving summonses.
Never get on a select bus without paying. Just take the regular bus for free 😂
Be careful of 79st or e16st if ur using b82 select bus. That's where I usually have to duck these people.

People from all walks of life are fare beaters young and elderly
I'm not referring to any race here, but one thing I've noticed is that blacks in particular never want to pay the fare, but not everyone, be it some people or Queens or Manhattan.
I'm a Philly bus operator they evade through the front doors. They just walk right pass. The whole ridership are fare evaders

Today I counted 20 people getting on the front and the rear of the bus I was on.
What about people that need to exit and cant exit through the front.
I can see and agree with not opening the rear door preventing non paying passengers from being able to get seat yet the fare evaders get seats that they didn't pay for.

The operators open both doors to service a bus stop, once that green light above the door is on, the rear doors are unlocked & the customers who are alighting can then push on the doors to open them.
What that new policy is stating is that the operators are prohibited activating the switch that automatically opens all doors..
Most of the newer buses are even so sensitive that you only need to get close enough to trigger the sensor that opens the rear doors

I drive the Bx 1and 2 in the bronx on the grand concourse one are two people pay their fare for the day.

If you're taking the b82 select bus they are checking on east 16th most of the time or on 79st. Watch out for those. I got stopped twice in the last 2 years. Every 365 days I get stopped at least once.
I drove for MABSTOA for 30 years. Worked The Bronx and most Manhattan routes and finished my career on the M42 crosstown route on 42nd St. where there was a sense of civility. Meaning that people more or less did the right thing and the bus operators were less likely to be assaulted. I retired in 2011 when times were still good. New York City has since plunged so deep in social decay and lawlessness that it is no surprise that people not pay the fare. Left New York in January of 2020 and haven’t looked back.
I also, left New York in January of 2020. I felt like a genius when the subway riots occured just two weeks after my having done so. No regrets. Best. Decision. Ever. ✌❤😀✊👊

People should stop doing this because the bus drivers needs pay so that they can stay under a roof and also I think that the MTA should add scanners to the rear door and have an alarm if someone gets in from the rear door
If you want to be hard on fare evasion use a proof of payment system. MTA workers just walk through the bus and check for proof of payment for anyone who has boarded. Also consider making OMNY cards (not debit/credit cards) the only valid proof of payment on all transit in the New York Metropolitan Area. Look at what other cities are doing.
MTA needs to put the team of mta police back in place, to check for fair tickets, like they first had when they started with the new Select Bus Service. Less people were getting on from the back door because they knew they would need to show their receipt when asked, or they would be issued a ticket. Put the officers back at the bus stops.

In Australia they have these people with like a small fare machine reader that checks our Opal card, and They can check to see if you’ve tapped on the bus or not. And if you haven’t tapped on, or don’t have one, Or don’t have anything that shows that you paid your fair they issue you a ticket right there on the spot. I think the fine starts at like $200. I feel like they should just do this here

They are losing enough money to put an under cover cop on each bus to give a summons to every fare jumper. The fines alone would be millions in profit for the city.

Oslo has a problem like this with buses, trams and metros. I can tell by the amount of riders exiting the vehicle at a stop when the ticket inspectors board.
NYC fighting Fare beaters more than big crimes why because it cost them money.
The old Newlook fishbowl buses didn't have this problem. Only alighting passengers could use the exit doors by standing on a sensor to open them, and they always shut neatly behind the departing person, and no-one could enter there. That banning use of the exit doors went on in Dublin Ireland for decades.
By the time you pay your fare through the front door people take up the seats as they come through the back doors and you have to stand
