Measure breathlessness and respiratory function using BOLT
Practice breathing recovery to calm help calm breathing
Slow, light deep breathing to improve gas exchange
Slow breathing to improve alveolar ventilation for increased oxygen uptake in the blood
Breath holds until strong air hunger to influence immune response
The above exercises are beneficial to help with recovery post covid.
Nitric oxide, which is produced in large quantities in the paranasal sinuses and inhaled as a matter of course during nostril breathing, is also currently undergoing clinical trials in China, both as a treatment for Covid-19 patients and a preventative measure for healthcare workers.

I know this is older but I just found this. Lifetime asthmatic here (45 years old, first attack at just weeks old) and I learned more watching this video than I have from any doctor I have seen. THANK YOU!!!!
I've also had lifelong breathing issues and buying his book The Oxygen advantage is one of the best things I ever did
Nj
awesome. try magnesium supplements too. usually too much calcium (found in cheese or milk products is not good). lastly, more water 8 cups on average daily.
Thanks be to God I found you and this LIFE CHANGING video! I am
Recovering from Covid 19 and had
Pneumonia at the end of it. I have sat during the course of this video outdoors and did the breathing exercises along with you Doctor. Already I feel better! I am a believer and will follow this breathing exercises. Thank you!!!!!!
As a Nurse and someone with Asthma, I immediately feel better breathing as you explained and I’m noticing patients wearing masks for prolonged times have a habit of shallow mouth breathing.. some are developing Caridomyopathy .. it’s all about the breath
If you cannot breath well you will be too afraid to live well … take off the masks 😷 friends , breathe and share only positive thoughts and ACTIONS❤🙏THE TIME IS NOW .. it will never be tomorrow
I started this a few days ago. I have asthma and just recovered from covid. My Breathlessness was scary and had no energy for anything. My medication would not work. After only a couple of days I am so so much better thanks to these breathing exercises. Anyone considering this, do it. You will not regret it.
So good to hear this. I have asthma and recovering from covid and so very short of breathe. Did you continue to get better with the breathlessness after a couple of days of these exercises? It is so scary
@@TheLisajoyce yes I did. I physically wrote out a list of a few breathing exercises and tried to do them throughout the day (3 times was probably the most I managed). Be patient and stick with it. When your well enough you can begin to challenge yourself more with short walks or small swim, whatever works for you. Definitely stay with your medication too. I think the combination of medicine and exercises complimented each other. Best of luck with it and just take it day by day. There is light at the end of the tunnel
Excellent to hear this. Traditionally I am a mouth breather, I have since had a septoplasty to correct a deviated septum. My nose airflow is greatly improved. However I still continue to mouth breath at night, it's almost the habit is so deeply ingrained. I will order the mouth tapes. What is your experience?
Thanks
Thank you so much for sharing it helps me with my asthma..
Thank You! I am in the hospital with covid pneumonia, after doing your exercises for a brief period I feel and look better.

Hi, thanks for caring.
I am doing pretty good, feel close to fully recovered. I have had some weird sensations along the way.
@@claessorensson225 How are you feeling now? My friend had pneumonia less than 8 months ago - tested negative many times for covid19. She didn't go to Hospital for that but recovered at home. Right after the beginning of the year she got a terrible cold, she felt like she wanted to die she was so sick, turns put she had covid19 this time and pneumonia again. She was at the hospital for about three weeks and now she's in rehab and she still using oxygen. I hope she'll be okay her health is not the best.
Claes, I hope you have fully recovered from Covid. It is a nasty and pernicious disease.
Just read ur reply that you have recovered. Wonderful! 👍
I had covid, when the fever hit I did wim hof breathing, I could only do rounds of 10 with15 sec holds, the fever was gone in 5 minutes, only had to do this a couple of times.
I also found that this breathing alleviated the cough, I think it opened the lung tubes that were contracting, felt like crap but I was back to work feeling fine by the end of my 10 day isolation.
All in all it didn't feel as bad as the flus I usually get every year which have been quite severe all my life, I must be sensitive to flu, I'm strong and healthy don't drink or smoke and eat healthy, I'm 55 now.
Thats great ! Dud you get vaccanated ? I take 5000 units vit d zinc 30 mg. Coq10 100 mg. I make one green smoothie spinash and blueberries every morning. Thats my breakfast till noon. A lot of spinash and half cup of blueberries and enough water to make it a drink. Good luck.
I forgot to add i do wim hoff every night before bed. Works !

Praise the Lord Jesus,it works, I was out of breath due to anxiety and cold weather,it really helped, thank you so much.
I cured myself of asthma 5 years ago. Buteyko works. I mostly just used (and continue to use) a simple exercise of 10 5-second breath holds, with 10-15 seconds of normal breathing. So simple. All medications stopped 5 years ago. I have 6 cats and had immunotherapy (allergy shots) for 5 years without establishing immunity. Buteyko provided me with not just an improvement, but a complete cure. I threw out my epipen (long expired) a few months ago! I’m adding the following: breath holds are always at the end of a normal exhalation. Always nose breathe! If you need to do the various nose unblocking methods that Patrick and others indicate.
Is it really as simple as you stated?
Afcourse it all works !!!
I am so happy for you and also proud of you! Stay well and live long healthy and happy.
@Kathleen Adams Do you have other channels that you recommend also? Did you learn it from this channel? It seems great to me, almost too good to be true
Do you do 10 5 second breath holds once a day?
I may Have COVID, it’s been a good few days now. Better in the daytime, worse at night. Nights are really hard. Feels awful. These breathing exorcises actually help restore breathing patterns and have helped me stay calm. I get much better oxygen feelings with this than trying to force air into my lungs. It actually has I,proved the tightness in my chest as well and I feel like this has been crucial to me getting better. Thank you so much. This is truly awful but luckily the respiratory stuff is the only symptom I have left. Everything else has improved. Good to know that there are people who really care in these hard times out there. Praise the Lord for all he has done to teach us and help is to Live through this. Thank you for your help. Stay well. God bless you!

I agree. The nights are worse for some reason. Might be a bit anxiety as well.
Thanks
Hi Chance. Glad that this video is helping you. Many thanks

Thanks a lot man, I have learnt more from you than I ever did from all my doctors put together.
Thanks for the comment @raghavmehta4753.
Hope you're healthy and well.
This advice completely changed my wife’s sleep. She sleeps silently and much deeper. We practice it all day now even while cycling.
Thank you so much!
Been suffering from COVID for a month now. I'm speaking from India. I shook hands with an American visiting here. From the next hour onward, my asthma aggrevated. It increased to the extent I started having attacks by day12. Had to rush in emergency to the hospital to pull off my attacks. I'm having diarrhoea, joint pain and a feeling of weakness and headache for almost everyday now. I'm doing only fine with my asthma meds for now. I recovered fully without meds 9days ago. But 2days before my asthma came back. Some people's testimonies are true about the virus. Once you feel you're recovering, the virus puts you down again as if coming back for vengeance. I don't know how long this will go but the good thing is my lungs are fine by the CT scan. I'm searching several sources to bring down my asthma. This one's helping for sure. Thank you doctor. Stay home, stay safe. Follow the guidelines. This virus is surely a thing!
Should have washed your hands

AMAZING information!!!🙏🏻👍🏻
Number one Doctor P.Keyown to heavens.
People need to do breathing exercises every day especially during this coronavirus epidemic. It has helped me sleep better and as an asthmatic it’s helped for several years.
That makes me so happy to hear!
My grandmother has asthma and bad lungs, (she still runs around her big house doing all kinds of activities haha, she can't sit down for too long 😅) and your comment makes me feel very motivated to keep giving her exercises AND doing them myself as well ☺
You're a very beautiful lady, thank you so much for writing this comment!
All my love!
Valorie mad That’s awesome that your Grandma is so active. Doing the breathing exercises also helps with concentration and awareness and focus on that you’re actually breathing. If that makes sense. I should do them more often but I usually try to remember to do the breathing exercises when I get in bed because I have adhd especially at bed time where I can not get my brain to focus on one thing at a time. So the breathing exercises helps with that as well as strengthening the lungs.
Virgen Weed : And she died from the COPD? Breathing exercises isn’t medicine. It helps strengthen your lungs. Everyone should be doing this even if they don’t have any medical issues.
I will try it out, hope it helps
Definitely true! I’m thrilled that I came across McKeown’s work in January as I needed to get rid of mouth breathing day and night...and I did! 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you Patrick for all your instructions on nose breathing, it’s made a world of difference in my life.
Quite coincidentally I came across The Oxygen Advantage by Patrick McKeown about 6 months ago and have adopted the techniques including taping the mouth when sleeping at night. I do a lot of exercise, running and cycling, and it has transformed my performance for the better and my breathing is now properly controlled. When I started my BOLT score was around 15 seconds but now I'm up to 40. Another benefit is my sleep quality is much better and correct sleep also helps the immune system.

I have tried this today. I am 5 weeks into recovery from COVID-19 and although I experienced some breathlessness since the start it was just a week ago that I began to experience more I tense shortness of breath at night. I found other breathing exercises were putting too much pressure on my lungs and in turn I would experience palpitations which increased anxiety that comes with breathlessness. This was much more gentle and less forceful. I will try this again before I go to sleep, I'm hopeful this will help with my recovery.
I agree others create too much pressure
Claire Scarborough I’m currently on week 4 and still have the same symptoms as you, I’m going to try this exercise as often as I can
You healed up yet hun? Im praying that The Most High heal you completley
Are you fine now
Have you recovered now ? How is your health .
I wish I had known about this 4 months ago, before I got covid. After watching this video I now understand what went wrong. I've literally made myself sicker by breathing the wrong way. It's been 3,5 months now, still not recovered, but getting a little bit better by breathing better. I only hope there is no permanent damage...
I hope you are healing 100% 🙏
How are you doing these days?
It's been 2 months for me and I can't believe it takes so long to recover! I pray for no haul side effects for both of us! Doctors don't tell you anything about the correct breathing techniques !
@@SuperSoraya50 I'm approaching 2 months too and it's been rough. I can honestly say proper breathing has helped me so much. Some days I can't do anything more than a 20 min walk. Can't watch TV too much or do anything except eat and breathe. It does get better, very slowly. Make sure you eat healthy, stay hydrated, sleep well and try your best not to stress. One day at a time. I had 2 "relapses" where I got myself sick again by doing too much
@@dtla5052 I know! I walked on the beach for an hour last week, and got so tired, the heat in Florida makes my oxygen level decrease, so I can't stay too long! I do eat healthy, I am from France and always ate a Mediterranean diet. I used to be so active everyday, plus work as a server, and now I can't do anything, and I am getting bored sitting home watching TV. As far as sleep, it has worsen, and I am experiencing hair loss. I just started taking antibiotics for pneumonia, and all these issues are kind of getting me down at times! This virus from hell, is the worse illness I ever had of my 61 years of being alive!! I pray we both get well in Jesus name, and God restores us to perfect health! God bless you Jack!
@@SuperSoraya50 Amen. Yes it really is. I never been sick or had any health problems. I never expirenced fatigue before unless I was sprinting or doing heavy squats/deadlifts. Now I feel it all day long. Its really messed with my sleep too. I was working 2 jobs. Now I work 2 days a week and only 4 hours per shift. Can't really do much too and it was getting me down. I hear the hair loss from covid is only temporary and after a year you should be growing it back. I believe we are going to heal, even if it is slowly. One day at a time, sometimes the anxiety is bad so for me its one breathe at a time. I pray for our healing, God bless 🙏❤
I was having trouble with my breathing about three years ago, I was ready to go to the doctor, I did some research on line and came across nasal breathing so I gave it a try, I decided to do it all the time, within 24 hours something happened that made me take it seriously, my nose was completely clear for just about the first time in my life, I decided to do it 24 /7, it took a while for my lungs to improve but the bonuses were unbelievable, no shoulder or neck pain, very much improved posture just about perfect, my skin improved my old age marks have almost gone, I sleep very well, I go to sleep and when I wake up I’m in the same position, I don’t use tape, overall I feel so much healthier and I’m 80 in June, 24/7 is the way to go if you can do it, three months ago I was in hospital and five guys in my ward were sleeping with their mouths wide open, rather sad, you keep up the good work your a hero. Oh and I’ve started humming a lot.
Well done Barrie. Patrick
Well done Patrick I am 45 and I admire what you have done. I am recovering as well from traumas, stress, etc. That nearly killed me. And humming tunes in your immune system. Lucky you.... Thomas

Although not at 100 % still, I am much better. I am completely off the oxygen but still tend to run out of breath in situations I ever did before. I also do get tired faster, but that's ok, I'm just thankful I get to still be here for my 12 yr old daughter

@@christineboydstrongtower Yeah, I’m with you. I’m not going to get into my opinions on here, but there’s not really an at home treatment that doctors will tell you to follow. Thank you for taking the time to teach us these techniques, I appreciate this.
Thank you. Will incorporate this daily.
What I'm learning through my recovery, is the need to NOT PANIC. Several times, when having shortness of breath, I almost freaked out, making the matter SO much worse and unable to address the problem. Last night, I was in the kitchen cleaning up, when my breathing became really short, and I started to get dizzy. This time I kept calm, and said to myself, " Ok. Don't panic. Breathe. Sit down and get the oxygen on. It'll be ok" I realized that my eagerness to be well and resume regular activities is actually jeopordizing my recovery and potentially putting myself in danger of passing out. I need to go a little easier on myself (and I asked my husband to put one of my oxygen tanks in the kitchen). I also need to let my husband help me more sometimes, so that I can pace myself (which I feel bad about because he works so hard, but it's necessary until I'm at a point where I can do it again). I wonder if there are other women out there struggling with the strong desire to resume their usual, daily responsibilities, and having to let things go sometimes, or ask for help. I mean, We're the Momma's (the nurturers that take care of everyone else). It feels counter intuitive.
Sending prayers for everyone. Have a Merry Christmas! 🎄
I’m 18 I was suffering from anxiety for a while I got Covid not to long ago I was able to recover but am dealing with the after effects having hard time breathing feeling out of breath also having hard palpatations I understand what you are saying about the not panicking it’s hard not to when I you feel like your gonna have a heart attack but panicking makes the situation worse I am still trying to overcome my panic with the help of God I feel bad not being able to help around the house or do exercise like I used I will continue to Pray to God to help and give me strength God bless you and I hope you get better
@@jugogaming3614 Thanks very much for your reply. Not being able to breathe and getting heart palpitations would cause ANYONE to have anxiety. (nevermind the poor people that were already struggling with it) From what I've read, the healing process is a long one. I wish the hospitals prepared people for it with a little more knowledge about what to expect and how to deal with it, before sending Covid patients home to complete the healing process. Luckily, you're young, and I bet you'll heal much faster than older people like me. I'm learning that continuing to do breathing exercises to expand lung capacity, eating right, and getting plenty of rest, is really important, along with being patient, asking for help, and trying not to be too hard on yourself. (know it's going to take time, and try not to do too much too fast and end up having a scary episode, or worse yet, back in the hospital) I'm sending prayers for you. Please pray for me too, and all the people struggling with Covid.
Take care! ❤

This video is so helpful! I had COVID19 back in December 2019...I was VERY sick for 5 weeks (I had symptoms for 3 weeks before getting really really sick. Back them we didn’t even know that COVID-19 existed, I remember myself crying in bed... feeling like leaving this earth...not prepared to leave my dogs behind) . It is now fall of 2020 ...allergy season is here and I’m having some new allergy symptoms....one of them is that I’m finding myself out of breath. And that makes me feel heart palpitations. Heart palpitations make me anxious....anxiety doesn’t let me fall as sleep. I will be watching this video in it’s entirety.... and I will be practicing this breathing exercises.

Hi Linda!
I'm so glad to have reached at least one person with my comment about this man. He is truly an angel on earth in the he explains this so many times. He realizes that those of us with Covid-19 are in a panic mode and very scared. that
Hi Linda!
Thank you for replying to my comment about this remarkable man. He is truly an angel for us. He absolutely realizes that those of us with Covid-19 are in psychological panic mode, frightened and nervous especially if we are alone at home without any professional medical attention. That's why he is so repetitive. He drives it home to make sure we "get it".
In his video, he lovingly gives us the tools we need to be able to help ourselves.
He has made a very substantial contribution. If you're alone at home, it is important to monitor your vitals everyday. Like he mentions, see if you can find an oximeter. Try to find a blood pressure kit and a reliable thermometer. Record the readings in the morning when you wake up and in the evening. I hope for your speedy recovery.

Cured my asthma that I had for about 20 years. Had to use an inhaler around 5 times a day. THIS REALLY WORKS!!
Mr123slayer123 so happy you healed yourself! Thank you for sharing!!
How long did you practice these exercises before noticing a difference?
Many blessings to you and your family.
Such a great testimonial.
Well done. Patrick
Oxygen Advantage Hi I have a question. I think I have the virus, I have shortness of breath and I can’t sleep, i almost fall to sleep and are awakened by this inability to be able to swallow, it feels like anxiety , it’s really scary! any advice?
You are a very kind and generous person, thank you!
Thank you so much for this webinar. I started with an online Buteyko technique breathing course on March 22 and it isn't easy to change a breathing habit. Fortunately I am becoming more and more aware of positive physical changes. Your video is very illustrative and supportive and a most welcome addition to my course :0))
thank you so much Doc. You have educated me in the right way of doing breathething exercises and i have learned the benefits of nasal breathing. Very good explanations. Thank you so much. Will shear.
Thank You During this stay at home situation I've been reading & audiobook listening to Oxygen Advantage. I am happy I found you on Utube.

Some of the best information I could find.
I find the connection between humming and the use of 'Ommmm' by Buddhist while meditation to be interesting.
I would like to read more about the physiology of humming/meditation/moaning. I will start with McKeown's books to see what references come up.
Yes, same idea.
What is humming?
backrack01 Making an OMMMM sound.
@@backrack01 creating a tone/sound with closed mouth...as if you know the melody but not the words.....
Thank you is WAS a breath of fresh air!👍
This video is helping me now.
Thank you very much , I am breathing so much slower, calmer, deeper , really enjoyed the exercises
This is fascinating and so very helpful. I'm going to pass this onto others. Thank you for taking the time to do this post.
Thanks Linda. Patrick
Absolute perfect explanation of these vital breathing techniques and exercises - done with simplicity and care with just the right amount of repetition for the information to sink right in. Learned of you from Laird Hamilton and found my own cardio endurance has multiplied greatly - we just haven't been using our system to the highest capacity or efficiency, from poor breathing. It also seems to keep you in a feeling of presence and calm, all day, too. Everything seems to just work better. Thank you.
Xcellent including the humming .you teach with love and care
Thank you for taking this time and sharing this information and breathing techniques. As a 3-time Open-Heart Surgery Patient w/Congestive Heart Failure, Sleep Apnea & Asthma. I found these breathing exercises most valuable and helpful to my overall oxygen saturation, 99% was displayed throughout your video as I continued the LSD Breathing. I remembered during first 12hrs following Aortic Valve Replacement 20yrs ago, I breathed just like your LSD Breathing, in hopes that making myself breathe slowly and deeply, would help to get the ventilator removed sooner rather than later. It worked! I was removed from the Ventilator many hours sooner than anticipated. It makes so much sense now, after listening to you in this video. Thank you
Thank you so much. Recovering from Covid with pneumonia blood clots and PE. I’m 3 months out from beginning of Covid these exercises seem so much more calming and affective then what I was told
God bless you, hope you are feeling better these days 🙏
Thank you, i will practice daily.
Your advice on hands clasped around the midsection under the ribs to monitor breaths is excellent. Thank you.
