CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The fates of Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise) and the others are explained -- executed, all of them.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
At the absolute height of World War II, German generals hatch a daring plan to assassinate Adolf Hitler and effectively render the German war machine impotent. Directed by Bryan Singer, Valkyrie stars Tom Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the real-life mastermind behind the elaborate plot known as Project Valkyrie: a plan to assassinate Hitler and overthrow his government from the inside. Stauffenberg has been a loyal soldier and an asset to the Reich for his entire military career, but after losing an eye, a hand, and three fingers in an Allied bombing, he reaches a breaking point. The destructive madness that his country is unleashing on the world has become too terrible for the colonel to stand silent. He joins the resistance movement -- a treasonous act, punishable by death -- and risks his life and the life of his family for the chance to change history. Comprised of high-ranking officials working in secret, the German Resistance has access to the inner workings of the government and military, putting them in the perfect position to dispatch the dictator and then use his own official contingency plan to seize power -

I LOVE how the Colonel is actually giving advice to his superior officer on how to face death "look them in the eyes" and I REALLY LOVE how the Colonel's lieutenant stands in the way of him and the firing squad. The Colonel had everything to lose (beautiful wife, beautiful children) yet he knew it all meant nothing if he allowed a monster like Hitler to continue. Some things are a matter of duty.

That part when Stauffenberg's friend Lieutenant Haefte walks in front of him to take the bullets in order to give him a few more moments of life as a gesture of friendship, and loyalty is very touching. This movie was criminally underrated, and not just among the Biopics or History or War genres, in general. The meticulous care and detail that went into every uniform, every weapon, every detail of set and background. Even the careful recreation of this scene according to the historical accounts of it was down to the detail (i.e. Werner von Haeften, the Lt. aide to Stauffenberg really did jump the line and shield Stauffenberg in a final act of defiance and show of loyalty). I mean when you get a free second look at the Wikipedia page for this movie and hover your mouse over the actors and their real life counterparts, some of them are uncanny, not just Tom. Without a doubt though, Bill Nighy stole this film, his performance as Olbricht was phenomenal. The critical reception of this film and it's lack of awards is just criminal.
But there was some lapse in the most iconic scene in this movie where colonel meet hitler in berhdof..hitler siting reich marshal goring as invasion is undercontrol is not correct.

In the UK it is part of our curriculum if you are taking GCSE History no matter what courses you will likely learn about plans to kill Hitler.
@Michael Martin who are referring coward to?
Indeed, and while they'd be at perhaps they might also shed some light on the hundreds of thousands (more?) German civilians who did realise their mistake in ever supporting Hitler but couldn't do much about it because as it was too late to resist. And whose voices were never heard. It's one thing to sacrifice your own life for a cause you believe in, but quite another to have your family be deported too. It's where most normal people certainly draw the line. Add to that the horrors inflicted upon civilians by the advancing Red Army. That's a bad situation to be in and probably be enough cause for many a man today to fight on, regardless of politics. Why is everything always reduced to right and wrong? Life is never that simple. It's for reasons like this that history repeats itself, because we teach our children a lame, fairytale version of what really transpired.
While Operation Valkyrie was the biggest planned assassination of Hitler and the only one involving the use of the reserve army, it was only one of many attempts.

And for a Hollywood movie, it's historically accurate based on first-hand accounts, photos, newsreels, Gestapo and SS records, and talks with the actual families of the conspirators. It's a great story that has to be told.
"If a soldier in a position of highest authority in such times sees his duties and tasks only within the limits of his military responsibilities, without consciousness of his higher responsibility to the whole people, then he shows a lack of greatness, a lack of comprehension of responsibility. Extraordinary times demand extraordinary actions."
- Ludwig Beck
What makes it more underrated is that there is a German version of this plot which doesn't come close to being anywhere near as good or accurate.
It's so amazing that they were able to film this in the exact location where those men were really executed
The manner Herr Major Remer looks up at General Fromm after it is all over is ominous.
Much of the movie takes place in the offices of Bendlerblock which served as the offices for the military operations of the Third Reich's military command. The courtyard of Bendlerblock is where Colonel Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg and the other conspirators were executed. Some of the filming of the movie took place at the actual building. This building is now the Memorial to the German Resistance (German: Gedenkstätte Deutscher Widerstand). The statement in the final slide of the movie is from a plaque near the site of execution at the Memorial.
Stauffenberg to Olbricht: "Steady, and die bravely."
Also Stauffenberg: *loses his cool*
R.I.P all who died.
I'm glad at the end the movie mentions there were several assassination attempts on Hitler by Germans. Many happened before Germany began to lose and even before the war even began.
Some genuine man love,
Don't think I've ever cared for someone-not-family enough to take their place in front of a firing squad to purchase them a few more seconds of life.
0:47, what a way to go. Not only will you be suffocating to death by hanging (which in itself is extremely painful), but the wire will also be cutting your throat, just compounding the agony.
"Look them in the eye. They'll remember you."

May your soul Rest In Peace Claus von Stauffenberg. 😢
it Secret Germany not sacred lol
@@anxietydisorders5917 its sacred
The general was a devout catholic
@@eugenlovin6788 dude stauffenberg was a member of the group called "secret germany" 🙄
0:30 Dr Schenck no!!!
(Only a true researcher in the arts of downfall would know who this character is)
Oh yes, Christian Berkel who plays both German characters in Downfall and Valkyrie.
This is what true patriots look like. Not allegiance to one man but to your country and its people
And now the German people are being replaced by a communist government and their national sovereignty is challenged.
@@benharrison3479 lmfao sir what. Germany is as strong and prosperous as ever. Strongest economy in all of Europe, one of the most respected countries in production and export, extremely high standard of living, highly functioning social safety net and employment etc etc. You're just mad that 10% of the population is non-white lmfao and for that you say their "national sovereignty" is being challenged?
@bob yob do they speak english? Or have murica laws... thanks god we don.t.
@@benharrison3479 That's because their leaders are not loyal to their country, but are pretty loyal to money, Power, EU and UNO.
I am a German/Bavarian decent it's very extremely for me too watch it, almost impossible to see them suffered that way. Anyway it's part of German history, in Germany they're considered to be heroes to stand up Hitler Germany.
Agreed!!👍
Only people from Bavaria like to form their own identity. It reminds me of people from Texas in America
@@4realjacob637 nothing wrong having an identity
The place where they filmed this, is the same place where Stauffenberg and company was executed

I simply cannot get myself to watch this scene without emotions overcoming me and resulting me in tears.
I remembered that the Chief of Berlin Police was also executed on the DVD version , but he isnt shown up in this clip .
Fun fact: Goerdeler being hung by piano wire was on purpose to prolong his pain since the neck won't break.
I refuse to live under the mercy of people who would kill me if they had the chance. I will not live in fear.
Beautiful scene, beautiful movie.
It's always a good thing when people stand up to tyranny, even if they were those who helped it happen.
Progress is a positive thing.
In today's world, the people in Russia protesting against war on Ukraine and is stand up to Putin's Tyranny.
Tyranny?!
This scene at the end makes me cry and proud even that I am not German - what kind of people there were in their time. It's hard to even imagine now.
A deep bow for these heroes!
Great movie. ❤️
you are not german but you can be zionist or you are zionist
I’m a RuZZian ❤️
I am from Pakistan but that *LONG LIVE SACRED GERMANY* made me a Patriot German for 10 solid minutes.
I still am.
An Indian and a Pakistani we can be friends as Patriots to sacred Germany brother.
The little extra sadistic touch of executing them one-by-one instead of all at once. Just so that the last moments of those who weren’t the first to go would be fearful of their coming fate.
1:54 Erwin von Witzleben was very close with his prediction, a hero and a prophet in this scene.
I, as a German, have to say that I am amazed and ashamed watching this... It is a history changing moment that we all know about.
Gotta love Tom Cruise one handing that fire fight near the end like a boss tho. 😂
I can't believe this along with the dark knight both came out in 2008.......and least of all during the summer. 😔
One minute of silence for this heroes🌹
