Saying she did something wrong and having proof are 2 different things. If shes done nothing wrong she will still be labeled as guilty because people, including many black people, have broadcast statements of guilt against her without having any proof. As a black woman I thought that the money would be used to help victims by for example help pay for lawyers and everything. These police departments need to be sued and loose money, that’s how they’ll start watching what they do on the job!
I felt really disappointed when I found out what she did with the money, and she never sat right with my spirit.
What angers me the most, is that she’s giving the republicans and racists ammunition to discredit everything people protested, prayed and donated for.

As someone who works in nonprofit for 10 years or so can legit say what started out as grassroots movement got turned into a multi million dollar profiting scheme to benefit Patrisse and her family. She was wrong most nonprofits fail because of lack of donations needed to sustain the work. They made millions of dollars hand of over fist of people wanting to support the perceived image of their work. Sadly beyond protests I haven’t seen on tanglible thing BLM has done or says they’ve done for the community besides protest.
Secondly all reputable and well organized nonprofits have a governing board with bylaws. I’ve never heard of a nonprofit where the founder paid themselves a salary in the millions. Usually that’s something a board has to approve of let alone massive purchases like a multi million dollar invest home in a white upper class neighborhood.
That’s not an investment for a nonprofit a designated headquarters would have been an investment, putting millions in a closed trust that can only be accessed by vote of the board is an investment. Non profits money should be liquid, meaning they should have access to it whenever they need it. You don’t have that with a house.
But she’s in control of everything She’s in control funneling money to for unjustified work. And there’s no one stopping her. If you want to give your money to worthy black causes doing the real work google them and see what their reputations are before donating. Your not supposed to become wealthy starting a nonprofit I’m sorry that’s not it’s goal. You shouldn’t be making millions while those you claim to serve are still suffering.

NOW, in 2022, we as black ppl are having opportunities to sit at tables and go through doors our parents, their parents, may have never thought we could. Then when we get opportunities like patrisse did to truly make a difference for our culture, but to also take advantage of that opportunity at such a hurtful, angry time with losing George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Sandra bland, etc. why? Funky praises to you and a hallelujah over here for you.
ALL your questions are valid and anyone who made a monetary donation of any kind has the right to ask where the money is going and what is will be used for. Non-profits are suppose to have a board of directors, bylaws, a mission, budgets, financial statements, scheduled meetings and the completion of timely filed tax returns. If all these things and more aren’t done the status of being a non-profit can be taken away. If questions are continuing to be raised and the answers are not satisfactory the states where the non-profit status was requested will start investigating the non-profit.
I would like to have seen the money used toward reparations and as much of whatever we as black folks feel we need at the time - meaning the use of the donations could continue to change as our needs change.
I’m heavily praying for her and if she’s done anything unethical or illegal, my prayer is that she corrects it and does right by black folks to keep the BLM moved going on forever.

Funky thank you for responding because like the other commenters I didn't like this when the reports came out. What galls me is that Trump did the same thing with his PACS and charities and the media has called him out about it. And yes we know how "they" get away with this shit all the time but they ain't our focus because you better sweep your own front porch before you complain about someone else's.
Why in the hell would you purchase a home in a gated predominantly white neighborhood? Doesn't that negate the whole point of the organization? Black people also have neighborhoods just as good or better than other white neighborhoods.
I can understand buying assets but it would be better like Funky said to buy commercial real estate first, then residential homes to help out families in crisis (e.g. battered women shelter, a family can stay in the home if a wrongly accused person is in jail/on trial and the family has lost income, home due to this crisis, etc). Are they even purchasing stocks, and investments, etc that can give the organization weight in dealing with certain companies especially if something pops off? It's easier to boycott a company and make them pay attention if you have a large portion of their shares.
No one is saying that she and the others must live in "poverty" but the optics ain't looking good at all with these mansions.
You can employ relatives and friends but you better make sure they are above reproach because it will come back and bite you in the ass.

Okay so here's the thing. When non-profits raise money and get donations, the money doesn't just go sit in the bank. It needs to yes of course be spent on maintaining the organization, doing the charitable causes and paying people, but ultimately the money should be invested somewhere. While buying an office building funky practically would make sense, building aren't assets. From an accounting perspective they are depreciation, and lose value over time. So buying a home would be a tangible asset, similar to if she invested the money into the stock market.
The thing that folks don't understand is that this is how a lot of non-profits are set up. Many companies and celebrities set up charitable organizations as a way to yes do the right thing, but also invest that money into their own companies stocks through investing. They also do that as a way to move their own money into assets that can't be taxed as well. It's very shady but it is legal. Optically, white folks have been looking for ways to discredit BLM and I think people's general ignorance of how the came works make the scrutiny very convenient.
I think the BLM organization did what it was supposed to do. But we need to decide as a people what we actually want. The hashtags are great but it's not progress. What's actually going on. How can we increase black wealth and ownership in stuff. Just my two cents.
