Sorry about the loss of your friend Charlie. But what a video! Those steam engines are still cooler than any modern diesel hands down.

great video.....haunting whistle........thanks for posting. Give my regards to Mr. Bardens' family for their terrible loss. You hang in there, Charlie, sounds like we are both going through some shit these days.

John was a good friend of mine. I meet him at the NCTM when I was 16 and he taught me a ton about steam engines. I helped him some on working on the little 0-4-0 there at Denton. I went with him several years in a row to the ET&WNC convention in Boone and over in Tennessee at the Doe River Gorge. In the video here when they pass the camera John of course is the engineer and I see Tim Hill on the other side there as fireman which it was either Tim or Ken Dillon firing for John. I've probably meet you Charlie and not know it. I really like the live steam engine John had of the Tweetsie #12. He was a blast to hang out with and just kept you laughing most of the time. We'll have to get up with one another sometime and talk some about John and how unique he was. Let me know where to send it and I'll send you my phone number. 👍

I'm 2 years late to this but, seeing you mention my dad Tim brought a tear to my eye. I spent almost all my summers as a kid in the cab of that locomotive with the both of them and went on many many adventures with them to various preservation railroads and conventions and so forth as well. Went down the rabbit hole and found this video and reading your comment about how special he was, along with this video has me missing John more than anything. I was too young to appreciate it at the time but being older now these are nothing short of incredible memories i have and ones that i very much miss. It's good to know people still remember him and he's still talked about. To this day my dad hasn't set foot in a steam locomotive since his passing.

@@MxCallX I haven't talked to Tim in a long time. It was several years before John died that my life took me in a different direction and I lost contact with all of those guys. How is your father? I think I remember you as a very little guy as well tagging along with him sometimes. I figured one day when I was older I'd come back around to working on steam locomotives again with them as a hobby like they enjoyed doing but unfortunately I haven't made it back to that part of my life. I'd love to speak to your father and see how he's been. I had a ton of fun with him and John and the group of guys and made lots of unforgettable memories going places with them. Tell your father I said hello and that I'm doing well and hope he is. My full name is William Bryant but he'll remember me as just Wil.

@@williambryant5946 i'm really late getting back to this, hoped it would give me a notification if someone replied but it didn't. My dad and i have not made a return to any steam preservation operations since Johns passing either. He's been good but it's been a massive part of our lives missing sadly. As i type this we're both going down the rabbit hole of revisiting the many youtube videos of the locomotive and the memories running there. I mentioned your name to him and he remembered you so i let him know you said hello.

@@MxCallX Awesome. Glad that you commented on my first comment. Also happy y'all are doing well. It's been a long time for myself as far as working on any steam locomotives aswell. Nice talking with you and in doing so getting wonderful old memories stirred up and thinking about the great time I spent with the "Wrong Crowd" from Spencer Shops. I've still got my denim shirt. Your father should know what I'm talking about. Good, fun times. 👍

He definitely knew how to and enjoyed "playing" the whistle. Always knew when he was at the controls of anything with a steam whistle. 👍
