when I see people complaining that the range isn't high enough especially when towing, I'm wondering if they complain that the Toyota Yaris or those microcars (Fiat500) about how they can't tow 10,000lbs! Would those complainers actually buy a tiny car and then complain or would they do their homework and buy the appropriate vehicle for their needs? So, if you're gonna tow over long distance often then EVs are not for you (yet). But if you're gonna stay within a certain range I bet an EV might sound interesting especially when doing a lot of stop & go!

Though this truck looks amazing and would likely suit most people who occasionally need a truck for truck things, I cannot wrap my head around a $100k vehicle that can't make it from Toronto to Ottawa without stopping.

    • @JustinPritchard
      @JustinPritchard  Před rokem +5

Toronto to Ottawa by car is 450 km. The range of this test truck is just shy of 500.
At room temperature, I could confidently make that drive non-stop. In the winter, I would have to spend about 15 seconds dealing with the charger: once while I hook it up to the truck, and once when I return to disconnect.
The actual charging takes place while I grab a bio-break and coffee, sufficient to add 100 km or more to the battery if required.

I too have driven over 500km and I have also towed 3 yards of dirt in a dump trailer (approx 7000lb) over 200km and had plenty of charge to spare. Best towing truck I've ever driven including heavy duty diesels. Instant, smooth, powerful torque with no lag or transmission hunting. Could probably beat most cars off the line while towing 7000lbs. For me the lightning is an absolutely amazing utility/work truck but I will say, If you do a lot of LONG DISTANCE towing, then this might not be the truck for you. No different then if you want to tow 10 000 lbs, you don't buy a motorcycle. We all have different use cases.

Appreciated your thorough and enthusiastic review of the Lightning. I can only wish you had this weeks -20 to -30*C temperatures right here in Ontario. The 50/50 weight balance etc is great. However, have you ever arrived at the only fast charger in town and it's DOA? You can't plug into the street 110V. and I'd never buy a truck with 100's of pounds of glass roof. On a $100,000.00 truck the EV payback will be sometime in 2040... maybe. Hope I'm wrong.

    • @davemurphy7575

You can plug in with 110v with the charger they send you. The XLT, just down from the Lariat was only 58k. Considering a new, gas version of a loaded 150 XLT gas vehicle can cost upwards of 47k and just 430 HP, the lightning is far superior outside of towing. I've also never arrived at a charging station that is DOA. I'm in a state with dozens of chargers all over.

You should only fully charge to 100% for long road trips that you will be leaving on soon after reaching 100%. Its not good to fully charge everyday while leaving sitting on your driveway. For everyday use you should charge to 80 -90% to maintain good battery health. Some vehicles are equipped with a LFP chemistry type battery packs which is recommended to fully charge to 100% all the time but it's not the case with Ford vehicles yet.
All to say know what type of battery pack you have and if recommended to fully charge to 100% when not being used right away as this can accelerate battery degradation and decrease its life and usable range.

Great review, thank you! I bought the same truck in California 5 months ago and absolutely love it. Because of "Range anxiety" and other factors there are tons of these higher-end models sitting on dealer lots, we got an amazing deal for a loaded 2022 Platinum model with 10K MILES on it for $66k. We also got $10k for our 2014 Prius. So with tax, we paid around $61k. I had an EV charger put in the garage and it costs us about $4 to get 20% added. We normally don't let the battery dip below 45% and only charge it to 65%. Research from a University in Australia says you can more than double the life span of your battery that way. There's a detailed CZcams video on it czcams.com/video/y9WqIEAYwZo/video.htmlsi=3slEG1TZFgtTRK8Z. Obviously, everybody’s situation is different, but for us, this works out great. It's been paid for for years garaged all it's life still looks great and spent all it's life in southern Wisconsin . I know diesel fuel is about 4.00 $ a gallon and it gets about 17 mi per gallon and it cost about 42,000 $ new. It will tow anything I can put behind it . If that new Ford costs over 90,000 $ it will take a lot of diesel fuel to make up the payment for it, and it's only a half ton that will not tow much. Pretty much a toy.

So it had a range of 321km in your driveway at start up. Seems to me if you were to tow that would be a nightmare. In Sudbury and other areas north of parry sound there is not alot of charging infrastructure available for the F150 lightning. A few points of the video. You had to buy a coffee, use the washroom and check emails. You did not explain how much it cost to charge the pickup from the DC fast charge. if you make lets say $55-75 per hour stopping at a gas station for a few mins vs 1 hr is equal in your time. For me I do trips from Mississauga to French River towing a boat. North of barrie there are barely any DC fast charges. My point is if the lightning was halted production something is not right. I would take the hybrid and 136 litre tank based on convenience alone.

Where I live in northern Ontario, most of our electricity is hydroelectric, so we call it a hydro bill.

Do Canadians use trucks for construction or for hauling materials or tow campers. Until you do an honest review of what a truck is actually used for, your just blowing smoke😂 if you’re honest then do a real test and you will have to admit to your viewership that it’s just a car with terrible range and a charging application that was developed in 2019 and ignored till now. The Bluetooth issues. The mapping is old and glitchy. The crappy little clips that hold the charging port cover on fail and fall right off by themselves. Cmon man you make this thing sound like a reliable work truck! Very misleading take on the lightning.

Huh? Where do I make it sound like a reliable work truck? Where do I say misleading things?
      Common, timecodes. List em.
      Chop chop, bobo.

It's an over prices piece of poo. It looks like a truck but can't work like one.
