  • Found a great deal on the just-released Ruger-built Marlin 1894 in .357 Mag and had to buy it! I've heard a couple of horror stories about the latest release from Marlin in regards to feeding and function issues.
    I took mine from the box to the range to see if it would run.

    Shooting to get groups, rest the fore end on the bag, not the feed tube. It is attached to the barrel by way of the barrel band and changes the harmonics of the barrel. You'll be shooting of hand holding the fore end and it will hit in a different spot. I have several Marlin lever guns and I don't shove the bullet in till the gate closes anymore. Just far enough that it doesn't come flying back out, and use the next round to send it home and repeat till full. You will end up killing your thumb pushing the shells all the way in. That is the way I used to do it until a friend showed me how he did it. I've never done it the old way since. I found out that adjusting elevation can sometimes effect windage on some of those slide ramp sights. before drifting the sight, adjust the elevation first and check that that ramp is standing straight up. Check again after drifting cause they can lay over from time to time. I'm not telling you what to do, just sharing some experience to save time.

      I agree. I have 4 lever guns now, and that's how I load em too. Just stop at the edge and push it in with the bext round, allot easier. I have the older JM 1894c in 357 mag, a smooth good shooing rifle.

    I agree with one of your other posters, in that I’ve never seen a lever gun that would shoot decently resting on the mag tube. That grouping would be what I’d expect with that rest. Use the forearm on the bag, and snug the stock into your shoulder. I’ve been shooting lever actions since childhood, and I’m a fair way from that now, so lots of experience. Give that little rifle some love and it’ll perform much better. Also an idea to re evaluate the action and trigger after a few hundred rounds.

    Good video man. I am getting really into leverguns lately. I love 357 as a cartridge, so that is what I am getting leverguns in. Put a Miroku made winchester 1873 on layaway recently and I almost don't want to shoot it because it is so pretty and nice. So I went and bought a Rossi R92. Would like a good middle ground. I am not fond of the flaws with Henry rifles, but maybe after they remedy some things.

    My Ruger 44 Mag is smooth as glass, Ruger did a fine job with it. Your rifle just needs a few drops of oil, it will smooth up.

    I thought that I would add a second comment since they are cheap. The comments,not the rifle. I've wanted a small carbine in .38-357 mag for quite sometime. This is the best action of them all. Very strong. It also is the only action that feeds both .38 and .357 with reliability. As stated in another comment, since Ruger is now making these I wouldnt hesitate to buy one.

      I have a Henry Big Boy (the Classic model now), a Uberti 1873 deluxe, a JM Marlin 1894c, and a newer Rossi 1892 all of wich are in 357mag/38 spl. and they all run both great. For the money the newer Rossi's are a good riflr, a few minor tweaks and they're great, allot better quality and machining/smoothness than older ones yrs ago.

    I recently bought a henry big boy steel in 45 colt. Ruger kept pushing 44 mag. & 357 mag. but no 45 colt. Many people like the versatility of this round. Hopefully Ruger will offer this round in the future.

    I have a 1894 in .44
    It groups similarly to yours which is horrible. My super Blackhawk shoots tighter groups. I’m hoping it’s the buckhorn sights. I ordered a rail to put a scope on just for testing. If the groups shrink enough, I’ll put a skinner peep sight on it

    Bought import 94-lever in 38/357. Upon bring home it was clear no version of 357 would cycle RK would not take same hour return never shot. Called Rossi and they say send in for adjustment under warranty and in 3-6 month could get new gun back. It did however cycle the 38sp without fail. Have read of others with reverse issue cycle 357 but not feed 38sp. Sighting was brillo. Found that reload 38sp brass with same load cup as used on Lee handloader and was much hotter round ran several hundred thru sold to friend and between us gun cycled 3to5k rounds. Just sad it not cycle the 357

    • @andrewyording4284
      @andrewyording4284 Před 5 měsíci

      Most lever actions in 357 and 38 spl. the manual says to use 158 grain for 38 spl bullets, because the length is slightly shorter 38's might not cycle as well. same thing with 44 mag / 44 spl levers. It is important to learn how to quickly throw the lever both ways to cycle the rounds properly, but especially using 38 spl rds. My older JM Marlin 1894 357/38spl cycles both just fine, and smooth as butter.

    Don't shove each round into the mag tube. Stick the first one in half way, then push it in with the next round half way, and so on.

    I do believe that Ruger taking over Marlin was a big step in the right direction. I hope that they reintrduce the 1894 cp. Ported 16 inch barrel. I ve wanted one but they are hard to come by. Now the next thing Ruger should do is buy Colt Firearms and save that company

      I would probably go with the Ruglin. It is lighter, slimmer, and just feels better. My Henry Black in .45 Colt is awesome, but much chunkier, heavier, and about the same in quality. Ruger did good!

    If you're good at taking it apart, polish the hole in the frame where the magazine tube enters. Also, the magazine spring can be shortened to make it easier to load and cycle. 3" outside the magazine tube is long enough. Cowboy Action Shooters polish and wax the inside of the magazine tube. Is the magazine tube follower still plastic? I have one of the old JM models 1894c with 18" barrel.

    My 1884c made in the mid-2000's is very coal sensitive...I shoot cowboy action with it and it will not cycle 38 special 125 grain cartridges, they are too short. .357 cycle ok but I can only get 9 in the magazine. I f I liad .38 special with 158 grain SWC to 1.459 Coal they cycle fine...just an fyi...

    • @andrewyording4284
      @andrewyording4284 Před 5 měsíci

      Most manuals for 357 like my Henry state to use 158 grain 38 spl bullets to help prevent those issuse. But, it's an issue with "some" 357 levers, but not all. I have 4 different levers they all cycle 38's fine. 38's are a bit shorter hence the possible issue, same thing with 44mag levers

    Not my kind of accuracy I would accept.
    I build my own rifles and sell custom made AR 15 & AR 10 uppers using all Pac Nor SS super match barrels for spot on accuracy.
    The good humor on this is at least doesn't shoot the 2 feet + groups at 100 yards a garbage rod Russian Mosin rifle does

      Hmm .. odd . Wonder why we zeroed our 14's in BCT using a sand bag rest ?! Did the same with my 16 in RVN during I.C. Orientation , as we all did . The 1,000 meter matches use bags , also .

      Unless you mean because he is resting the " magazine tube " on the bag , rather than the hand guard !? Even still , I find it hard to believe that would create that group at just 55yds !! Even when I joined my last unit in RVN with some 75th guys . We went to the dump and I zeroed my CAR using a sand bag . For clarity , I was a plain Jane 91B ( medic ) . I was NOT Ranger trained . Have to glide . Have a great NYE , and I hope 24 is a hell of a lot better !! 68-71 Army ....

    I've had 3 Marlin 44 1894's: WHAT A WASTE!! NONE ever worked; one out of 50 rounds would load!! SHOW us the action; the 1873 would lift, align then feed rounds straight in...these 1894's angle-up push rounds relying on luck and a prayer they'll chamber!!! DID RUGER FIX THIS CREATING A NEEDED WORKING ACTION??? LIKELY NOT as they implied in that disclaimer!!!

    • @andrewyording4284

      I respectfully disagree. I have an older made in 1997 JM Marlin 1894c 357 mag micro grooved barrel and it's one of my favorite levers, I have 4. You're right on the 1873, I have a Uberti, awesome shooter,always cycles.

    • @andrewyording4284
      @andrewyording4284 Před 5 měsíci

      PS: Henry copied the Marlin bolt design, one is square the other rounded, but same type bolt action. Henry's are great guns but you do need to hold em straight not at a side angle or you'll have an issue. But this bolt is ALLOT stronger than the 1873 design, However I've not had any issues with 357 mag in my 1873, a Uberti.
