- David Ebershoff's award-winning book The Danish Girl is being adapted into a musical.
The piece follows Danish transgender woman Lili Elbe, one of the first people in the world to undergo reassignment surgery. Elbe was married to artist Gerda Gottlieb and became the subject of many of Gerda's paintings in the 1920s. The book was previously turned into an award-winning film in 2015.
Composed by Alex Parker with book and lyrics by Katie Lam, the musical is still in its development phase, but you can have a first listen to one of the tracks from the show, entitled "Silk", below.
The number is performed by transgender New York actress and Lucille Lortel Award nominee L Morgan Lee (A Strange Loop), accompanied by a choir put together in collaboration with the Trans Voices Company as well as a ten-piece band. It includes nine trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming vocalists.
The new musical has also addressed how it casts its company - aside from the two leads, roles will only be set by vocal range, rather than gender, age or any other markers.
The creative team is actively wanting to bring trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming performers on board for the development process - you can reach out at info@tdgmusical.com. - Zábava
love that they cast a trans woman for the lead!
They DID?

Rob’s voice is perfection
Brilliant Laura and Alex x
Oh you can just TELL this musical is going to be phenomenal
Fabulous
Such a delightful singer, just love his voice. Must try and see this show when we are able to go back into the theatres again. Do we know where or when? Enjoyed the film.
Stunning in EVERY WAY
Oh Rob its just so moving and beautiful ...well done Maureen
Absolutely beautiful, Rob. And absolutely beautiful, Alex.
Very nice and talented man. I've seen him several times in les miserables and titanic. Met him numerous times too x
Who did he play in Titanic???
@@esteraulrich-oltean2162 He played Fleet, Look Out off The Majestic(the one who sings No Moon near the end of Act 1)!
I saw him for the first time, as well as Brian Stokes Mitchell( :D ), playing Fabrizio at the LA Opera's 2018 production of The Light in the Piazza with Dove Cameron and Renee Fleming!
He was very endearing in that as well! :)
For some reason, I keep thinking he'd be fantastic as Anatole Kuragin in a future production of Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812.
Has he actually been cast as Claude then?
I hope they cast a trans performer in the title role. Eddie was very good in the film and a more sensitive choice than Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie, but we have come a long way since the film was made and need to go for for someone trans.
Don’t worry, trans people throughout this production xx
Is he playing the lead? The song sounds like a love song about a woman but wasn't sure if he's playing a trans woman and singing about discovering the woman within?
Beautifully sung either way!
Rob is playing the love interest Claude. I believe they cast a wonderful trans actress called L Morgan Lee in the title role, which is awesome.
@@SamGibbins thanks!
It's awesome that trans actors are getting visibility on stage and screen 😁
Hi Sam, Yes here, Rob is performing Claude's song, love interest of Lili. We have several trans actors involved in this project and 4 trans consultants. We are hoping to fill the crew and creatives with trans talent. xx
@@harrisonwilliams4962 That's fantastic news, really enjoying what I've heard of the show so far. I'm excited to see where it goes!
