- There's a quiet and a calm from José González that amplify his words. This has never been truer than on his new album, Vestiges & Claws. The songs are full of abstract imagery - more paintings than stories. He performed this song, "With The Ink of A Ghost," at my desk.
Idle as a wave
Moving out at sea
Cruising without sound
Molding what's to be
Serene between the trace
Serene with the tide and ink of a ghost
González is a 36 year old singer from Gothenburg, Sweden. You may have also heard Junip, his noisier band. But here, with a small group, the music is spacious, somewhat sensual. His classical guitar chords are melodic, the harmonies adventurous, his voice soothing. These are his first new solo songs in seven years and this soft-spoken, warmhearted singer left an imprint at the Tiny Desk that was gentle and long lasting. I only hope it's not seven more years before he brings us more new songs.-- BOB BOILEN

Who’s here in 2024 🎉
Hi🎉
Here now needing inspiration
He's from my lovely town of Gothenburg in Sweden, and I have the pleasure of bumping into him occasionally. He is amazing
Been wanting to visit there for a long time!!
First time I heard him was with a swedish band called "Niccokick". This was ike 10 years ago... Crazy!
💛💕
lucky you :)
I thought he was from Latin America???colombia?
He's so patient with his words and so tender, he shows that you don't need to be screaming and flashy to get a story across. Love this man and his art.
You obviously don't know Bill Callahan yet then? x
“Beautiful things don’t ask for attention” ;)
It's easy when you have an attentive audience. It's a lot harder when you're talking to people in general who tend to interrupt and not pay attention.
his voice is like a reminder that there is still something good in this world.
His voice is like a soothing drive down a country road...brisk fall air...and slowly falling leaves.
idk why but this brought tears to my eyes
I was introduced to Jose Gonzalez from his song at the end of Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I am so glad I learned who he was. His music brings such a calm to my spirit.
One of my favorite things about him that I'm only gleaning from these live performances is how he seems to radiate humility. A trait I truly do hope to register into my own spirit on a daily basis.
Music like this helps to cultivate it...
Do you guys realize how incredibly amazing the song With the Ink of a Ghost is? It's a friggin masterpiece 😭 it makes me feel every emotion ever.
It sure is amazing!
@@geekdesprairies yesss
Yes.
His music is soothing, perfectly made reminding us to always slow down, appreciate and live each moment we have on earth. I love you, Jose!
after hearing this i feel like sailing around the tip of Patagonia and hiking a mountain, watching the sunset over a fire and finding peace in nature.
Ohhh my patagonia 🍄
I really, really love this. It's like Paul Simon and Wes Anderson started a band.
COMMENT OF THE YEAR =)
I love both of them but i dont really get it.. care to explain..? James Wallace
Bayu Wikranta it’s a way of saying it’s like indie folk
Right on! Lol
Was lucky enough to see José and Sia performing together with Zero 7 in 2006 on their tour for The Garden album. That was pretty amazing.
This's perfect for a calm & serene morning
Every age has its turn
Every branch of the tree has to learn
Learn to grow, find its way,
Make the best of this short-lived stay
This dude is truly a music god.
‘Every age’ is such a powerful song. So true. Brilliant.
There's something about woodwinds in Jose Gonzalez accompaniments that just destroy me. Always so haunting. He's the greatest.
It’s awesome whenever he implements percussion in his songs too! That moment for me was in What Will 👏🏾
I cloooose my eeeeyes
only for a moment
and the moment's gone
hahaha exactly what i was thinking... "hello darkness my old friend"
I was thinking the samee wwwhat :D
right
Whistling is so underrated.
probably one of the most influential musicians during my 20s. Saw him live and talked to him once. I love his fingerpicking style and sweet voice and odd lyrics!
what an artist. his accompanying musicians can't help but feel the emotion in his songs.
Wonderful songwriter, performer of our time. Love Jose Gonzalez and his band, Junip.
Loved this man and his music for many years, he’s the one I introduce to others as one of my favourite musicians. He’s so humble. Greetings to all listening, from Devon
Great!!
But please (!) start to write out the names of the participating musicians in the specification. They truly deserve it!!!
Agreed :)
FWIW he introduces them at 8:20. I'd type them out here but don't feel confident spelling the names.
@@sheabreauxwells7059 Bandmembers: James Mathe, Joel Wästberg, Jakob Albinsson and Andres Renteria.
@@eastman94 Rentería! Like a city in Basque Country!
Totally
Thank you NPR Music for making me discover new artists and re-discover my favourite ones.
Heading out to see him in a few minutes at the Belly-up in Solana Beach, California....the day before my birthday, and what a great birthday present to myself. GOD, I love the way this guy sings....so honest, so unpretentious...like he's having a quiet, friendly conversation with you. So glad I got turned on to his music.
So well put!
+Olias Lives I hear you, I saw him in Utrecht in December. He was amazing plus I stayed in Amsterdam and its kinda hard not to have fun there! :)
I love Jose Gonzalez so much! Great music. The new album is amazing too. Love the lyrics
What a talent, so adorable. Thanks, NPR, for all the desk concerts. Thanks for having José over.
Truly beautiful, yet unassuming. Like tiptoeing in the darkness without waking up the heavy sleepers.
Guy in the beanie needs a hug. I need a hug. I'm coming my sad sad mustachioso.
Wow I was entranced from the first moment. Thank you NPR for introducing me to yet another great artist.
Gitai Vinshtok Yea he's awesome. If you like his stuff, check out his other band "Junip". You will not be disappointed :D
Amazing when you discover something so new and refreshing
If you like him DEFINITELY listen to heartbeats and crosses. His two beat songs by far.
nick arndt Open Book and New Age are also perfect.
nick arndt heartbeats isnt even a song of him
as a child in the early 1970s, Jose Gonzalez is the folk music in my dreams of that time.
this version of "with the ink of a ghost" it's wonderful!
so good. I picture them riding away slowly....still singing softly while pedaling a hand carved bicycle built for two.
Audio engineer: Kevin Wait!
As soon as that whistling started, I had to open comments to see if everyone was talking about the magnificence of the engineering work. I'd be impressed if this was recorded in a studio, but an office?!?! Unbelievable.
Can you explain why this is awesome? I have no knowledge in sound engineering haha
So magical ✨ staring at the stars to Jose’s music, My feet have left the ground 🧚 ✨🌙
Those harmonies are just so beautiful.
This man created my passion for playing guitar and creating music that has a story and a meaning behind it. :)
this is so beautiful, It feels like i'm not even in the same world anymore.
What an wonderful artist! It really touches you deeply where it really manter...
Jose really knows how to make magic with his own unique sound and tiny desk does itself proud xxxxx
Never heard of Nick Drake?
I love his music so much! I found him through a studio concert uploaded by KEXP. Thanks to NPR. This makes me proud to say I support my local NPR station.
I found him through Pandora, when Pandora was a thing, then he went off my radar. There's a new documentary about him - Tiger in Paradise.
Bandmembers: James Mathe, Joel Wästberg, Jakob Albinsson and Andres Renteria.
Thank you!
Thanks bud !
so so glad I found this today and loving him as a new fan, sooo happy to have discovered this! WOW is an understatement. So peaceful.
dreamy in every possible way
love him, I get the same feeling listing to his music to the feeling I get with Silvio Rodríguez.
Philip Glass + Bob Dylan + Simon & Garfunkel = José Gonzalez ❤❤❤❤
Omg exactly! My HS band had a Phillip Glass show for competition one year and we made it to state with that show. Great musical score.
I feel he has also inserted a bit of Latin American Nuevo canto or what might be called protest music of the 60's-70's from Latin America. Silvio Rodriguez, Pablo Milanes and also a bit of Southern Cone. Victor Jara. There is a guy named Manuel Garcia from Chile. His look reminds me of him.
amazing control of his voice and guitar style.. such command
He's our generation's Cat.
Increíble!! Vivo en Marruecos y me casé con la mujer más hermosa de acá y le dediqué San Lucas. Ahora la cantamos juntos emocionados de verlos en tinydesk. Felicidades hermanos.
One of my favorite artist to listen to.
I know of Jose because I fell in love with his song on the Red Dead Redemption Soundtrack (So Far Away), and I feel stupid that it took me this long to further explore and appreciate his work.
If I could like this infinity I would. This man is one of the greatest musicians of our generation. Truly a remarkable song writer. His music has helped me through a lot of hard times. Thank you Mr Gonzales and band. For making such beautiful music .
Love love love!!!!!!!!!!
Que bello Jose...escucharte me recuerda que pertenezco al universo! Gracias!!
Thank you jose, for bringing warm feelings to my heart !

Brilliant! The Set is Awesome! Every Age is a Masterpiece! Beautiful Work!
Beautiful music from the earth. Thank you for the wonderful performance
Ooooooooooh those vocal harmonies ♥
I absolutely adore him 💙
Man these sound even better than the album versions! The arrengement in with the ink of a ghost is perfect
Gracias a "NPR Music" por este regalo. Uno más
I have waited so very long to see this one!! Dream come true!
José González is one of the greats :)
The best male folk harmonies since Simon and Garfunkel, maybe. Really nice ..
This is good, very good in fact, but Kings of convenience come much closer to reaching the bar set by Simon and Garfunkel. However both still fall short of the sheer genius of Simon and Garfunkel
Wooo! Jose is the BEST! One of the greats
....and harmonies guys rockin it
simplicity reaching perfection
seeing his beautiful soul in a month
Absolutely lovely!
So many musicians of this genre are so repetitive. I feel like Jose is one of the few artists who embodies a truly unique edge. Wish more indie/folk musicians were like him.
Does anybody have recommendations for similar artists?
+Tipsylou Especially with the harmony in this video I think he reminds me a lot of Simon and Garfunkel.
+Tipsylou Fink
+Tipsylou try alexi murdoch
+Tipsylou
Kings of Convience

Simply Beautiful
Thank you for this!! 👏🏻
I love it all.
A very beautiful live performance! :)
love you jose, so beautiful
One of the best live musicians in terms of how good he sounds
I love his voice
A Wonderful poet with an Orchestra of sound and gently sweet
i can't believe how beautiful this is
such a huge fan of josé gonzález !!
What are your 3 favorite songs?
THERE'S A BUNCH, but crosses, abram,& hints
Good picks. no heartbeats?
ehhh it's alright
nick arndt hearbeats was great, but his sound is so different now. I appreciate his new style. I don't think he could play it with as much soul as he once did.
Really beautiful, thank you. Backing vocals guy is the MVP.
Such talent ! Really inspiring.
I first heard him through his music with Zero 7. I saw Junip live about a year ago. His new music is wonderful. Very calm as the description mentioned, a little minimalist.
How amazing
I've been working out "With the Ink of a Ghost" on guitar for the past week and it ain't easy! Beautiful guitar player
Did you ever learn it all the way through?
@@cranberriesgirlhype8292 I did :) Or to be correct: I'm almost done.. The only part I need to practice is the bridge in between "Witness to the changing tides" and "Idle as a wave"
@@leokainzi8041 oh my goodness I would love to hear!
Nice! At first, like Simon and Garfunkle, then, early Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young! Smooth melodic entrancing
such a good concert !
