You are right… it’s working because the smoke pipe is jammed up the vents arse. Leave the smoke stick on the floor and the fan ain’t gonna work as effectively.

Video shows how air flows and it’s difficult for a ceiling fan to pull air from the corners of the room especially like in this video where a portion of the room drops back a few feet. Notice the smoke stays back there.
If he had that smoke near the floor or not directly under the fan the outcome would be totally different.
Would have been a smoke filled room and longer time for the fan to evacuate all the air

Something starts smoking and this fan immediately turns on to throw the smoke out, bringing fresh air from all directions which will make the smoking object catch fire. Wow, great way to get rid of smoke by starting fire.

I've used these signal flares before, that smoke stiiiiinks. The ceiling cavity is going to reek for a week, maybe more.
Works well if it's directly underneath it...
I don't know if this is a fair test. The smoke is blowing straight into the vent. If you look at the end once the smoke bomb has finished, there is still a lot of smoke off in the corner that isn't clearing.
It all comes down to cubic feet / cubic metres per minute. A lot of bathroom exhaust fans are just basic 4 inch / 100 mm which make a heap of noise, have small blades and take a long time to exchange the air. You can get industrial fans that will pump 17000 CFM (instead of the weak 300 CFM like most) but they are about $1200. That's the sort of thing that would suck your hat off your head or clear that fresh dump smell right out of there :D I'd install a Tim Taylor exhaust fan in the bathroom for sure if I had the chance.
I installed an extraction fan in our downstairs toilet. When choosing the fan, I saw in the store that there were numerous models at different prices. At the time it seemed logical to get the cheapest unit since a fan is just a fan, right.

its right below the fan and there is still a TON of smoke escaping.
As a vhemical engineer I can tell you there are over 5,000 substances you vould have used that would have made a volored amoke for this demonstration that would not have burned the cover to your vent or your paint on the ceiling or made your ductwork look like Tony the Tiger was chopped up and stored in it.

Anyone realize that more fan exhaust is not nessisiarily better. You can overcome the exhaust on your fuel burning appliances like Furnace and Water heater and pull CO2 back into your house.
