The real drawback of tournament is that bumper buttons wear out way faster than face buttons. Spamming cover you'll go through way more controllers.
thats why i learned how to customize and mod controllers~! literally because i play gears with LB for movement, i put mechanical switches in replace of the membrane ones, also upgraded the plastic bumpers to metal and also added negative magnetic polarity to the way the bumpers feedback works. i can honestly say i build the BEST controller for gears 5 handsdown...
kinda like the kid who did the mousewheel and keyboard keys on his controller for fortnite did!~ but instead, i upgraded the micro switches that the bumpers use to micro mechanical ones, and also swapped the face button switches from membrane to opti-mechanical razer purple ones!~
if anyone is interested in seeing the mods i did, or interested in having a controller modded dont hesitate to get ahold of me! im working on starting a business customizing all sorts of electronics for people, mainly gamers, but also PRO's who want every competitive edge they can get!
nice stuff man@@ryanstevens5395
You're the first person to cover all the control schemes with their pros and cons. I've been wanting a video like this since Gears 4. Thank you!
No problem!
I figured this would be a video that most people didn't care about...but there will always be a few that really appreciated it.
Thought this wouldnt be useful for me because I'm on k&m, but I never knew that having run and cover on the same button causes delay! Thanks for the tip
I came here to see if I could move my chainsaw button back to B.
I played gears 1, 2 and 3 to death (before an 8 year hiatus from gaming) and never even thought to see if there were alternate controller layouts you learn something new everyday. Great vid thanks.
I didn't know there was a delay by having it on the same button, but it does make sense
Holy cannoli this was exactly what I was looking for! Excellent video
finally! someone who knows about tournament default-alternate!
ive been playing with this scheme since gears 5 first came out!~
coming from gears 4 and playing tournament controls since gears 1, ive learned tournament-alt in gears4, now, i can play with tournament settings but get the pro's of using alternate controls like the slide distance boost, the freedom to play non-claw and just use LB for movement, but also the ability to map everything so i never have to take my thumbs off of the sticks, which in my opinion makes tournament defaulternate the absolute BEST scheme being i can move, control, aim, and shoot faster than someone playing reg default- defaulternate, or tournament.

Personally Tournament Alt (with Roll/Evade on A and Tac-Com on X) is my favorite. It’s very intuitive to use for standard controllers and should be the new default tbh.
O.G. CLASSIC ALT. SINCE its launch in gears 2. Only thing that changed is , i use
Paddles now.
What’s your paddle setup I have elite controller 2
@@theoneandthepoop4613 it was big paddles but now i use the middle paddles from the series 1 controller but on my series 2 controller (paddles are bigger than the small ones from the series 2)
One on the left and one on the right
Left paddle is X
right paddle is A
button remapped Lb ( malee) and B is tac com
Left stick is convex ( never thought id use that but i like it)
Right stick regular concave with a control freek alpha
Left stick set to aggressive (3 bars from max)
Right stick default
Left trigger set to least amount of pull and right trigger medium
Look sens. 29
Aim. 27
Zoom. 20
Aim acc. 10
Inner. 1
Outer 0
Single stick on
Lol so yea, i think thata about it for my set up 😁
Nice covering all the configs, but at the end of the video which one should we use/ you prefer? I saw mid way you said one you liked but kept changing into other schemes u liked but had cons. So bottom line which one
Sorry, thought I mentioned it - maybe in one of the followup videos.
I use default on an elite controller. Right paddle is 'A' and left paddle is 'B' (though not really used in Gears much).
If I didn't have an elite, I'd still be using tournament.
I personally use tournament. It just clicks with me and I love have most actions such as cover and shooting available at my fingertips. Yes the reload jam can be very annoying. I'm personally thinking about remapping b to right sick. To have my melee ready for a sticky situation over emote.
Yeah, tourney is really nice.
Im wondering if you'll run into issues with putting B on RS. For most things, I don't think it will be an issue. Executions may have a priority issue with emotes/expressions though.
@@TacCom mhm haven't thought of that but after watching the video it got me thinking there is a lot of potential with remapping different control schemes. It's like a small glimpse of key binding for m&k. So it makes me want to create different remapping methods and testing it to see what's effective or not. But thanks for opening my mind keep up the work!
Shooter intrigued me and for me seems to be like the modern day fps controls. It has potential but I'm too used to default. Muscle memory :p
Reminds me Spec Ops: The Line controls
Edit: will look into the shooter remapping
The fact that RR doesn't stop when I let go is a real killer for me.
Maybe I'd get used to it... But I'm not really willing to put in the time TBH
fumes how did it go?
Nice video. I am used to playing claw tournament alternate, I guess I will stick with it. Though it's hard to bounce fast using LB but I guess I'm just ass 😐
Using this after the E-day trailer!
Hopefully it helps!
The control schemes (and especially the settings) are actually really interesting when you deep-dive into them. It seems like such a simple/boring video topic, but this one was really enjoyable to work on.
If you play claw alternate is the best control scheme
I hate how the chainsaw is triggered with the reload. I hate this because anytime i try to chainsaw someone and they shoot me. It make me RELOAD and it kills me everytime
Nice video! Now do the pros and cons for using thumbs or claw
From what I understand, claw has lead to some hand injuries and longer-term issues.
It 100% has advantages over standard if you can get used to it...but I don't think I'd recommend it.
Paddles basically offer the same advantages of claw, but is arguably more comfortable and shouldn't lead to issues.
I dont see the difference between tournament and defaulternate?
You mean Tournament and Tournament Defaulternate?
Its basically the same change as Default to Defaulternate. Buttons don't really change, but the flow chart (order of operations) does, thus changing the input delay.
@@TacCom so tournament defaulternate is better than tournament?
Depends on your preferences.
It will slide to cover on PRESS of LB when on T Defaulternate.
If just on Tournament, it will slide to cover on RELEASE of LB.
That seems to give T Defaulternate an advantage.
On the other hand, the messed up order of operations may make you slide to cover when you're actually trying to run or roll.
So TD is "faster" (barely), but can also potentially be more inconsistant.
A lot of people use Defaulternate because of the slight speed gain....but personally, I feel it's so small and not worth the change.
I don't know what it is but I can't seem to find a scheme that fits me, because for some reason the RB button is comfortable to me for wallbouncing and running
You can go to "controller remapping" (or whatever it's called), and look at swapping some controls.
Try using "Tournament", and then swapping LB/RB or something like that.
Hi tac com i have one question i play on klassik scheme controller layout and everything is ok with that but one thing is just throw me off why if i roady run i have to use the left stick for look around and run why i cant just run with the left stick und watch normaly with the right stick so weird ?
I think one of the settings actually can swap it back.
That said, it's done for a reason. If you're holding down "a" to run, you're right thumb is preoccupied (with a traditional controller grip). This makes it so that you wouldn't be able to turn while running - hence the swap to left stick.
It becomes pretty natural after a while, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you're really struggling, try thinking of it as "left stick = movement control" and with RRing, it's just controlling your movement direction.
When I move my right anolog stick up it goes down and same as the other way I don’t know how to change it
Y axis inversion is on probably
are u able to switch camera angles while aiming down sites in gears 5? i remmbr old gears u could be behind cover aim down and switch it from left n right by pressing the joystick in.. did they taKe that out ?
Gears has never allowed you to switch shoulder like that.
The only "shoulder swap" thing in Gears (any Gears) is:
- When aiming, you always aim over the right shoulder
- When in cover, you aim over the right shoulder
- If you go all the way to the left, and aim around a wall, it aims over the left shoulder
---- this is the only time it aims over the left
---- if you pull off of the wall while you're still ADS, you'll stay on the left shoulder
------- if you left go of ADS though, you'll switch back to right
@@TacCom o yea i think ur right bro thats what i meant lol can u still do that in gears 5?
Yup
What is your control scheme?
Default, but with "A" mapped to my right paddle on my elite controller and "B" mapped to the left.
Before having a controller with paddles, I used tournament.
I play on classic alt with LB as my cover and A as my tac com etc..... I played gow4 this way too and it felt so comfortable to me but it seems the wall bouncing in gears 5 with as close as controls as I think I can get it just doesn’t work, it’s like the LB cover button doesn’t let you take cover all the time, mid fight I’ll be looking at a wall I wanna slide to and pressing LB and it just doesn’t take cover it’s like there is a cover delay or something, it doesn’t happen all the time but it seems to happen at the worst times, also makes triangle bounces not work so much, idk maybe it’s just me but if someone can please explain it to me that would be great, you did an amazing video I just didn’t find my problem in it, please help with this
I'm wondering if your LB is dying and not registering properly?
Other than that, I'm not really sure.
Of you're on classic Alt (even if remapped), there shouldn't be any delay for the cover command.
@@TacCom I thought it was that too, went out and bought a new controller and it still seemed to do it, I’ve had people tell me I’ve mistimed by bounce but i will be looking directly at a wall and it still won’t register, I appreciate you responding back!
I just started playing gears 5 on PC. I feel much more comfortable on keyboard & mouse. Am I at a disadvantage because of controller auto aim? My friend says I am
Controller had elements of aim assist (different amounts in different modes). In general, aim assist is designed to make the controller players closer to that of PC players. Mouse will still win though.
Mouse is objectively more accurate than gamepad... So aiming will be more accurate with mouse.
Controller is objectively more accurate than keyboard, some movement will be more accurate with a controller.
At the end of the day, play on what you find to be most comfortable, and you won't notice any significant advantage/disadvantage. The only exception to this is in precision shots (like sniper), you'll find that a mouse player can easily beat out a controller player.
@@TacCom Another option is having the controller in left hand for movement alternative to wasd, and mouse in right hand for aim. It may feel clunky to hold a controller with one hand tho. I think an ideal setup would be a wii nunchuck or a playstation move analog controller + mouse.
If I were to seriously look at PC gaming, I'd probabaly invest in a Razpr Tartarus or something similar.
Mouse on right hand. Joystick and buttons on left hand.
Xbox elite v2 controller or nothing
I've changed to classic alt ive managed to change x to a but it won't let me change y to x? Wtf?
Are you using the in-game settings or the "accessories app"?
Seems odd that it wouldn't let you change.
Does your x->a mapping work properly?
Yes its let me changed x to a but not y to x now I have to pick up weapons with y and revive with y which is slow it slows me down, it has let me change x to a which obviously is much better now im on classic alt when I wall jump its quicker as it functions on the press of a rather than the realase also sprint and wall jump all on a which is great it just will not let me change y to x so damm annoying am I doing it wrong ive never remapped buttons before so not sure ? Ty for your reply
I use tournament defaulternate
Update:Defaluternate on paddles rn
The real drawback is that there is no legacy either.
O.G. CLASSIC ALT. SINCE its launch in gears 2. Only thing that changed is , i use
Paddles now.
