  • In this week’s episode, we go cold water swimming. Cold water swimming has become a weekly routine for both Karam and I throughout the winter. We’ve fallen in love with the amazing ice dipping community as well as the feeling of complete bliss afterwards. These freezing Sunday mornings have increased our productivity, tolerance to the cold and our willingness to seek discomfort.
    Breathing Method: The WimHof Method.

    Welcome to our Berlin series, where we show you our life in this city. Meet our friends, our favourite places to hang (and walk the dog!), the best places to buy Brotchen, and pretty much anything else we find interesting. This is not a food or travel show, but rather a people show, because after all what is Berlin if not its fucking cool people.
    We want to point out we’re not speaking for everyone in Berlin, and our experience is definitely an expat view. But still, here we are, having fun and hopefully entertaining you in the process!
    Enjoy! And don’t forget to subscribe for more Berlin and slow travel adventures :)

    we live on our sailboat in Canada and it's been my goal to get used to swimming all year round, kind of as a survival tehcnique. I started swimming in the very cold water this year and, as someone who is cold all the time, it has been life changing. I'm just trying to come up with the courage to continue it when there isn't sunshine! It's pretty inspirational to see you guys swimming when its below zero.

      That's so cool! Your lives sound like a dream :) yeah I actually quite enjoy it a lot more when it's even colder outside. You feel more challenged and feel better about yourself after completing it!

    I love doing this exercise because it automatically forces you to get out of your comfort zone. Like El said, there’s nothing like it. A complete reset. Great video yaaalll n kisses to Tobi

    This is amazing! I would really want to do this. Ever since I first learned about this through your Instagram stories, I am hooked. And I want to do this because it just seems very uncomfortable! I felt comfortable watching it (enjoyed it just as much). I have always been very conscious about my body like million other folks around the world and the thought of letting yourself feel so vulnerable is scary. Love the videos you guys create! Cheers.

      @Karamintheworld  Před 3 lety

      Hi Manish, glad you liked the video! Letting go of that self-consciousness is super hard and something we both really struggled with. The first few swims we always went into the water with our swimsuits while everyone else got naked. And then after a while we just got so used to seeing other people's bodies in this normal lense that we decided to take the plunge hehe

    Hey guys..another great vid. @4:36, as Karam is wading out, there was an accompanying noise??? So glad to realise it was just a swan and not his fear of the cold 🤭🤭. Any more canoe adventures planned, or perhaps a paddleboard camping trip? Anyway, looking forward to your next vid. X

      @Karamintheworld  Před 3 lety

      Yeah it was that Swan which actually was a really fun addition to our cold water dip that Sunday. it somehow made it more wholesome haha
      No paddling adventures yet, but We're working on editing the Vietnam bicycle tour for the next video and also Karam is going to Slovenia at the end of the month for another bike tour that will be also shown on here eventually :)

    I love seeking discomfort, but I have to admit that this cold water thing just isn't for me. My nice hot steamy shower is pure bliss during cold and miserable winter days haha. But I do understand what it does and how life-changing it can be for many. Great videos, as always!

      @Karamintheworld  Před 3 lety

      Thank you Tania! I'm a big fan of showers too so I can really relate haha. I honestly never thought I could get into cold water swimming but having other people there to push you along the way definitely helps lol. Elena xxxx

    It just hurts when people do not get the breathing thing correct or the right way. Like so many things related to concentrations in the blood serum, this too does not reflect to the physiological phenomena, chemistry nor biomechanics of the body at site of function as it is with these non-Newtonial fluids. So there is a persisting miss-conception of oxygens and carbons role and their regulation throghout our body at any given time. Wim certainly has not helped with undoing of confusion. Why does it work? Well it is like if you away yourself from a crappy diet, you seem to have a winner diet regardless where you ween towards. Stop breathing in a crappy way and you see progress. Is it the best way? Hell no. Go and experiment with tempo, volyme, assymmetry, retention, pressure frequency and stuff. You will be your own master of air.
    Not that any of this really matters. You do what is said and you forget it is cold. You could have done it in any way. Just believe in it, and it will work just fine. But then if you want to master the heat production and switch it on in 6 seconds when you fall off a boat, that matters. Next time just empty the lungs first thing and keep them empty until you start feeling utter death. One time does the trick. Then keep lungs maximally only 1/4th of total its total volume and exhale in that fashion for 10min. This is emptying into a vacuum slowly 6-7 secons and letting the lung get air without intentionally inhaling. Inhale cycle takes only 1 second. Repeat thei for 10 rounds and you have a 10 min timer. That is 10min in water and you will be hot inside the torso when you want to quit. If you keep elbows to the side of the chest and palms deep in the inner thighs and buttox, you will save even more heat. Do not move, talk or force it, but keep the best happy thoughts in your mind to keep the seratonin driving any cortisol stress hormones away. Serotonin, carbondioxide and heat happen in unison.
    It is easy to do the citizen scientist research on the web. Find out yourself why breathing heavily and fast rises the oxygen into the blood and thus deprives the body from it. You end up in hypo-oxygen state. Hyper (a lot) ventilate (exchange gasous compounds) leads to Hypoxia. The tingling sensation is due to carbon-di-oxide in brain and muscle. Vasoconstriction can be felt as is lowering of heart beat. Less ATP molecules are made and more heat resulting from the uncoupling of energy in the brown adipose tissue fat cell mitochondria. By doing a lot of cold exporsure one adusts the heat shock proteins HSP and by homeostasis and hormesis the body learns to optimise oxygen and carbon in every cell except the red blood cell. Its job is to be the courier, not the thief of exchangeable gas molecules. Make andy sense? Science is awesome, so are YOU!
