  • How to visit the Great Wall of China using the S2 train from Beijing to Badaling for $2 each way, showing the train, the journey and the Great Wall. For Beijing to Badaling train schedules, fares, how to buy tickets see www.seat61.com/places-of-inte...
This was a great day out from Beijing - the train ride to Badaling on a Chinese train over this historic railway was as much part of the experience as visiting the Great Wall itself. Going by train allows much more freedom than going on a bus tour with fixed times.

Thinking of taking a tour from Beijing to the Great Wall? I took a tour the first time as it seemed the easiest option, but we were given barely half an hour at the actual Great Wall, and far too much time at retail outlets! It's far better to go independently, simply use your Beijing metro smartcard to hop on the S2 local train from Beijing to Badaling. Come back when you want! It's all explained at www.seat61.com/places-of-interest/by-train-to-the-great-wall-of-china.htm

In 2020 you should be able to take the high-speed train directly to Great Wall in just 20 minutes!

A great video but unfortunately it will be outdated soon. Beijing North Railway Station, the original terminus of the S2 line, will complete renovations in late 2019. Thus travel to Huoying station will not be needed, but Xizhimen metro station. Also a new high speed line is under construction and a separate new underground modern station is being built at Badaling. All in time for hosting the Winter Olympics, deep beneath the Great Wall and bypassing the switchback.

@@Sadie8Sadie It's already open to the public. The Beijing-Zhangjiakou line just opened in late December 2019. It's 30 minutes from Beijing North to Badaling Great Wall, but it's quite a bit more expensive than $2. The new high speed line is around $4 from Beijing North to Badaling.

If you want to see the sights, you can still go to Huoying/Huangtudian to take the S2. It's still operating. It's cheaper too.

Very nice video! I didn’t realize you can use the Beijing Metro Card. I thought you needed a special ticket. I tried this once and they ticket office told me that all the trains were sold out already for the day. It was 8am and trains were sold out. This was a few years ago.
I took the subway 1 stop and took a bus. I think I got off the bus too soon and saw the Beijing Safari World which is right next to the Great Wall. I spent the day there instead.

I love the video. I'm a huge fan of trains and loved to ride trains when I was a kid. Sometimes I would ask my dad to take me on a train ride for one stop just to feel the train tremble. In China, and probably most Asian areas, trains are cheap. When I visited Europe, I found trains really expensive even if you book in advance compared to buses and cheap flights like Ryanair. Tough choice to make.
