I am a CZcams junkie and have completed hundreds of projects after having watched thousands if not tens of thousands of videos posted by numerous CZcamsrs but I have never, ever seen anything like what you have offered here. You are an amazingly organized soul and your willingness to share that is incredibly generous!! You deserve a standing ovation. I had no idea that chimes were so complicated. I thought(incorrectly) that you could just hang tubes and call it good! This is possibly the most detailed tutorial in any subject I have ever watched.

I was going to refurbish (for sentimental reasons) a set of copper chimes my late father made. They sounded good but were primitive to be sure. Now, after watching your video, and appreciating all the technical engineering you contributed to it, I've decided to adapt his materials and upgrade the design following your plans and suggestions. A most fitting way to honor my Dad on this Memorial Day; he was a two-year combat vet of WWII. Bless them all!

My Dad was also in WWII but was in the South Pacific .

Love the detail. For center hung chimes, I use the wire part from paper binder clips (you get two from each clip and they come in different sizes). Tie the support string to it, squeeze together and push into the pipe. push it down and rotate until the ends pop into the two drilled holes. It's nice because if for some reason you need to re-hang the chime, the ends just push back in and you can remove and redo it.

I didn’t make it very far before the first issue. I will be making a 44” copper tube type L 1.5” diameter in the scale of C. I see you have listed the notes for the Corinthian in C @ C,D,E,G,A and C. Using your diy calculator for my given tube size it shows if I started at C3 the tube length would be
45 3/4” do I then go down to D in the same octave meaning D would be a length of 43 3/16”?
Would that mean the last C in the scale would be a C4?
@@simplytodd4155 yes, you have it exactly correct. Occasionally a chime set will bridge between two octaves.

Thank you so much. Now I am kicking myself for giving away old copper pipe from the bathroom renovation. I just hope I have enough left out the back shed to have a go at making myself a chime, and that I can achieve something even a little close to this standard. My siblings used to call me a daddy's girl as a kid, and I have definitely turned into my father. If he were alive now and saw this type of demonstration on CZcams he would be amazed and impresed, as I am now. This quality demonstration is most inspiring!

Amazing! I guess I was expecting a more 'how'd ya do that?' video but found myself thoroughly intrigued by the technical aspects that you have already calculated and made easily available (bless you!) so even I can make a tuned chime set.
This means there *is* a pleasant, profound way to utterly destroy the incessant clinkety clanking sounds of the neighbors' tacky chimes of glass (for crying out loud!), ceramics, forks n spoons = teeth-gritting shudders 24/7. Bwah ha ha ha!!

This is a fantastic video. Extremely thorough.
I have used your predetermined charts for four chime sets. The special advice about support disks and strikers is valuable. I have used salvaged material, mostly EMT tubing. All chime sets have worked nicely. Currently embarked on a set in conjunction with my granddaughter.
Now that was a very thoughtful instruction. You anticipated all my questions and left a good trail of bread crumbs. I’m definitely going to give this a good ‘ole try this summer. Thanks very much.

Drilling them in the sweet spot will make them sustain longer. And the type if string type and length is also important.

Excellent video! I'm looking to make my own doorbell chime, that can also chime on the hour using some solenoids for striking and an arduino to drive it. Love how you get into the science of how to cut the tube to the right length to tune it, and what the different types of metal sound like. Really appreciate that you took the time to make this great video.

I have a brand called Jacob's Ladder that my mom bought in old Sacramento in about the mid-'70s, maybe; 1 1/2-2 feet tall overall. Has a sustained and sweet sound. They don't do the larger ones anymore. So happy I found your video what a treasure. Like an answer to a with I made.

Thank you, Mr. Hite for this most excellent tut on making wind chimes. I have been wanting a "bassy" wind chime (similar to church bells) for some time but they usually run $200 and up. A bit steep for a yard decoration if you ask me. I have always known I could make a good one but did not have the design details. You have provided it. Thank you.

You said it "dude"... These larger bassy windchimes (especially if tuned) go for $600 and up... You make and sale enough of these beauties , you've made ur house payment. Problem now days seems like this younger generation doesn't want to work for their money. Such a shame if you ask me. This man has done all the musical, chemistry, metallurgy, and probably some biology right here for anyone to use !

I just finished cutting my 1" (type "L") copper pipe for the C4 version of the C9 chord. This is such a great resource Lee. Many thanks to you for all the hard work and for your kindness in sharing this with everyone. Once I'm done with the C9 chimes, I plan to try your calculator on some Solfeggio frequencies. This is a lot of fun and even may end up producing some unique Christmas presents for a few family members. You have surely spread a lot of joy to a lot of people...very nice indeed!
Hello Freddy... I want to build some chimes to play along other instruments. I tried to determine the note of the chimes on the video, but... to me, at least, they sound like F#4, F4, F4, F#4, and F4. Am I missing something? have you compared your C4 to other instruments?
