Friend, I am a songwriter. I really enjoy hearing you share your stories. Thanks for being on CZcams. You're genuine. And that is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!đ
Just subscribed. I'm 55 and trying to play guitar is the most fun I have ever had. I spent many years in the military before getting hurt, but they try to take care of me. I went on to get my Ph.D. and will retire again in two years from teaching at a large college. I don't have any friends to play music with, but man that would be fun.
I applaud you for finding your way into
Music. It is greatly therapeutic. Best to you on your journey.
Florida is a great music destination! You will drop right in. âOne Door Closes Another Opensâ and itâs always a better door.
đ
I wish you all the very best Brad! I pray God blesses you abundantly! đđ»đ„â€ïž
Mark, may the blessings return back to you! Thank you so much!
It is Nashville ptsd man ! Took a while for it to leave my spirit! The music never leaves our spirit! We keep playing! Youâre awesome man ! Keep in touch ! Meow
You are the man!
Best of luck, you will find your musical footing in FLA. Players gotta playđ¶đ€
Thank you!
You donât always get what u want but if you try sometimes u get what u needđžđ Cheers đ»
Love the Stones.
72 years old here and just found your channel. Thanks for keeping it real. I was introduced to music by the British invasion which took me back to the originators of that music- the old black guys the music industry abused. They gave their songs and music to white artists and bleached it considerably to make a market and paid those artists pennies. However they could not replicate the soul of the music because they never lived it. It all goes full circles my friend. Today I gig if I like the songs, otherwise no. I'm not going to rattle off chords and notes just to play a song for any price. I was in a band here for 30+ years but as I grew I knew it was time to go. Playing songs is one thing but unless you can relate to the song, lived it, the song never becomes music. If one is going to cover Old Time Rock and Roll, one had better damn sure lived it or it is just a soulless song. Doors always open when others are closed and I am sure that will happen for you. Be it Nashville or here in Florida, you'll encounter egos bigger than life, like the entitled kid you talked about. Rest assured there are still musicians who play from a place of life, who can put the emotion in the song instead of just lifeless performance. And yes AI will be responsible for new hits unfortunately and seems to be the new wave. Short mindless songs stolen from music already done years ago. Yeah, I am rambling I know. Keep it alive and welcome to Florida. Looking forward to hearing from you again in your channel. Thanks Brad.
What a great response. Yes you have to believe the song and you have to have lived it. So true. I thank you for the well wishes and best to you my friend.
Birds chirping after the 19:00 mark while talking about a mellower life and "the back nine" is definitely a sign from above... a good sign that you are on the right path. Never give up and keep moving forward... wherever that may be!

A very touching video. We will miss you all greatly. Thanks for being there for Michael and I. Looking forward to the Badd Brad tales from FL.
You guys are the best. We will miss you but hoping to see you in Fla. Wish you guys the best!
Iâm so glad I found your videos. Much respect! I watched you from the wings at a festival with Trick Pony long ago. You burned it down that day! All the best in FL.
Man thanks so much. Touring with those guys was a fun time. I imagine I had my 4-12 cab and a Hughes and Kettner puretone head back then. Iâll have to explore more of those days here. Thank you!
The only constant in life is change. Best of luck with the move and the future.
Thank you!
Good luck to you and your family Brad !
Iâm a self employed trucker (local) and a hobby guitarist some people I know say I missed my calling that Iâm such a good player, but I just laugh and say thereâs 10 million better than me !
I enjoy your stories be safe and hear from you soon !!
Thanks so much for what you do. Truckers are so important to this country. Best to you. More to come
When I nearly packed up my drums and moved there, in like 1989, someone told me: There are 100 guys that move to Nashville every day. And there are 100 that pack up and leave evety day. That reality helped me make a better decision and life choice. Some times I regret not taking the risk, and then I look at what I now have and the amazing trip it has been. No regrets in the end and playing better than ever. Things work out.
Either way things do work out.
Hey brother, I just found your channel and itâs really great! I find it very interesting to hear your stories and get some insight and wisdom from the things you talk about. Im a Veteran and started playing the guitar five years ago to help me deal with and get through the tough times from the war. The guitar and music saved my life. Anyway, I wish you all the best in Florida. Iâm actually in Florida as well. I moved here three years ago. Itâs great here, but man is it hot in the summer! All the best to you and your family. âïž
Man music is great therapy! Iâm glad to hear that. Best to you in Florida!
Brad...just such an interesting perspective....proud of you..ive played in Nashville...played the Opry toured 27 countries blah blah blah...played clubs 45 years ...from San Diego...never wanted to dive in that scene....again proud of you sir ...keep videoin I'm following you...
Thank you so much!
Something you said reminded me of the old Cyndi Lauper song, "Money Changes Everything."
"we think we know what we're doing
but we don't pull the strings
its all in the past now
money changes everything"
Best of good fortune to you.
Thatâs very fitting. Best to you.
Lots of reflection Brad. Appreciate this conversation like morning cup of coffee. I drew similarities of my own retirement from firefighting three years ago and yours from the Nashville gig grind, right diwn to the time frames. If these stories are shared outside our age group (Gen Xrs/Boomers), to others it all sounds like old men yelling at clouds, but as you drive to your new home in Florida, keep your eyes ahead, crank up or turn down the yacht rock to your liking, know that you did far more than most who ever picked up a guitar in the rest of the country, building a family and life beyond your chosen career. Congratulations on your success beyond the music. God is gracious indeed!
Bless you! Much appreciated. Thanks so much!
YaY... I can't wait to hear your stories!!!!
More on the way!

Wishing you the best on your new adventure! You should create a road series as you drive to sunny Florida! Rock on brother!
I just may do that.
Rise like a Phoenix in Florida. Time to blaze a new trail. The world has changed but you tasted some of the best times in Nashville before it went sour...and lived to tell the tale. Kick it!
You got that right! Best to you!
Best luck writing the new chapter in FL Brad. As always great content!

Just subscribed to your channel after seeing this post and I thought I'd come along for the ride. So, full steam ahead to Florida and better days ahead. Safe travels Brad and good luck from Northern Ireland.
Man i absolutely love being able to reach places Iâve never been able to go. Maybe one day I can get to see the Emerald Isle.
Brad, enjoying your videos and watch your subscriber count jump daily. I'm 49 and been playing guitar since I was a kid. Always practiced and played in bands but never committed to be a real musician. About 7 ago, I committed to playing as professionally as I can and now play out around Portland all the time. Jazz music. Just gonna keep going as long as I can and getting better. Really like listening your thoughts on the industry after a life long career.
Man thank you so much. I want to get my jazz chops up if I can find the time. Best to you!
Nice jacket ! Your playing is stellar !
Thank you kindly!
Eager to hear more of your stories. I appreciate your frankness. Best wishes.
Thanks so much!
Brad, thank you for making this video so quickly after your last gig in Nashville last night. Iâm new to your channel (a month ago) and so appreciating your thoughts and insights about being a full time, professional musician and guitar player. I really like your videos. I tried all of this when I was younger, Iâm a really good bass player, but ultimately, I needed money and found other ways to make a living. So your experience and great stories really resonate with me.
Maybe you will take a break from all the live music gigs for a while, but something tells me you are not finished, by any means. You never know what great new unique opportunities will come up in Florida. But glad you are finishing up the Nashville chapter. You did it, you conquered it, now on to new, better things.
Keep smiling brother. Even better things are coming...
Man thanks for being a blast of sunshine. Itâs always needed. đ

I just found ur channel! Really wish I could have had a beer and a chat with you before you left. 5 or 6 years into being a professional engineer I realized I didnt want to end up like the other people in the industry that had been there 20 years prior to me. It didnt look great at all. I found another profession to jump into in parallel with engineering because It never was never going to be enough to retire on. Good luck in your next chapter, sir!
aww man. Thank you. I appreciate you watching!
Best of luck Brad! Thanks for the stories. Keep on going.
Thanks! Will do!
Found your channel awhile ago and like your stuff. Nashville 1985 played many gigs and then left to bigger things. Went back to see a town I didn't know. The money for regular Joes playing bars is gone. Now begging for tips and no real original music I could find in 2023. Sad to see all the old haunts gone and they even tried to get rid of the record shop but I heard the family is involved to keep it. I don't know...maybe something better will be coming to Nashville. Not sure. Damn that was a crazy town man. Peace âïž I'll keep checking in on ya. Later brother.
Thank you!
God bless you and your family. I hope Florida is exactly what youâre looking for. Have fun! đ

Good luck in Florida. I hope you find a sense of peace and contentment with whatever you are doing. BTW, as a 60+ year resident of FL your mornings on the porch are now gonna be Dec-April if you're luckyđ. Speaking for myself, heat and humidity get worse the older and fatter I get. Maybe I'll see you somewhere and I can say Hi. Be well sir.
Thanks so much! Yes maybe I will see you around.
Wishing you all the best in your move Brad. I went through the same exact thing 2 years ago and it was the best decision Iâve made in a long time. I met my Australian wife while on a gig at The Stage and came here to see the country in 2022. I ended up loving it here and packed everything into a shipping container and made the move in November. I was burnt out on all of the changes and politics that you have discussed in this series. I am so much happier these days. Nashville PTSD is definitely real. FYI.. I used to wait on you at the Belle Meade UPS store when I first moved to town back in 2011. We talked guitars and gigs from time to time. Marshall, the owner was a character for sure. Safe travels brother.
Wow yes brother I remember you! We had some good chats. That is such a great story man! Wow. How is old Marshall doing? He was such a hoot. Thanks so much. Thanks for reconnecting.

This is a bizarre time we are in. From my experience I am keeping my circle of people very small for now. This is a terrible time to relocate. The rental/ land and housing market is insane. I wanted to relocate this last spring. Delaying it for a year. Something huge is going on behind public view I think. Banks all over are going insolvent. I wish you the best with relocating to Florida.

Great story telling... on that rap thing, yea, I got into in the early 90's, and it really did take off. Back then I played bass in a Steely Dan/Chicago/Tower of Power cover band, and to make ends meet, I did hip hop stuff at home with a small studio, and even got into the sample audio CD thing, used to advertise in Keyboard mag. Fun times... got out of the music biz age 35, no regrets, but it was fun while it lasted.
I hear you!

Thanks so much. Always great to hear from the land down under.
I looked at moving to Nashville a couple of years back and ended up back in Austin after a decade outside of Texas. The last time I was in Nashville in 2018 , it wasn't the same small friendly town I had visited many years prior.
Although I'm not a pro musician , I am a life long musician. And I used to play periodically in Austin. But just like Nashville, money has changed the fabric of this town. There is still a vibrant music scene , but all of the old charm has been rung out of Austin. And there really is no pay for most musicians here.
It's hard to accept that the old charming 'big small towns' from the 90s and early 2000s will only live on in our memories.
Good luck in Florida !
Yes things have changed so much and not for the better. Thank you! Hopeful for the future.
Sunset strip/Laurel cayon experience would be interesting.
There will be lots of stories from those days. Stay Tuned. Itâs all stream of consciousness so just a matter of when it comes out.
Good luck with your move and whatever the future holds for you and your family. I hope you find a thriving music scene once you're settled. Sadly, I think you're right about AI squeezing real writers and musicians out of a lot of the mainstream music business.
Thank you! Time will tell.
Best of luck in Florida. I got a place in Panama City Beach and love visiting there. Hope you get back playing soon! Iâve had my sanity breaks from time to time but Iâm always drawn back into it.
That's awesome. Yeah I'm due for a sanity break.
I just watched this again. It just struck me. Itâs interesting because nobody ever talks about this shit. Itâs like being the fly on the wall listening to the meeting behind closed doors.

Whenever you're ready to get back on the horse, there are a lot of killer players in FL and GA. I stumbled across your vids and suddenly don't feel like a lone soldier anymore. I'm 55 and started grinding in clubs at 14. I get it my brother. I think one of the hardest things is seeing all the people I've played with passing away one by one. We are the survivors it would seem, naysayers from the old days are still amazed that I've made it this far. I can't wait to see what you wind up playing in Florida. I was the rock half of the guitar team doing modern country. Played from Chicago to Panama City and all points East doing everything from hardcore punk to arena rock to classic rock to country. Some people play for a while for kicks, but they fade pretty quickly. Most will never understand the work ethic and the insight that a lifelong road dog has. They have no experience in their lives to even begin to relate to you. Hard? Very....but we plow on. Be safe on the road..... Mike
Yes indeed! Thank you!
Not sure where in FL you are moving too.....but seems like everyone and their brother moved to FL in the last 5 years or so. FL used to be a cheap state.....no longer. Still very nice, but prices are insane.
I live in a tourist town, and during the season, national touring acts (mostly tributes) command a hefty premium for seats, so some decent money can be made playing if you want to keep doing it. Best of luck to you. Welcome to FL!
Thank you! Yes seems like there is alot of music there. We shall see.
DOOD! been waiting on this vid. Weird how I just stumble on you. Glad you are making a change of scenery. I was honestly thinking about moving back up there, going through nostalgia, and I don't think it is a coincidence that I ran back across you. When I left in 96, it was the best decision I made. I had to get away from the drama. I missed the friendships, but hated the music city nightmare of chasing the dream. I made more money in a smaller town, but it was the same nightmare. Club owners are terrible. I am happy you moving on!
Thanks bro. Best to you!
Sorry to find out on here they you're moving to FL man. You deserve time with your awesome family as you're blessed beyond most I've known in our industry. Nashville stole my sanity and s drunk driver here stole my life so I'm blessed to call you my friend and to have known you brother.
Bless you brother. Life is a tough ride. I wish you the best always.
I'm halfway through the video and bro, I feel where you are coming from.
I started out doing the band thing. By my second band I had already experienced so much bad that I knew I couldn't work for anyone else and needed to start my own and did.
I found a group of guys that were on board with my mission and vision and off we went.
As time goes on the orbiters around your players enter and leave, hindering and helping the band in different ways but as long as there remains a clear leader and a clear goal everyone is working towards then it works.
It seems every band is plagued with one position they have rotation in, ours was guitar. It was a tough position because the guitarist bounced back and forth between chords and leads and often times in two guitar songs.
We were a cover band that also did some originals, our focus was to play the songs that were current on the radio to the best of our ability without a good enough mentality, and to reach A room status where we could get the most pay we could.
We got there after a LOT of very hard work, but as we reached the top people started wanting something different out of the band. The problem for me was the players I needed had to be driven and because they were driven they had high paying day jobs and didnt need the money from playing music. When you reach top pay you dont retain it without playing often and you dont turn down great paying gigs. They wanted the high pay in the A rooms, but wanted to only accept the gigs that fit around their personal lives, playing A rooms comes with adding another position to the band (an agent that has contract with the A rooms), and the band couldnt accept that.
After 12 years of hard work and sacrifice I left my own band and went solo, my soul was in a much better place but I was completely alone for the rest of my career. People come for the bass and drums because they can dance, solo artist? not so much.
Man I feel this message so deep. It's tough to get everybody on the same page, damn near impossible. Unless you go solo.
@@badbrad indeed brother indeed. I know you will create success in whatever comes next, people like us create what we want we don't wait for it to happen. You will go through a lot of emotions after retiring and what you want next will be clearer than it ever has been. @@BillyBlaze7 Thank you brother!
Brother I understand the stress from the years of touring . When i bought this land in south Tennessee it was 2013 and i just wanted to take some time to recharge and so that has been over 10 years ago . My neighbor is Darryl Worley dowh here and he still tours some so i have musicians that i still get together with from time to time but we go down to muscle shoals usually to record . I avoid Nashville and all big cities these days . My best wishes to you and i dont think youll regret getting out of the grind of Nashville. Look forward to your continued videos once you get settled in at your new location. Now youâll have cool stories from LA, stories from Nashville, and now stories from Florida coming up. And yeah, AI is seriously taking over. I hear every Nashville writing session has a chat gpt on the side for the heavy lifting then the songwriters just finish off the last 10-20%. And I really resonate with the frustration. I live 2 hours outside of LA and thatâs the sweet spot since itâs not worth it being caught up in that rat race. Lastly, just block the trolls. Zero tolerance. Stupid comment? Blocked. Disrespectful? Blocked. Thatâll weed out all the people who are just trying to get attention they donât get at home.
Sage advice! I need to do that more. Pretty soon those label execs will realize the songwriters arenât needed.

A return to our 'wanton, wild, booming-years....in a former-industry; We are longing to return ( unfortunately...it's not real; we 'can't) to previous decades that were indeed, better. those wonderful halcyon days....the 'salad days, as Cage quipped, in 'Raising Arizona) That we had enjoyed and lived thru....those incredible bountiful 'times, things, and places and events..... sadly, in a galaxy now far, far away. 2. If your 50 or over in this business.... with our age, comes.... sadly... that 'place' we all get to....where....we simply 'long....for things behind us. ( The aforementioned) We want...."how it was'. And.... that's nearly impossible. We are in Times now....that are just so starkly different....than say.... 1975. or '85. or...even '95. We've lived thru, the 'Best' of this Business. And now, as Brad is lamenting and forced to face..... Those days are very quite likely............. Gone. Brad, i wish you well. I 'too....have had a dream to get out of Reno. It's a Shell...of it's former self. There's nothing left. I am a drummer and singer, and enjoyed 3 or 4 wonderful decades of 'Great Times and Booming Years....for Gigs. It's all gone. and with it....our old 'Record Industry Model'. I think as we age now..... it's sort of a natural process...to just.........get tired. and start realizing.....we're on the back 40....with that whole dream. Pretty sure i'm Retired. did my last ( horrible) gig....late Dec '23. I'm moving on in Life, but.... as you say, despite missing just 'certain' aspects...of the Road life, and being in a working environment.....there is a litany of 'other' things about all that......I'm not going to Miss. Good luck to you in your Move. At best....i'll be seeking to follow in your footsteps....and pick a new 'Pleasantville for myself....and leave this Town.... where there is just Zero Good Music Scene anymore. I"m thinking New Mexico or Utah. I wish to Slow down now....
Brother I hear you loud and clear. Read every word and felt it. Yeah the Good Old Days are in the rear view mirror. But I still feel the joy when I pick up my guitar. I'm thankfull for that. I appreciate you finding the channel and hope to hear from you again. Best to you.
@@badbrad - Hoping Florida and this change for you, treats you well. Sometimes....just 'shifting out' of a previous, worn-out' pattern or mode.... in and of itself.... brings the needed change we are looking for. Things do indeed have to keep moving forward. I'll stay tuned man. Best of Luck and good fortune Brad!
@@drumdude46 I think your right. Thank you!
The hardest truth to tell is the truth we tell ourselves. Thatâs why this world is so screwed up right now.
Youâre an honest dude⊠and a true musician. I know youâre more than that, a husband,.. a father,..
but if thatâs all you ever were,.. itâs a lot. Believe me,..
Looking forward to hearing those stories about a life well lived.
Thank you. People come here for the hard truth's but I'm still very lucky.
Get one of those powerful little fans next to your pedal board. Makes your hair look good too. You have a family and a house equity from being a guitar player? You won!
I hit the lottery.
That's always the thing. People say, "Oh, this is the it place to be". Then lots of people go there and of course it changes because a lot more people are there.
It happens
I am an old man and you remind me of a saying someone once said to me. Be careful where you lean your ladder to climb your life on. When you get there it might not be where you want things to be. I too am a guitar picker and I understand much, not all, of what you are saying. Take care brother. Will catch up with you.
Thank you! đ Best to you! Take care.
Maybe your next chapter will be youtubing, your a awsome story teller and I'm sure there are hundreds of thousands of ppl who would appreciate your story telling! Good luck on your next chapter.
That's kinda where I'm headed.
Jillian's Law goes into effect Monday, July 1st so leaving Tennessee was a great idea.
Wasnât familiar with it was already mentally checked out .
Great honest insight about the Nash, thanks for letting get a peek under the hood of the music machine. I just joined a country band as their lead guitar player. We just played a pretty good size gig w some "industry people" in the crowd. We were told we didn't have enuff twang and the singer would be better off w out the band. Well, this ain't ya grandad's chicken pickin Country! Anyway, enjoy ur next venture!
I wonder who would say that.
Thanks to you! "All things must pass"...George took up gardening.
George was so great.
@@badbrad you have accomplished more than most. Play the changes.
Iâm still trying to master the 2-5-1
@@badbrad we are all in the same boat. Enjoy the trip.
