Nice to see somewhat historically accurate fighting where a sword doesn't cut through metal like butter but usually glances off.
The armours are 100% fantasy. Thy look great though .
@@javier6926 100% fantasy?
Only in the sense that they didn't exist until 800 years after this movie takes place.
Brenda Forster yes , I know that plate armour is a real thing , however the shape , design of the armours looks a bit unrealistic. Just my opinion.
@@javier6926 Fair enough.
They might be a bit flashy, but they do have real life counterparts.
@@javier6926 Arthur's yes. But Lancelots armor as far as size and general shape is concerned is 99.99% perfect
Holy crap. Their armor actually works.
To be fair, in some scenes, Excalibur does cut through their armor like a lightsaber, but that is in keeping with its lore.

Out of all the movies made about King Arthur this is the best one in my opinion. Even the music is spectacular
Totally agree.
I saw this movie with my father in the movie theater in Westwood Village when it first came out. That was over 40 years ago

1:11 “I offer you another lance.” Always wondered how Lancelot got his name.
Lol dad joke 👍
Brilliant. His heir is Books a Million.
It is said that when he met the lady Guinevere he did lance a lot.
@@DrachenhannesLancelot is a fake character. The story of Arthur was popular enough during the Hundred Years’ War that it made its way into enemy French lands where they created their own version of Arthur being bested by a French knight in combat and cheated on etc.
@@Seegster77 What you are regurgitating is actually British prpaganda. Who is the cheating party whose agency and existence is getting completely ignored here? Guinevere. I know you think she was a prize with no role of her own, and without Lancelot that would of course automatically make her a sweet submissive doting wife to Arthur, but sorry to inform you her infidelity is actually the OLDEST part of the legend.
I'm curious, why is the cuckooing of that old guy from the Winchester Round Table (which has the name of "fake character" Lancelot on it 🤔) so important anyway? Why don't you care that Helen was actually a cloud and never went to Troy instead?

Lancelot: “It’s over Arthur !!! I have the high ground !!!”
Arthur: “You underestimate my Excalibur !!!”
The horsemanship in this is great. Lancelot's horse is so agile as it darts back and forth.
I was just thinking that. Lotta stunt actors these days, you don't see horsemanship like this. Hell, even LOTR doesn't have riders like this.
@@nndaystar The budget in armor sets was huge only comparable to LOTR and in friggin 1981!
I was impressed with Arthur's horsemanship. How fluidly he snatches the lance and how he launches the animal on the second joust.

He said, "cleverer," actually. I know the entire script and can recite it word for word from memory alone.

Not to be that guy, just saying
Excalibur is great
Same, brother! I was 11 and have never forgotten seeing it in the theater. My dad was an absolute hero who took me to see JAWS, ALIEN, and EXCALIBUR. Mom never knew 😁 We are a special generation.
I think this is the absolute best King Arthur movie ever made and easily the top 3 movie of nights and middle ages!!!!!!!! I was hooked the first time I seen this when it came out. I especially like it when King Arthur used Excalibur used it to change the outcome of the fight and Marlins reaction and when the lady of the lake brought back Excalibur.
Achilles : Imagine a King who fights his own battles. Arthur : Hold my Beer
Imagine Achilles versus Lancelot.
What a battle that would be. :)))
Arthur's armor is dark. It shows how he's still not 'purified'. Lancelot is innocent and pure. Then even he must redeem himself later on. Love this movie.
This is one of the last "Movies" as far as art put on celluloid.
It just needed a little 'Brasso'
Arthur knows he behaved in an undignified manner in this duel. He was motivated by pride. This is why once he uses Excalibur’s magic powers to win, he feels ashamed of his conduct. Arthur is a good man, but flawed nevertheless. This is why this film is amazing.
Arthur's armor is like his father Uther. Had nothing to do with shiny stuff being good.
Is it me, or does king Arthur look like a crazed madman in this scene, completely unreasonable, whereas sir Lancelot looks a lot more noble, respectable and reasonable?
Yeah it's kinda weird. But I guess he doesn't like to lose.
@@tronovonflidder775 Yeah. I just imagined king Arthur would look more... Royal..... More.... Respectable.... More..... Kingly.
But in this scene, I actually prefer Lancelot to king Arthur.
@@zhouwu
Gotta keep what Lancelot did into consideration though. The man slept with the queen and killed his fellow knights, as well as dooming the kingdom. Arthur may be a sore loser but he ain't no rabid dog like Lancelot ends up to be.
Given that he had no real training as a Knight, and went from his brother's squire to being a King, I guess that hasn't caught up with him yet lol.
@@jeffburnham6611 Fair enough! I guess it just comes to show that the slow way is the prevailing way. Maybe if king Arthur were a better Knight, Guinevere would never have ended up falling head over heels for sir Lancelot.
Nicholas Clay was a great actor. He was the mentor of a friend of mine who said he was a great man. He called him one day and told
him he had a fight of his own and apologised for not being able to help him more.
Such a sad thing to die so young.

So refreshing. Gentleman's combat. No kicking, fancy moves. This movie is fantastic in it's realism
What's wrong with kicking? Properly done, it can save your life. Most powerful limbs one has
Kicking is a valid strategy. Plus, in mail hosen and with full plate along with it being in awkward angle, even a mace will difficulty trying to bent it.
Yeah, no. In real life, they didn't fight like gentlemen. If kicking someone prevented them from impaling you with a sharpened length of metal, then you kicked them. Ironically, you seem to be romanticising medieval combat more than Hollywood does.
No CGI, no hypertouched filter colors, no forced camera settings... oh boy, I miss classic style filming..
What a stupid comment.
The Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones are cinematographically much more impressive, ambitious and interesting than this film. At all levels.
@@jeremyfilliavertini2019 LOTR movies are one of the few examples where they use wisely CGI, but nowadays mostly CGI is overused, confusing and just for the sake of fillimg a movie with pyrotecnics trying to make up the lack of plot, characters or skills on filming

A quirky and very stylized movie, for sure. But also, the best movie to ever attempt to take on the Arthurian legend. By far.

Judging by their armor, Lancelot is a Christian knight already on the quest for the grail and Arthur is yet a pagan, aka a dragon worshiper
Aram Sargyan his family name is Pendragon. The Dragon is the force of nature personified.
@Scranvan I.e. "Frenchman".

And where did a Christian knight got you? We acting like the crusaders did good or something the guy committed adultery and you say he's a Christian Knight he slept with his best friends wife behind his back he should be dammed in hell for that
A christian knight who committed adultery
What a legendary battle!
I've seen this film once and I loved it. It's one of my favorite medieval movies of all time about King Arthur and Excalibur, I'm going to purchase it on DVD and add it to my collection
I was looking for this! Thank you.
bro. how are you gonna joust somebody who’s literally called sir “lancelot”.... use your noodles ppl
It's also thought Lancelot may have been a nickname - "lance let" means "elf arrow" in the old Saxon language - so the original 5th century Lancelot dude may have actually been a skilled archer rather than a swordsman.
@@chooseyourpoison5105 Lancelot was created by the French to spite the English. Lance-a-lot is a symbolic reference to the obvious. He was meant to humiliate Arthur in every way including take his Queen. Subsequent iterations of the legend made him more noble and even took away the adultery. What's survived is a combination of the two preserving the adultery.
@@sikViduser He wasn't created by the French, there are earlier iterations of the character that predate Chretien de Troyes' Le Morte d'Arthur, including the German Lanzelet and the Welsh Lamhcalad. The earlier versions make no reference to adultery at all. It's thought that Chretien de Troyes threw in the whole love triangle bit to please his patroness, Marie of Champagne, who, like Eleanor of Aquitaine, adored "courtly love" scenarios and paid her protegees to write them for her.
@@chooseyourpoison5105 There's some debate as to whether he has his origins in earlier Welsh legends. But the entire character as we know today is most likely a complete invention of de Troyes
Not a boast but a curse!
this makes you appreciate the black knight scene in monty python's in search of the holy grail.
I can't find the clip where Lancelot fights himself in a dream only to awakened impaled by his own sword. HOW did they film the sword being removed from his side and STILL looks so real!
@ad
Really?
I suspect that they used a dummy torso, plus a clever camera angle, to film pulling the sword out of Lancelot's side. If you watch the scene, actor Nicholas Clay actually has his leg up between his chest and the fake "torso." Film it from a certain angle and it looks like it's all one body. The same technique is used when Morgana gives birth to Mordred. There was a hole cut in the altar and actress Helen Mirren had her head sticking up out of the hole, with the rest of her body hidden below, while a real pregnant woman lay on the altar, miming labor pains, with her head hidden beneath Helen Mirren's veil. Film the whole thing from the right angle, and hey presto, Morgana is giving birth!
What happened to fantasy aesthetics like this? You can literally feel the magic in this movie entirely.
magnificent setting that hillside and trees and green, when the two ride at each other...wow
I love the clacking of the armor

i love the sound of the armor
You don't take off your helmet, just because you are fighting off your horse, LOL!
Yeah. I LOVE "Excalibur" but always chuckle at that bit. Of course the only real reason the actors removed them was so that we could hear the dialogue and see their facial expressions.

Almost feel bad for those that do not watch good movies man...
Super cool. I remember seeing a documentary about the guy who made the armour.
*I will not.*
Best movie.
Evan if it looks, a little, inaccurate. I do love, the style, of the armor in this, film. It reflects, the character's different, personalities. Lancelots is in the shape of a mighty, dragon.while Arthur has a demon like, pattern to his. Evan the colors of the armor are properly, suited for the characters. Pure, silver for honor and purity. Black for more of a corrupt, spirit.
His black armor does not represent corruption but darkness.
@@thegamingspas12guage50Why not both?

All the following catastrophies and drama would be spared if Arthur just let Lancelot win and go to continue his quest.
The Greeks called it hubris, arrogance... for catholics it's the worst sin, because it was what made Lucifer fall from the Grace of God. That's why Arthur's knights had to search for the Holy Grail, to remind their King he's just a servant of God and a simple man, as anyone else
No wonder Lancelot is good at jousting. It's in his name, lance-a-lot.

This movie got me into so much trouble. 17 tell my mom going to the Friday night movie at our local theater. I'll be home a little after midnight. I sat through this whole movie just entranced. Not knowing this was a 2 hour movie ( most were an hour and a half back then) I get home at almost 1am. My mom didn't believe I d been a the theater that long. Grounded me. Later she found out I wasn't lying rescinded the grounding. But she did say she had her doubts about me sitting still for two straight hours. All I could say its a great movie.
Side note Helen Mirren was beautiful in this movie, but personally l think she's down right gorgeous today.
They are matched because Excalibur and Lancelot's "curse" cancel each other out in combat.
It’s ok. Props to Boorman for having a crack at this scene but I think even he’d agree that the definitive version was Monty Python’s Holy Grail.
