I was 22 years old, when this album was released in 1977. Living in a cheap little pay-by-the-week motel room in South Lake Tahoe. I got off work, bought the album as I walked home from work in the snow.....fired up a bowl & turned down the lights. I had a tiny artificial Christmas tree plugged in.....& sat there in the dark, but for the flashing colored lights......my headphones strapped on & just trippin' to the magic.

I was BORN in 1977, and it took me until college to discover this album. But thatâs the beauty of music, ya know? Music recorded before I even existed became a significant part of who I am. And it ainât like shit has changed. The message of this album, the picture it paints of modern life, was every bit as resonant in the late 90s when I discovered it as it was in â77, and is every bit as resonant now in [checks date] 2021.

I did basically the same thing on a lake in Minnesota as a teenager in 2003. Good times. I still remember my first time listening to a few different Floyd songs.
Animals - Dark Side of the Moon - The Wall - Wish You Were Here. All of those albums are a masterpiece from beginning to end.
Meddle is # 1. That was and is their opus

First time I heard this was over 40 years ago late at night, alone, in an old mining shack in the desert with the wind blowing outside about 30-40 mph. I was shook.
Wow Daniel! Me & my friends ( who, to this day are still testing tanks there) in an adobe house in the AZ Sonora Desert - 40 years ago, a small living room with black light, a 3ft. bong, & ice cold keg of Heineken.. To you my man!
I heard it about the same time, only I was on a tiny overnight ferry crossing the Mediterranean from Kos to Kalymnos. It had room for 20 people. A storm came up and we all thought we were going to die. Someone had a walkman and he let me listen to the whole album. It was a trip I'll never forget.

I'm only a highschool freshman as of this year and I just heard this song for the first time today, Animals might be one of my new favorite albums.

I can get so emotional just watching your reaction listening to these unbelievably great songs that I have listening to since the early 70's. We knew how good this music was back then but to see it transcend decades and still give others the same feeling that I had when I first heard it is just so , so pleasing.
I saw Pink Floyd during their Animals tour in 1977 at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal. It was fantastic! Us young Vermonters were down on the grass surrounded by French Canadians tripping hard. We all danced together all night as they spun the music around the stadium. So good. I'm so glad I was a teen in the 1970's in northern Vermont and so close to Montreal, one of the greatest cities in the world. Watching reaction videos has made me appreciate that time even more.
My advice to you young man... Listen to ALL of those Pink Floyd songs over and over until you know them by heart... HELL, WE DID! đ (at least those of us that grew up in the 70's / 80's)
I was 20 when this came out, and I was fortunate to see them on this tour in MSG. At the time (mid-70's), we were surrounded by so much good music, so much variety, such originality, and amazing musicianship. That was the rock era back then. And you took it for granted because the riches were so easy to be had. Only now, upon reflection back, do I realize we didn't know how good we had it. While certainly standouts, Pink Floyd was far from the only "huge" popular band of the time. That same summer I saw all of the following: Led Zeppelin, Eagles, ELP, Return to Forever, Dave Mason, Al Stewart, Kansas - all within 3-4 months. But as time goes on, the true genius works stand tall. And of all of them, I say that Floyd's catalogue will stand the test of time and , like Mozart, Bach, & Beethoven, will still be played 100's of years from now. Watching you get completely absorbed in this song proves their music is universal and timeless.

For a ânewâ Pink Floyd listener, as this gentleman seems to be, is looking for inspiration from their enormous collection, what is a never ending comfort for me has been, Great Gig in the Sky. Every time I have had a surgical procedure, and there have been plenty, I listen to this song as I am being medicated for surgery. It always makes me think of Heaven in case things go wrong. Comfort while drifting of to sleep.

I've introduced a lot of people to Pink Floyd and I always love seeing the look on their faces when the tempo changes or a transition within the song happens. That's probably why I like watching this video it's emotional music
The album Animals has lyrics based on the political parable Animal Farm by George Orwell. The pigs were the politicians, the dogs were the greedy business men, and the sheep were us. It's my favorite Floyd album.
I remember a girl challenging me to name my favourite Pink Floyd song, to see if I was a 'real' fan. When I said 'Dogs'... she'd never heard it & didn't even know the Animals album existed... so much for being a 'real' fan!! You're on one hell of a sonic journey D... there's a lot more where this came from!!

I've been a fan of Pink Floyd since first hearing 'Dark Side of the Moon' in 1975. The thing about their music is.....depending on where I'm at in my life experience.....the meanings of the songs will change, if you know what I mean. I'll go back & forth between WHICH one of their albums might be my favorite. 'Animals' seems to be the one I find myself returning to most often though.....
And now by the same album SHEEP...I love this.

A Floyd album that is much overlooked is OBSCURED BY CLOUDS ...Do yourself a favor and check out on this album the songs "The Gold It's In The?" or "Childhood's End" or "Free Four" or "Stay"..... BUT I would suggest my all time favorite Floyd song "Wot's...UH the Deal" the whole album is about getting older and again and ones dreams...both those realized and those not achieved, .The lyric/messages/themes are a major part of this album
years ago I saw the movie "The Valley", because of its soundtrack... well, the movie stands on its own. however; it was delightful when, whenever music would start playing- it was Pink Floyd. peace.

Pink Floyd is my favorite band. They based all their music on their own personal life experiences and what they saw going on in the world around them.
Every member of the band on top of their game and whilst everyone mentions Gilmour and Waters or even Wright, Nick Masons drumming was always on point!
Brian Humphries (Engineer on Animals) thought that Masons drumming should have been even more prominent in the mix as it was very good and Ricks Keyboards are up there to.
Individually yes, as a band they were having fights already with Roger... Sad!

Always loved the Animals album! Their two previous albums, (DSOTM, and WYWH), featured an extended band, smooth and relaxing sax solos, and Female backup singers, (which I DID LOVE), but Animals went back to the original band doing their own thing, and rocking it out! I do realize they had to have an extra guitarist, (Snowy White), to play this live. The bulk of this album was written and performed back before Wish You were Here. By the time this album was made, they changed the lyrics around, but had perfected the music! It was changed enough to fit into the âconceptâ! Many considered it harsh and bitter, and certainly much harsher than the smooth previous albums. I loved it, because it was the core band rocking out more than ever before!
Dave Gilmour's guitar on this track is nothing short of sublime.....

I've been a fan of Pink Floyd since the Dark Side of the Moon album in 1973. I saw them live in 1980 at the Nassau Coliseum In Uniondale NY performing The Wall. The most incredible, phenomenal, show I've ever seen! And that's what is was too, not only a concert, but a SHOW! They only performed a few shows of the Wall concert here in the states, 3 on the east coast and 3 on the west coast. It was quite an accomplishment being able to get tickets to any of those shows, especially since Pink Floyd consistently sold out ALL their concerts!
I was in a Rock band back in those days, and Pink Floyd was the only bands we did NOT even try to cover,........why you ask? Too complicated and difficult to replicate most of their music.
I don't know if you've seen any Comfortably Numb videos, but I'd like to recommend two different concert videos for you to watch, both epic concert in their own right. The first one is from the Pulse Concert in 1994, a tremendous solo and ending, It'll give you an idea of the kind of show PF use to put on. The second one is from the Live8 concert in 2005. In that concert the 4 original members of the band, (excluding Sid Barret who left the band in 1968), were reunited for the first time in 24 years!!

A lot of my black mates have been brought up listening to quite a narrow spectrum of music. When Iâve introduced them to what I suppose is music that is traditionally listened to by more of a white audience, they canât believe it has escaped their attention. Especially, as I have more than often listened to most of what they were brought up hearing. Itâs so good when other people are genuinely grateful for new musical experiences. My older brother has put me onto so much stuff that Iâm eternally in his debt.

At 19, I introduced my girlfriend to Pink Floyd. She could not believe how rich the music was. She normally listed to Madonna. Not an indictment, just different. We married and divorced. 30 years later, we still talk. She recently, brought up how much she enjoyed being introduced to Pink Floyd.
Also wanted to point out the stone metaphor in this song. Roger used it in a few songs. You might remember it in Hey, You. The stone symbolizes the burdens we carry through life.
Their albums are amazing. Playing Animals and the Wall from start to finish....hands down my therapy go to. đ a couple more to cherry pick: fearless, on the turning away, and learning to fly.

"Animals" boils down all of humanity down to dogs, pigs, and sheep. As with other Pink Floyd records, listening to the whole album puts it all into perspective. Again, a great reaction video D. Keep them coming.

Listen to The Great Gig in the Sky, this song will take your soul tear it out, show it to you and put it back slightly altered. Also the female vocal in this song was done in one take, listen and you will understand.
Claire Torry improvised the vocals in Great Gig. If I remember rightly they went with her third attempt after she told them there was no way she could top it. The ultimate "primal scream".
They paid her a pittance of a day rate, but later gave her something approaching appropriate compensation. . . And a writing credit.

I was 20 and a year out of high school when the album dropped. I was supposed to go the the concert in Miami but got sick and my friends still talk about that experience. This is my personal favorite song by Pink Floyd (Shine on you Crazy Diamond, close second).
D. Mont, you remind me of my 30 year old nephew that passed in a motorcycle accident three years ago. I'm caucasian, he was Puerto Rican but as much a son as my biological sons. He loved the old (good) music, all genres and I was his music mentor when it came to the rock classic bands. Pink Floyd was and is my favorite and I thought of him as I watched this song and a couple others with you. Thank you brother and peace out; you brought back some good memories of Pink Floyd and rock in general and some great memories of listening with and teaching my nephew, rest in peace. Listen to some old Cat Stevens, "Tea for the Tillerman" and "Teaser and the Firecat"

Lyrically, musically, production wise, guitar, vocals... the band has few peers.
Gotta do 'Dark Side of the Moon' from beginning to end. Two or three songs at a time as they all blend into each other. Or you can do side one all at once, and post it piecemeal as you wish. Then side two. You've already heard "Time" from this album, but don't skip over it should you do it or you'll ruin the flow.
Watching someone listen to all of Pink Floydâs songs for the first time is like watching your friend having their first psychedelic experience

Moody Blues started the idea of what is called a concept album (a piece of music that deals with a single or theme) Pink Floyd took the concept album to the next level and their albums were meant to be listened to from beginning to end (that's when they really blow your mind!).
One of the few bands to ever reach their potential... Dark Side is arguably is the most perfect album ever recorded, but these guys were just the best for years and years after that, the Animals tour was the most expensive $ ever in its time!

Pink Floyd's name was derived from the given names of two black musicians whose Piedmont blues records Sid Barrett had in his collection, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. Check them out on Goggle. I call Pink Floyd's sound blues rock.
Bit with all the synths and the computerised sounding barking is one of the most fabulous sounding pieces of music ever recorded.
Pink Floyd has songs that move me into another channel of feeling. Dogs is perhaps tops along with Childhood's End, Time, Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Echoes and The Thin Ice.

I saw Roger Waters live a couple of years ago and when they played Dogs, I cried so badly!!! This is by far my favorite song ever and no, you're not being cliché...is a fact, Pink Floyd's music speak to your soul!! They're the best band in the whole universe!!! Great job on the Pink Floyd journey, my brother. Youâre bringing me on the journey again- I first went on it about 40 yrs ago- the music still feels the same- itâs still lifts my mood, but can be dark and haunting too- incredible, timeless artistry at the genius level.
This song never fails to move me. Full of depth and darkness, a real scathing take on how this society chews up and spits out the person who tries to fulfil those expectations. And the comparison with what happens to a lot of dogs when they get old and sick is just so sad and fitting.
Your love of Pink Floyd proves you're a genius. Piper at the Gates of Dawn is their first album. A different sound than their other stuff, definitely worth a listen.

Some other great Floyd songs that people might not suggest are The Gunner's Dream, The Final Cut, and Two Suns In the Sunset; all off the Final Cut album. Definitely worth a listen.

The floyd my favourite band. But to try other bands from my era ( i'm 70) try led zepplin Dazed an Confused, and Stairway to Heaven. Deep Purple Child in Time and Smoke on the Water and for a difference Renaisence Mother Russia.

Dang! Renaissance? You surprised me with that one, but I agree 100%. Annie Haslam has the most remarkable voice ever heard in the rock world...I would LOVE to see D hear her voice for the first time. I'd recommend "Scheherazade" as well...gorgeous vocals. I watched them perform that live, opening for Stanley Clarke, in Detroit in the mid 70's. 99.999% of the crowd was there to see Stanley Clarke--she didn't get the reception she deserved.
I appreciate your first listen videos - you get it. Listen from beginning to end without pausing the tracks to comment. You sir, are aces in my book! Thanks for sharing, I love seeing Pink Floyd's legacy live through the younger generations (my daughter loves them, as well). Part of me feel the newer generations finding Pink Floyd for the first time appreciate the music more than mine did (I was 16 when this album came out) because so many of my peers were getting high in order to listen, to 'get in their head-space'. Like it was a requirement!

If you want to take a deep look behind their music, watch Pink Floyd: Live at Pompei. It has live performances of their earlier work in an empty ruins of a coliseum. Between tracks, it has commentary and interviews where they share a bit of info about the band and in how they make their music. For any Floyd fan, its a must watch. Its the quintessential Pink Floyd experience. Find a dvd, or a site that streams it, but watch it in its entirety. Doesnt even need to be a reaction video. Watch it in your own time and get completely sucked in. The tracks Echoes Part 1 & 2 are some of the Floyd's best work.

The best band ever. All of Animals, all of Dark Side, all of Meddle, all of Wish You Were Here. Then The Wall which feels like a completely different journey.
Their album "dark side of the moon holds the record for most weeks on the billboard top 200 albums, a total of over 950 weeks, the album cover is classed and been awarded the best cover of all time, this should be your first full album experience, followed by wish you were here, animals and the wall and the final cut for some emotional tunes, earlier records are brilliant but expect some psychodelic stuff with the really early stuff, the years after the final cut are brilliant too but this after the main lyricist left, but the music is insanely brilliant, the concert footage of the pulse album also needs to be watched, pink floyd pretty much invented the amazing lighting at concerts, and the pink floyd early footage of echoes live in pompeii is brilliant too

Pink Floyd Animals came out in the Spring of 1977 of my Senior year in high school. This album was playing everywhere in 1977 during the summer of playing frisbee in parks, partying, and just chilling. To this day i break it out every Spring for the last 40 + years.
