  • Hey friends - I hope you're all keeping well!!! This is the first tutorial I've ever done so I hope it's okaaay! Let me know your thoughts - apologies that I don't have any sheet music, but I hope the guided walkthrough and midi download are helpful to at least some of you 😊 I'd love to know what you think and if anything can be improved or made more useful, plus I'd love to hear any tunes you'd like to see broken down like this, so please drop them in the comments! ✌️
    The midi download is available below - import it into whatever midi software you have (ie synthesia, or a DAW like garageband/logic etc) at 120bpm to see all the notes! 🎹

      And in turn, YOUR story inspires me to play more!
      Lately I've been paying closer attention to the magic that happens when a specific action (performing/teaching/care-giving) actually creates joy/learning/love, basically out of thin air. And how, once given, it radiates outward from person to person in ways that we can't always see, and will never fully know. But seeing little bits of this process, like how Hank created this joy/teaching from scratch, it radiated to 28mitchell1, who then created more music and shared their inspiring story which radiated outward to all us. Millions of these invisible ripples are affecting us constantly through every interaction. And they all originated from specific acts by specific people, known or unknown to us. My point in all of this is that we all need to better recognize and appreciate when and how this happens, because this invisible flow of joy/learning/love is actually THE ONE TRICK that will allow us to evolve beyond the hate, division, fear, greed, and ego which seem to be regaining traction and slowing our progress toward an enlightened society. You know, one that aliens would be willing to visit. I'm just sayin'...

    Great job!!! If I was a beginner, sure, that would be a bit much / and maybe too fast. But that’s what stop and rewind is for. Such a beautiful song. Do musicians really play the left hand so spread out in concert, or no? Super challenging. Perhaps with practice I can stick it every time. For now seems crazy

    • @HenryNewbury
      @HenryNewbury  Před 5 měsíci

      Thanks Shaun! Glad it is helpful :)) I often use the CZcams controls to play the video at half speed, it works a treat which I've found useful. And I suspect so with the left hand - wide voicings can sound really nice so I wouldn't see why not to do it live :p They can be easier if you play almost behind the keys as in your hand is closer to you. An example being your pinky could be down on the note c, whilst leaning against the vertical part of the d next to it, and your thumb could be down on the second e above with it's left side against the vertical part of the d next to that e - if that makes sense - playing back of the keys rather than trying to play them on the top surface. This way gives you a bit more space with white notes ☺️ I hope that helps!

    • @HenryNewbury
      @HenryNewbury  Před 10 měsíci

      Ah thanks so much Sam! I learnt it by ear, so really just listened to the Justin Vernon recording and tried to break it down into really small manageable bits to learn, then stuck them together. I sometimes find slowing the video down in the video settings a really useful tool as CZcams doesn't change the pitches, so you can hear the same thing just a bit slower, and give yourself a bit more time to pick out notes 😊 I hope that helps and thanks again, super glad you like it! 😊

      Thanks so much Tracy! I am very glad if it helps :))
      And hmm if it's the left hand and the notes are just d, a and f then I would personally call that a d minor voiced with the third at the top. A dmin11 would imply the 7th, 9th and 11th notes all being added, which would be the notes c, e and g respectively mixed in with the 1, 3 and 5 of the dminor triad (ie some ordering of d, f, a, c, e, g which are the 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 to make up dmin11) which you could also call a C Major triad over a d minor triad. Anyways, this combination of notes could definitely happen in this song and when playing them software might then tell you it's a dmin11, which would be correct, but getting super bogged down in the exact namings of the chords isn't thaaat important so long as you are playing the notes you want to play :)
      In summary, a dm11 is just an extension of a dm :)
      I'm not sure if that's a reaaally useful answer but let me know if you still have questions! 😊 And thanks again!

    When I'm trying to import midi files to Musescore, I'm getting an empty screen, no notes. Same thing in a different program. Any clue why ?

      I actually think the original is Bb Major / gminor but may be wrong - but the Justin Vernon / Bon Iver version which I first loved is in C Major so this is from that :p I might do a tutorial in the original key if it would be useful as TBF it has some great piano lines ☺️☺️

    how many piano keys should i buy for this to play?

      If you're going for a keyboard, if you can't get full 88 keys I would recommend getting as close to that as possible. 76 or 73 I think is the next step down, which is a good size - convenient to move around without being maaaasssive and can play almost everything :) You can of course go smaller, it's just a question of how much space you are willing to lose to make up for convenience and smaller size. I hope that helps! :)
