    Short answer: no.
    Long answer: definitely no.
Zombies pose little to no threat whatsoever. First, let's answer the most important question:
Are we talking about dead body Zombies or are we talking about an infection where the host is still alive?
In the first case, natural decomposition quickly sets in, your bodies inhabitants (bacteria and fungi) start eating you from the inside out and all the biological functions that allow you to move, think and perceive cease functioning (e.g. digestion -> energy or breathing -> energy). In other words, the zombies will simply topple over and become unable to move after a very short time, probably within a day or two. And even before that, they won't be very efficient at spreading their infection because moving quickly requires a lot of energy.
In the second case, if we assume something like a rabies-like disease, Zombies would be able to last a bit longer and move just as a normal humans would or even faster if their mental inhibitors regarding muscle use are removed (a normal human is only able to use 30% of their muscle strength outside of emergency situations to prevent damage to the muscles. That's why a e.g. mom can lift a tree to save her child, but will have trouble lifting a heavy bag any other day). However, the limits of a normal living body would still apply. To function, a living mammal needs food, water and oxygen.
Assuming the virus inhibits brain function, the Zombie would be able to save energy on that front but would still need to expend it on any other action. That means they that just like a normal human, they need a constant food intake. Given that they are biting humans to turn them, they're obviously not eating them in their entirety so we're left with the problem of what are the Zombies eating to maintain function? Each other? Great, problem solves itself. Their victims? Great, no new Zombies. Animals? Not that many around in an urban environment and hard to catch without tools, so not very useful. Plants? Again, not that abundant in an urban environment and also very inefficient/indigestible outside of food crops.
All of this is in the short term. We're not even talking about nutrient deficiencies in the long term like Calcium, which is needed to maintain bone strength.
Water is a similar problem. First of all, if we assume it is a variant of rabies (and rabies is the most-zombie-like disease we have), people with rabies turn hydrophobic. That means, they are afraid of water and therefore can't drink it (they will also get swelling in their throat if they try, which means it's even harder). But lets say that's not the case, that means that the zombies regularly need to congregate around fresh water sources. That makes it incredibly easy to set up ambushes and kill zones. Unlike food, without water you will die within 3 days, and that is assuming you are gradually reducing activity and not being in metabolic overdrive like living zombies are usually depicted.
In other words, you just need to wait for a maximum of three days for the zombies to start dropping like flies. It's very easy to barricade yourself inside for that long, even with the supplies that a normal household will have at hand.
The last biological point is exposure. Depending on where you are, being out in the open all the time will do quite a number on your body. From frostbite in the winter to severe burns/dehydration in the summer to massive loss of body temperature in rain, having no access to shelter is a death sentence for us naked apes. It will take longer thathe biological factors, but it will still be quick, especially in the more extreme regions of the world like Canada or Nevada.
Now that we have covered biology, let's talk military. A zombie is not a virus. It isn't invisible to the naked eye and it doesn't enter our bodies. It's a huge lumbering mass of flesh. It's quite easy to shoot. And humanity has gotten *very* good at killing other humans. A single soldier with an assault rifle and a few clips of ammo can shoot dozens of Zombies with ease. Even easier with a machine gun (see the casualty rate of suicide charges in WW1 trench warfare) not to mention mounted turrets, artillery, explosives, drone and rocket strikes etc.
And what exactly is a zombie going to do against an APC or a Tank? Gnaw on it? All the driver has to do is simply drive into the 'horde' and crush them under the treads.
No, a zombie apocalypse will not stand the test of a military response. But even just regular police already have access to crowd control like water throwers, riot gear and armed response teams. Then, depending on the country, civilians might also have guns. In Israel for example, pretty much every adult (jewish or druze) male has gone through military training and if they are in the reserves, will have access to their service weapon.
In the US most people will have gotten laughably bad weapons training, but with enough ammunition even a complete beginner will hit a target.
Anyway, the zombie apocalypse is simply no threat outside of computer models that are drawn up for fun. The idea that each zombie is able to bite one human a day is fun in a statistic but has absolutely no bearing on reality. That would be like saying, each person with COVID-19 is infecting at least one other person every single day. And that one is a lot harder to prevent.
The biggest actual threat of a zombie apocalypse would be a virus that is extremely virulent and very resistant with a 100% lethality and a long enough incubation time to spread exponentially and is either airborne or waterborne. But in that case, the Zombies are the least of your concerns. The virus is what will kill you.
Anyway, enough rambling. This post got a little long, sorry.

The zombie study that was done was a good experiment. But there's a reason they were students. They failed to counter the sheer number of factors. Such as population densities. Instead using an average, and how isolated groups would have the possibility of holding out for a long time, provided they got knowledge of the zombies before hand, isolated mountain towns could fortify themselves extremely well. Their model also didn't take into account the zombies health. Zombies that run out of food have to eventually starve, reanimated or not, for their bodies to produce enough energy to move, they need food. Also, flesh decay. Now not all zombie viruses are the same, but most play it off as they are actually dead and the virus is controlling the body just barely enough to keep it running. This leads to rot and decay. We saw this in the Walking Dead. With season 1 zombies being almost fresh corpses, some could be mistaken for living people if they weren't chasing you and trying to kill you. But season 6 zombies were obvious, with skin falling off the bone, what meat remained being rotten, hair and teeth falling out. This makes them exceedingly vulnerable to attacks. As they slow down from lack of muscle tissue and their bones soften they become little more than targets for human defenders, only becoming dangerous in groups. Where as the early zombies, even though hordes were the problem. Season 1 zombies were extremely dangerous inside small spaces like hallways and homes. But season 6 zombies were little more than a nuisance unless they were in a truly massive group. And it was clear, that by season 4, the zombies had deteriorated so far and the humans had become so adept at killing zombies. The only real threat was other humans.

    • @2009natman
      @2009natman Před 2 lety +4

Dont forget that if you live in a climate with varying weather changes where it gets incredibly cold or overly warm, the bodies would cease to function as the freezing temperatures would bring the body temp of a zombie so low it couldnt function and the heat would rapidly increase rate of decay on the bodies. So an Arizona summer or a Washington winter would be a form of protection during those seasons, the only real threat would be the spring and autumn months where the temperature is relatively cool enough to slow down the decay without freezing the corpse.

You severely underestimate the power of automatic weaponry.
Go check out a CWIS on a navy vessel. That's the onslaught zombies would get. It sounds like hell fire and looks like it too. It's made to murder everything in the vicinity from drones to rockets going mach-3. And spits enough lead to decimate entire fields of zombies.
Now toss those on humvees and river boats, maybe track vessels and amphibious assault crafts too. We could blanket America in galling turrets trained to shoot only zombies using computer technologies.
We would have drones surveying and marking targets for deletion, finding pockets of infestation, even clearing buildings.

Any person who has seen even a single zombie movie, book, etc should know to get away from that person. Even if a few people get infected, the virus shouldn't spread that far.
Say people for some reason think it's just a sick person since zombies are fictional. Isn't it still smart enough take into account that that person may have a infectious disease. Also, the moment you see someone get bitten is the time for you to realize your situation and act accordingly.

Where I see a flaw in a zombie apocalypse actually being apocalyptic would not be the zombies, it’d be the recovery.
If there were 99 zombies for each living person, feasibly, each person could kill one zombie a day, and by day 100, the world would be zombie-free.
I think Night of the Living Dead is probably the most accurate Zombie movie because the dead don’t win.

If a zombie apocalypse is to become a worldwide extinction event, the zombification agent has to be relatively simultaneous worldwide, and not having one ground zero and spread from there.
World War Z (the book) has to go through an enormous amount of bad luck, idiocy, incompetense and bad decisions to spread the zombie virus. It breaks suspension of disbelief, to be honest.
Also, the zombies can't be as slow and unthreatening as in TWD. They don't have to be like in 28 Days Later, but definitely not rotten and lethargic.
What TWD does right is that everyone already has the virus, they just need to die to be zombified. This can be brought even further; a incredibly long incubation time or a sort of dormant pathogen suddenly being activated simultaneously in the masses.

Surely being ripped apart and eaten multiple times, severed arteries, etc. would inhibit the ability for the zombies to effectively spread the virus. I like the game Project zomboid. In its lore, the zombie infection has two stages.
stage 1: food borne and water borne. You become infected by drinking infected water or eating infected meat. Most of the population is susceptible but some humans are naturally immune to the stage 1 infection. Meaning they can eat and drink all they want and never even feel a little sickly.
but then there's stage 2. Blood and saliva transmission via an infected individual. The zombies. There is no immunity against it. Scratches have a small chance to infect. Because typically there isn't infected blood under fingernails but with rotting corpses there can be. And bites are always 100% infectious. You can not survive a bite under any circumstance.
I like this multi-stage infection idea because it explains how rapid and wide-spread the infection happens in kentucky and how it continues to spread beyond the county despite the military enforcing quarantine. And eventually infects most of the planet. But still allows plenty of room for survivors to emerge and survive amongst the living dead.
I also like the game because you can choose what kind of zombie threat you want. And just how sparse or dense their population is.

I can’t believe no one makes this point, in order for a zombie to move or do anything it would need to use energy thus requiring functional digestive, circulatory, and respiratory systems to break down food and supply it’s cells with the energy. This would make the zombies susceptible to bleeding, suffocation, and trauma to the abdomen making them die not too far from how a human would. Along with that them biting people could cause them to die from their wounds or infection before becoming a zombie possibly leading to the virus being too virulent to be much of a threat.
It would be much much more of a threat if it were airborne though.
I’d say that a warm open climate for human quarantine would be more optimal as the zombies would decay and be infected with human-illnesses faster and will burn more energy trying to run across big open plains in the sun.
The number 1 fear I would have is a zombie reaching a cold climate and getting persevered in ice.

A few friends and I had this discussion a few years ago and we all concluded there were 4 things that would be essential for humanity's victory over the zombies: 1. Always go for the head shot. 2. Never go outside to check on that weird noise. 3. Everyone gets a full body bite inspection at least once daily. 4. Anyone who panics or freaks out is used as bait or to distract the zombies so the rational people who actually want to survive can make their escape. I added in that it would be best to move to the hottest and driest desert OR to the far north tundra. Basically any place that the environment would prevent zombies from reaching you. Desert would dry them out and arctic would freeze them solid and both options would leave plenty of time for easy clean-up by the living.
