That’s amazing Phil! My dear old Mum would remember so much of your old shots as she used to talk about them to us 😊
Nice one! All part of the nostalgia trip 😊
EXCELLENT ! AS A FAN OF HISTORY YOUR COMPREHENSIVE TOUR IS TOTALLY AMAZING INDEED! AND VERY ENJOYABLE. MANY THANKS ! FROM, U.K. (2024).
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Brilliant
Thank you!
Fantastic images and great sound track
Many thanks!
That's done so well. Thanks.
Thank you!
Superb Phil. Looks good. G
Cheers Graham 👍🏻
Outstanding work Phil. I grew up on Purley Downs Road and my parents were still there up until 2 years ago. That 'triangle' of South Croydon, Sanderstead and Purley will always be home to me. A lot of memories triggered from this video. The most fascinating thing was seeing the Royal Oak in it's original glory. Was my local and I have never seen a picture of the original pub.
Many thanks for your kind comments, Dave. Stay tuned, I am filming in South Croydon tomorrow so that will be added soon!
Excellent, look forward to it!@@philswallow
Absolutely cracking. Such good work to get things lined up. I went to the astoria cinema lots of time in the 80s, very run down by the end.
Great to see the Red Deer's deer statue goes back such a long way. I wonder if its the same one? Looks it.
Cheers mate, I think it is the same one, nowadays if it was damaged it would end up in a skip!
the swan and sugar loaf 🍞 😂😂😂
Great work - it is not easy to overlay old and new images so that they match so precisely. Are your old photographs taken from books/postcards or do you have digital copies to work from?
Thanks Ralph, they arrive with me as digital images that were from a mixed collection
I've lived in Purley for 50 years and so know most of these places but one thing i didn't know is that the roundabout/island outside the council tip in
Purley Oaks used to be a pub.I've heard somewhere that the lake by the side of the tip was created by a V1 during WW2 and wonder if that's what finished it off.Anyone know?
Hi Andy, I found this about the V1 in that area but it doesn't make direct reference to the lake itself: www.exploringsurreyspast.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/CroydonBC_V1_006.pdf
Sad to say it looked a lot better back then. Far more character
