I would have been 14 then and spent all my days in the park and the whole summer in that pool even on colder days . We used to bunk in over that small wall near the cafe . On a hot day there was great cues just to get in . Happy days

Grew up as a kid in this park...great memories.!
Shame how people don't realise what an asset they have on their doorstep.

Christopher, the pool water was always freezing cold, but still enjoyable. They used to post the water temperature on a chalk board that could be read as you waited in-line to enter ...... it never deterred us though :)

I grew up in Kirby Estate , right next to the park. In summer a van with a large screen would come round and show films for the children and there were sometimes a band playing on the bandstand. Back then the swings were still open and the tennis courts regularly used. The rose garden provided a quiet haven for older people and there was a paddling pond close by for the children. Such happy memories.

@ 1:50 doesn't look like Southwark Park, it looks more like the end of Greenwich Park looking towards Blackheath.

Jenny, it may not look like Southwark today, but believe me, it was Southwark in the 1960's. The pool (Lido) has since gone and I bet that the cafe/restaurant has gone too. The very end of the video reel is a very brief shot of Greenwich Park, near the Observatory.

@@PatrickThomasLong Yes I very much know what Southwark Park looks like today as I go there and walk my dog on nice days. :)

@@PatrickThomasLong yes, I was but only the part at the end of the video really. It's fine. :)

@@JenniferElliott1 Yeah, that final one second scene looks like Blackheath. But the rest is Southwark Park.
