I have always been interested in stained glass. One of my favorite places to visit when I was younger was a museum where the main room had stained glass windows and the sun going through them made the walls in between art pieces look magical. Okay but also how about making sure to use safety goggles, discussing using a vent hood when inside and always using a respirator mask when grinding or sanding any kind of material that can cause particulate matter, as well as when using flux and solder, as many fluxes contain toxic materials.
Stained glass is fun and easy, but the grinder similar to the one she shows is essential for a good job. (I started without one because I was a poor college student and they were expensive.) I've tried those plastic mats like she shows. I didn't like them. My favorite is a wood surface.
please think about buying a cheap fume extractor, there are several sub 100$ filtered ones that have a "trunk" you can point towards your workpiece. Solder and flux can be cumulative poisons, especially leaded solder can bioaccumulate and, for one, can cause horrible nerve damage. It makes me think of the British chemistry doctor who, famously, did research on organic heavy metal compounds a few years ago. This is of course WAY more dangerous, but she got two drops of methylmercury on her double-gloved hands and spiraled towards death in the following year. She left behind two kids and a mourning, world class research team. That of course is an extreme case, but all heavy metals have the potential to do this. Take care.
Lead will not boil at soldering temperatures, the risk from lead is ingestion and how it rubs off on everything. The fumes from soldering are from flux and other non-lead additives. Still toxic.
I litterally forgot i live about a 20 minute drive away from like the most famous glass making places in my country 🤣🤣🤣 wont be hard to fint the stuff i need their☺️
What metal(s) is the solder made of? I know that lead was common for a very long time but I don't know if something else has become more common since we've learned about lead poisoning.

I was telling my mom about how I'd been seeing these videos, and that it was dangerous for me because I love learning every sort of craft under the sun, and she told me that my dad used to make stained glass art 😮 Unfortunately this now makes it all the more tempting to buy supplies, because now it doesn't have to just be for me 😇 Definitely something I'd love to try!
the glass is in reality not very thin. i imagine that the solder also holds it together and makes it stronger than a glass piece of the same size as the resulting product. just use some good padding in the box and it should be cushioned just fine

How do you use your glass grinder with longer nails? I did a stained glass class once and that was the one thing I was really nervous about! I pay too much money getting my nails done to accidentally get them shaved down with the grinder 😂

Also PPE (a proper mask) to avoid breathing in glass dust, silica dust is terrible for you!

It’s 60% tin and 40% lead! There is a lead free solder but I personally have not tried it!

The fumes are an issue- you need to be doing this in a well ventilated area WITH PPE

YES. You want to use eye protection, and when grinding glass or using the soldering iron, you should absolutely have a respirator.
