Mikhail Tal's Audacious Queen Sacrifice - Tal vs. Hecht, 1962

  • For many, Mikhail Tal's most memorable queen sacrifice is his offering against Hans-Joachim Hecht. With exf6!!, Mikhail Tal pitted his minor pieces (all of which were soon hanging!) against Hecht's centralized royalty. Watch this amazing attack play out!
    Lessons:
    * When situations change, change plans ...c6?
    * When the opponent is uncastled, strive to catch the king in the center.
    * Don't fear a pawn down endgame when your opponent's structure is shattered.

Tal probably the greatest artist of chess the game has ever known.

I was happy to finally win a game with a queen sacrifice. Tal does it routinely!

4:43 Why gxf6 instead of Qxf6? Qxf6 looks like it would keep a solid pawn structure, bring the queen back to safety, and protect d6 from the fork.

I guess the problem is e5 and everything explodes, the knight is going to d6 anyway, Black's queen is under attack, you can't capture e5 without giving away a piece 'cause Re1 is coming, maybe Bxg6 will happen wrecking the pawn structure or something....
