  • Noctigon throwers are available in a wide variety of different options, all of which are great - but which is the best for you?
    This video breaks down and compares the three main Noctigon throwers currently available: The KR1, DM11, and K1. This video covers build and design, output, and throw numbers, while discussing the various different LED options and their pros/cons.

    I was not paid to make this video. The KR1 and K1 (and the shirts!) were sent to me free of charge by Jackson Lee for purposes of review. The green DM11 was sent to me by Hank Wang of Noctigon, while the other two DM11's were purchased with revenue generated by this channel. All measurements and opinions are my own.

    A couple notes:
    - This is not a fully comprehensive review of every configuration, just a general comparison of the three lights and a breakdown of the most interesting options available.
    - The importance of CC vs Boost drivers isn't covered much, while I think the boost driver is great, for these single-emitter lights LED choice is first priority.
    - The Wurkkos TS30S is seen briefly in this video, originally I dicussed it more but cut that out. It is an excellent 21700 Anduril thrower that fits right in between the DM11 and K1, and has an SBT90.2 for just $70. If you want this LED, the TS30S is my top recommendation.
    - Alternatively, the Emisar D4SV2 with Osram CSLPM1 (W2) LEDs is another option worth considering. Brighter than the SBT90, similar or better color, and throwy beam which is still great for general use. I recommend this over the SBT90 in either the KR1 or the DM11
    - Ultimately I'm just some guy on the internet, buy whatever the heck you want

      Wow, I never considered quad W2's. I love my D4SV2 with its high cri sst20 4000k but a throw version would be awesome. If the DM11 could use D4SV2's 26650 tube and battery, it would be killer.

      The lumintop GT Nano in Brass absolutely blew my mind TBH. I've had a few pen lights with 10180 batteries before and the most they could put out was roughly 130lm inside the pen designs. It's crazy how a battery the size of my pinky nail can pump out 450 lumens of quality light and actually manage to throw it far as hell considering the flashlight is slightly smaller than my thumb ffs lmao! I have the 10440 adapter too for the little guy. It just seems like a no brainer for me to snag it as it'll end up becoming much more practical in the 10440 config when the longer run times are needed/preferred.
      I'd love to work on buying the brass config of the 14500 lumintop GT right after this Hank light I had decided to buy first and foremost. Then the 18500/18350 sized lumintop GT in the copper config would be awesome to get eventually. I think a vintage style patina on the full sized copper version would be badass.
      I'd like to get the similarly sized 10180 lumintop frog light down the road as well along with it's adaptions but that's no rush though it's rated for 570 lumens! It would be nice to see how it performs compared to the GT Nano in throw and brightness.
      "Wow why do you need that?" Lol I stopped needing "that many" so many purchases ago! 😅😬😵 But whenever I see a design that's new to me that I really like. I'll pop it into the watchlist or cart and watch it for a while and try to catch it on a sale. Or I'll buy it then and there if the price is right and I like the design enough but typically that only happens with cheaper purchases that ship from China etc.

    I dig the USB C in the threads... I don't typically rely on the flashlight charger and sometimes they can be rather ugly or you lose the rubber stopper etc. Having it smack dab in the middle of the threading is nice especially since I don't unscrew that section much and sometimes you don't have a proper charger near by.

    I just ordered the 3 throwers from Hank based on this video. I paired the K1 with the SBT90.2, since this is the only body that would make sense for this LED. I needed a light with the Osram, but the KR1 was too tiny, so I figure the SFT-40 was a better option here. And the DM11 was left with the W1/W2 option for best throwing LED. IMHO, if anyone was going to order any one or combination of these 3 throwers, it's only a choice between the Osram (W1/2), the SBT90.2 or the SFT-40 for LED. Even though it's great that the option is there, It's a headscratcher why anyone would prioritize high CRI or tint in a thrower.

    • @LuxWad
      @LuxWad  Před 2 lety +2

      Haha yeah it's tough to make a decision on these. The SFT40 is indeed very popular in the KR1, probably because it's very bright and is a bit wider while still throwing pretty well... though I suspect a large part of it is the hype of a relatively new LED being available.
      D4SV2 with W2 is a beast! Probably the best all-rounder out of this whole bunch

I have the Acebeam P18 and love it for evening walks with our dogs, but I've given it up for the D4SV2.... The only one of the 3 here in the vid that challenges the D4SV2 is the DM11 with the SBT90.2, but even that ramps down way too quickly for my liking. Obviously weather and thermal calibration can make a HUGE difference. I only need a flashlight for winter nights (usually 5 degrees Celsius (=40 degrees Fahrenheit)) and at these temperatures heat isn’t an issue. I didn’t measure them on the go, but my dt8 could sustain level 6/7 (about 2400 lumens) and my SFT40 ran half the time on turbo and the other half on about 50% (probably a little over 1000 lumens). So I would guess my Kr1 Sft40 could sustain 1500 lumens under these conditions. Nothing surprising, but maybe a little perspective for someone.

    • @LuxWad
      @LuxWad  Před 2 lety +4

      Yes ambient temps and wind movement are very important. I do my testing in an enclosed area at 21C/71F, with the default target temp of 45C. This is basically the worst-case scenario for sustained levels, which I prefer as it is the most honest meaurement in my opinion - you can always expect the same or better performance in real-world use

      The XHP70.3 is a great option if you want a higher-output light with a floodier beam for general use. It also has pretty good tint and coloration. Personally I would go with something throwier in this light to take advantage of the big reflector, but the cree is great for making the light more useful at medium-long ranges instead of just super-long range.

      I think the DM11 is the better light overall, but it's not very good for carrying in a pocket regularly, the KR1/D1V2 is much better for that. Both are about the same for sustained brightness, DM11 lasts longer because it has a bigger battery though.
      A good warm LED would be the XP-L HI 4000K, 519a dedomed, or SST20 4000K.
