- Tea pets are one of my favorite pieces of teaware. In this video, I'll explain what they are and how to use them as part of gongfu tea making. I'll also be sharing my small menagerie of tea pets.
Do you have any tea pets? Let me know about them in the comments!

I'm writing a character who has tea ceremony as a hobby, and this video was super helpful and informative as research! Thank you so much for putting the time in to make it, and all your tea pets are so adorable
I'm so glad that it was helpeful. The character sounds awesome!
I was the one that named Zhu! I remember that contest :)
You were! He's still one of my favorites and has a lot more tea patina since then 😁
I don’t have a tea pet yet. But I’m excited to get one!
My Wife thinks that I’m nuts!!
That's awesome! Picking out your first tea pet is exciting. My husband thinks I'm nuts too. 😂
Yes! I love tea pets! So glad you did a video dedicated to teapets! 😃😁 and my teapets drink my tea with me for that very reason as to not consume too much caffeine. I have rabbits and birds. Those are my favorite animals. Love your tea pets!
They're the best! Such a fun addition to tea sessions. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who loves them 😄
Your tea pets are so cute! I especially love the pig and bat ones!
Thank you! I had to get the pig because that is my Chinese zodiac sign 😄
Oh dang! When you described your horse tea pet as the horse from “What’s Opera,Doc?” I nearly fell on the floor!
I am a classic animation guy,and that one is one of the best,Chuck Jones, director ❤️
Chuck Jones animations are the best 😂
RIGHT ON,Tea soul sister!!!😂
love it! i have a frog and also a pair of color changing geese ❤
I just got a pair of color changing foxes. So fun! 😊
📔🫶 what a lovely video!
Thank you! ☺
I have three tea pets so far. My first, a color changing dragon (that no longer changes color for some reason) still unnamed. A pig named Nips and a tiny frog named Ears (both named by my youngest daughter).
That's so cute that your daughter named your tea pets! I definitely find that the color changing tea pets tend to be less reactive over time.
Ok sorry,me again🙄
That snail by your friend,Joe Johnson,is a masterpiece.
Ok,ill sheddep shutting up(another cartoon reference)😊
It really is! One of my favorite tea pets. 😁🐌
Mines like a chonky blob, he looks like jaba the hut but he can wear a teapot lid as a beret
So cute! I use my tea pets as lid rests sometimes too
I got a tea set and a bat, the same bat as you for Christmas. I love bats
Awesome! I think he's super cute. 😊
I don't have a tea pet yet but it's one of the teaware pieces I plan to purchase next if I can decide what kind of animal I want.
I think that's the hardest part! There are so many options 😄
I have a hippo named Po. I immediately thought of the character from Mulan! But my hubby (who came up with the name) was like, "it was just short for hippo" hahaha but now i think hes named after Ling-Po hahahahaha
That's too funny! I'm afraid to let my husband name my tea pets. 🤣
I'm interested how you feel about non traditional non clay teapets that won't change colour after time with tea drinking? 😊
They're fine! The fun thing about tea pets is that they can be anything you like. I do personally prefer clay because they absorb the tea which changes their appearance over time.
I just got my first gongfu set and I got a teapet of Sun Wukong the monkey king.
How fun! I'm sure you're going to enjoy it. 😊
The irregularly shaped tea pets prevent splashing that might otherwise occur if the rinse was decanted directly onto the tray.
It does depend on the shape. Some of my tea pets make quite the splash. 🤣
Hello I have a question! Can I use a figure I already have as a tea pet, even if it isn't designed to be a tea pet? I have some small stone figures (goat, mule, duck) and a wooden one (elephant) that I enjoy a lot. Or would it be better to buy something specifically made to be a tea pet?
Thanks!
Edit: I also have a lovely ceramic goat, but it is a salt shaker, so it is hollow. Would this be a problem to use?
Goats are my favorite animal, I had them as a teenager, but I don't any more, so I like to keep goat figures and plushies around!
You can use just about anything that is water-resistant as a tea pet. Stone and ceramics are usually fine, especially since the salt shaker should have a plug allowing you to empty any tea that gets inside. For the wooden elephant, you can definitely have it on or near your tea tray but I wouldn't pour water on it since that would damage the wood over time.
@@teaformeplease awesome, thanks! I forgot about the plug on the bottom of my goat salt shaker. It doesn't have a matching pepper shaker, so I would love to give the goat a new use. I'll give him a try!
What stands do you use to keep your saucers up?
I found these really nifty plastic stands on Amazon amzn.to/34AOXpj
Do you have any invalid teacups? When I was able to go out shopping I purchased a few and I really love them.
I haven't come across any but that sounds interesting. :)
I've been watching videos on gongfu tea for a little while and I finally decided to get some for myself, I haven't bought a full set yet I just decided to get a minimal travel set and some nice teas to give it all a try, and I couldn't resist ordering a cute little friend, but my question is, how do I feed my tea pet without a tea tray? Can I just put the pet on a plate or something and pour the wash over him or is it bad for them to sit in the tea for an extended time?
You can definitely put them on a plate or in a bowl. Some people just like to have them sit nearby too. The great thing about tea is that there really aren't any rules. Discovering what works best for you at the moment is part of the fun. 😊
Tea party with tea pet
Yes! Tea pets make everything better. 😊
My first tea pet is in the mail a color changing durian fruit :)
Awesome! I'm sure you'll have lots of tea together.
Should a tea pet be rinsed with water after a tea session?
Great question! I wouldn't recommended rinsing them with water because that might prevent the patina from forming. You really want the tea to soak into the clay.
Thank you
I've been collecting tea pets since i was a tiny child, have always been drawn to them but I mainly have porcelain and ceramic ones, lots of tiny fish. My favourite is my tiny horse foal hand carved from quartz. My biggest concern is cleaning any kind of these babes, whether they're from my porcelain cabinet or the friends i keep seeing at the thrift stores I'm just concerned that they could be contaminated with an allergen or even just grime. And is it only the special clay that can be used or can some of my great grandfather's creations be used as tea pets without causing damage? Are there woods that are safest as i do have many of his carvings from every kind of tree he's seen. I don't wanna abuse my poor lil tea pets like I do my plants
Almost any object that can withstand hot water can be used as a tea pet. Lots of people do use rocks, crystals, and ceramic figurines. Wood might get disfigured over time so I would avoid sharing tea with those carvings. They can still join you on the table though!
Where do you find your tea pets from?
They've come from a few different places. Bitterleaf Teas, Umi Teas, and Teaware House are all great places to start.
I would love to find a hippo tea pet
That would be so cute! 🦛
I realize this is a year old, but there is a hippo tea pet on Amazon!! 😃
I like the idea of tea pets but no interest in the rest of the practice. If I put sweetener in my tea, would this hurt the tea pet?
I wouldn't recommend using sweetener because that would leave sticky residue over time, possibly attracting ants.
sorry, what is that compressed ball?
It's a ball of puerh tea! It comes packaged that way for individual servings.
Nah, I don't have tea pets it's not really my style. I do like your bat it's the cutest.
I really like the bat too. He reminds me of Batty Koda from FernGully. 😊
Is this Radiance Tea in Manhattan?
No, this is my living room 😁
Pee-pee-boy
Those are my husband's favorite 🤣
I really really really want a tea pet 😲🫖!!
You should get one! They're so fun. 😊
@@teaformeplease I will but I don’t know If I should get the three footed toad 🐸 or a dragon one? They both look cool
