Very true. First electronic song without lyrics that moved me to tears. It felt very deep and personal to me. Has me collecting FSOL stuff still to this day. Loyal fan. ❤
I was doing my apprenticeship. Called by my local record store and she put this in front of me. Life changed.
It was winter and wet and the corners of this ep are still damaged from the wet backpack i cycled home from work with. And i love it. It's part of my dna now. It genuinely moves me like nothing else.
Bought this in '93 and had the "I can't believe it" look on my face for months....still get it now when I listen. This and the Lifeforms remixes, ISDN etc etc.
Still remember hearing part 1 for the first time on northern exposure 1 around 1997ish. Still find it one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of work I ever heard. So far ahead of its time. Honestly could be released again now and still be more advanced than the "edm" shite thats around now.

Been a huge fan of FSOL for about 30 years ish, found this 12" in mint cond. at my local rec shop, today actually. For a very good price, full flashback tonight for shure🙃
I don't see AI ever making music like this. It's so exotic and brings so many samples together that wouldn't make any sense, yet blends them beautifully.
couldn't it just copy this and many other great pieces of music and blend them together to make something "new"? as for creating a groundbreaking sound, that's out of the cards for now with AI
@@rustynosebleed We'll see what AI can do. I think part of the magic is that when the artists are making something like this they can feel it how we do. Can you imagine getting this 70% together and giving it a listen and having your mind blown by your own work? I refuse to believe FSOL didn't feel exactly how magic this was when they heard it. AI can't do that. It can't feel that thing.

@@gregorygraham4117 I think you underestimate how much of your taste is just pattern recognition. AI is great at pattern recognition and replication.
This one and lifeforms EP (yes, the one with Liz Frazer's vocals) are pinnacles of musical achievement for the genre, whatever this could be classified as. Nonetheless, quintessential electronica, sounding like nothing else.

I bought this on cassette with the image on a cardboard sleeve. Hi fi tape deck favourite! Also, never forget dropping acid listening to the FSOL ISDN broadcast on a portable FM radio out in the uk outdoors/countryside…
acid in the countryside is So weird and strange. I still get tiny flashbacks from 3o years ago.
I listened to the live FSL Radio 1 broadcast in the back of a friends Bedford van driving to Kent tripping balls on acid .. it was quite the trip.

Hello. This piece of genius is almost 30 years old now. So what? I’ll tell you what - this was put together before people could sample and drag and drop sounds and beats on the pc/laptop. Like how the fuck? Waaaayyy before it’s time!! I still don’t think I have heard anything more creative than this and PNG. Ever!
I'm trying to work out how myself, for my own productions 😅 it always astounds me how tracks as complex as this were made back then
I had Steinberg Wavelab for editing and sampling, and Cakewalk 1 for sequencing the samples and midi devices. All drag and drop buddy

Yes, there was sampling and drag and drop back then, although it was way more limited and harder to come by (certainly less ubiquitous). Personally, I think their work is exceptionally well put together for any era, on any tech.

I love Lifeforms! This is the best fuck music ever recorded. And the funny thing is that no matter how much you turn up the volume, it always sounds pleasant and never distracting. Your sound system is the limit.
