Ring Doorbell Plus review

- Amazon’s Ring brand is practically a household name at this point with a lot of folks associating it with its doorbell products. On top of that, I’m very much invested in the Ring ecosystem and had positive experiences with several of Ring’s past products. So when Amazon announced the new Ring Battery Doorbell Plus back in March, I figured Amazon would continue its winning trend. However, as I’ve mentioned in my preview piece of the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus announcement, Ring faces some tough competition and it has led to this fresh new doorbell product.

Obviously, the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus fixes some problems and fills some gaps but the product name is a different beast as it seemingly doesn’t continue any of the existing series. This makes it even more important for me to review the doorbell and see exactly how this fits into the Ring family and who should actually buy this model over its cheaper predecessors and the still more expensive Ring Pro 2.
New Features
Because the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus has a similar feature set as the Ring Video Doorbell 4, I will point out the key differences between both models to serve as a basis for describing the new features here.
Head-to-Toe HD+ Video
The big new feature you get with the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus is Head-to-Toe HD+ video thanks to an upgraded 1536p resolution sensor. This improved camera means that the doorbell can capture a whole person from head to toe, making it a more suitable choice for package tracking. This Ring doorbell achieves this via a fisheye effect crammed on a 1:1 aspect ratio so don’t expect tall portrait view footage. This is perhaps for the best because Amazon Echo Show devices portray video in landscape orientation anyway. Because this sensor was previously exclusive to the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2, this addition makes the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus the only battery-powered Ring doorbell to have this feature at the time of writing.
Color Night Vision
Another interesting new addition is the ability to add some color to the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus’s infrared functionality. This will make nighttime viewing a bit more pleasant.
Why isn’t this called the Video Doorbell 5?
With the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus supporting the usual features found in the Video Doorbell 4 like live video, two-way talk, motion detection alerts, package alerts, and quick replies, you would think this new product should be called Ring Video Doorbell 5 or at least be considered as a spiritual successor to Video Doorbell 4. Unfortunately, Amazon had to complicate things by not carrying over every single feature to this new model.
What is lacking with the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus is the speedier 5.0 GHz wireless support and pre-roll feature. Not having 5.0 GHz isn’t the end of the world especially if positioned the wireless router far from the doorbell but the lack of a pre-roll could be a deal-breaker for some folks. Pre-roll was a nice feature of the Video Doorbell 4 as it can capture the past four sections before motion event trigger.
Overall Thoughts: Ring Battery Doorbell Plus
I love Amazon’s Ring Doorbell products and I was happy to finally see the Head-to-Toe feature finally make it to a battery-powered model, but I can’t help but scratch my head at Amazon’s positioning of the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus in the family. Remember, the Ring Video Doorbell 4 was released back in 2021 so a clear successor should have been in the cards. The Ring Battery Doorbell Plus has the qualities to be that successor especially with its $179 price tag ($20 more than the Doorbell 4) but not carrying over pre-roll and 5.0 GHz support fragments the lineup and confuses potential buyers and the rather generic name doesn’t help.
In fact, this new doorbell could have been positioned more as a battery-powered alternative to the flagship Ring Pro 2 but it fails in that front too as it lacks the Bird’s Eye View feature. If you are deeply within Alexa’s ecosystem, need the rechargeable battery, and want a taller field of view, the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus is an easy recommendation as its app is well polished and full of features. But considering it took 2 years to come up with something with compromises and only a few improvements, I expected more. - Věda a technologie
A nice informative video, with no loud background music, and straight to the point. I just had my video ringdoor bell installed, I was amazed at how easy it was to connect to my wifi.
Thanks for the review. I’m all in with the Ring echo system.
Good choice!
I have just recently purchased and installed the Ring Doorbell 3 Plus, and it obviously has been given an upgrade since this video was produced, as mine supports both 2.4Mhz & 5Mhz Wifi.
I love my Ring Pro 2, but swapped it out for Reolink's POE doorbell. I love being able to watch it 24/7....
Interesting! I have not had the chance to try that brand. Do you like it?
@@ErinLawrenceTV I do. I have it recording to the Reolink NVR, so nothing is ever missed. I also like I can add my own personal message (though a pain, as you get 10 seconds - I'd like to see added in the future where you can add mp3 clips for a personal message); they have a POE and a WiFi version, both of which can record 24/7. Plus there other cameras are impressive as well. I love the Duo 2, which gives you a 150 degree view in one image plus their Trackmix, which is dual lens auto tracking camera. I've been using for about 4-5 months now and love the brand. If you're interested in home security, surely cannot go wrong. Also, look at thinks like door reinforcement, from products like door armor. Strengthens the doorframe from criminal quickly kicking in an exterior door.
Will this be updated to support pre-roll.
Hello, thanks for this review. I just bought this ring battery doorbell, and I am having issues with the motion notifications. The camera records when a person is detected or motion as well, but I do not receive any notifications of those events. Any ideas on how to fix it?
Also, it keeps disconnecting from the wifi.
Thanks
Love our new battery operated Ring Doorbell. How long does your battery last?
I'm using the Blink camera now and I just ordered the Ring Plus because the batteries I was buying for the Blink are not cheap so I had to go with the Ring because you can recharge the batteries. My Ring camera will be here tomorrow
thank you I love my ring doorbell👍
You’re welcome 😊 Glad you're liking it!
I tend to spend a lot of time listening to things on my headphones via my Android phone. This can cause problems If someone knocks on my door. Can this video doorbell be configured To make a ringing sound on my phone that my headphones would pick up?
Thanks Erin.
Thanks for watching Ron!
What is the battery life like?
I am not overly familiar with Ring yet but heard from a few people that there is possible privacy issues with sharing videos and such. Is any of that correct? Not a fan of a monthly subscriptions but did purchase the doorbell plus and spotlight camera that they had on sale. Thank you for the video
Thanks for watching!
i need to upgrade mine, because despite it being wired , every winter below -15 it doesnt work till it warms up. i hope the new models are better with that
Hey Forchy! Good point. Our cameras and doorbells seem only to go off-line if it gets below about -20 Celsius. But they do come back online on their own when it warms up.
@@ErinLawrenceTV hihi Erin! I hope you are well! yea, as I understand it, at least with my model, it doesn’t actually run off the wires but charges its battery off them. As every canadian knows from our cars, batteries and cold are not friends. Im guessing the 5 degree difference between ours is because my model is likely older and less effective due to age.
What is the battery life on the wireless doorbell?
Good question. I can often get 3 to 4 months of life from a battery.
yeah a 4K camera doorbell would be cool but it will comes with alot of problems I feel
like?
I am upgrading from the Ring Doorbell 2 to the Ring Doorbell Plus. So far I am impressed with it. I made the upgrade because of the better quality camera and the better view then the the previous version I am also happy with the response time over the previous version as well. The package notification is real nice. I have always worried about my packages being ripped off, so this is a nice feature. I also find the the color vision at night is not that great right now. It is sub par to other cameras that I have seen, not on doorbell cameras but other cameras. Maybe this will improve with software upgrades over time. I happy they finally mad a head to toe camera, as this is something they have needed for a long time. Over all I would give this camera a A- in a grade. There is some improvement needed but I find it could be fixed real easy through software upgrades over time.

👍🏻👍🏻
Can I ask anyone is the fish eye really that bad? It doesn't look good to me
It doesn't bother me and I can still clearly see.
Not sure you really need a 4K video doorbell? A case of "just because you can doesn't mean you have to" I suspect.
I guess the same could have been said about 4K TVs… HDTVs certainly still provide a good picture quality. Need versus want vs can. 😃
I have a different opinion on what constitutes "GOOD" quality video. Ring tends to be pixely even in this video. I wish 4k or 8k was a thing with them. For now Ill just have to stick with my 4k Lorex cameras without a doorbell.
Bandwidth isnt an issue when you have an NVR and not a subscription to a cloud service.
Ring is so worried about monthly fees they can't offer a modern product at the same time.
I mean who even own anything 1080P anymore ?
I had a terrible time with Lorex cameras; how's it been going for you?
@@ErinLawrenceTV The NVR isn't exactly user friendly. The phone so gives me low quality payback, but it works fine otherwise. What were your issue(s) with it. Mine is the NR900 series
$179.00 is a cash grab nothing more. All anyone needs is a wifi camera that alerts the home owner of who is walking through their property....bells and whistles .....just gimmicks which aren't necessary
Puns? PUNS??? Is this going to be a thing now? If not, it should be...
😂 right!? Somebody stop me!!
When u said fee instant pass!
That's fair - the subscription isn't something everyone wants.
@@ErinLawrenceTV Nor sharing my info with law enforcement no warrant required like Ring does
Ring Door bell I purchased was an absolute piece of junk that NEVER worked, other than a door bell. CUstomer service was also useless. I wouldn't buy another ring. Save your money or burn it but don't give it to Ring is my advice and experience.
