"So how bad are the graphics on the Switch version?"
"I don't know, this game is so fast-paced, I haven't had the time to give a shit."
im not sure, before i could see the demons face, i shot its head off...
Bruh idk, this is a Lite ffs- oh look at the detail on those limbs
Best comment!
Best TLDR I’ve read 😂
Jesus Christ loves you
The peeps at Panic Button really deserve a raise or something, they really are the driving force in the industry, and are a big contributor in the industry in terms of system efficiency and game compression
Down to about a 3rd of the size and it still isn't missing content! (DLC is supposed to come later)
Just buy the game and support it
@fuzimaka someone hella salty for no damn reason
@fuzimaka :( Why be salty??
@@themacintoshnerd I really don't know how to explain what they did other than magic!
Panic button has all nintendo switch owners respect.
Absabloominlootely!
Panic button understand games are all about gameplay, visuals (especially 3d games) are secondary... This is no different than playing the original doom on whatever pc we had in the house in the 90s, it probably didn't look the best but still played great on pretty much anything
@@mullaoslo panic button reworks every aspect of the game and provides the switch user almost the same experience as any other console. It's mind blowing. And then we have EA who is still struggling to give a decent Fifa game for the switch.
@@ranahimanshu9 i only got rocket league of their switch ports but just from that it was clear they knew how to transfer the experience from ps4/xbox flawlessly.. (granted not the most taxing game) but when I saw the reception of doom that sealed it.. If panic botton is does a switch port I'll have no problem buying their games on faith... Let them do ALL the switch ports
no joke they really made this play >: D ! this why have all 4 copies switch and PC, I wish they same company could pick up Unreal Tournament GOTY99 or give it new twist.
Gyro Controls ftw
The future of console shooters (not joking)
Just wish overwatch had better gyro controls
Gyro controls suck ass
@@Robert-xk9no sure hope not
@@thelegendofstonecoldstevea3205 they are way more accurate than controllers and allow for more fine tuned aiming than a mouse. There's many videos out here that prove gyro is better than analog sticks, you don't have to take my word for it.
Honestly, they say the difference is severe and maybe it is and i just have an untrained eye but I really only see mild differences. Panic Button has done an incredible job! I was gonna wait till the price dropped to buy this game but I gotta support these wizards!
Even on TV, this thing runs and looks amazing. Image quality suffers sure. But the assets, lighting, geometry is all there and runs great. Having such a blast with this version
That means you're gonna have more fun. Some people feel like enjoyment of a video game is heavily affected by graphics.
Now i just wish they could bring back the physical edition... :(
Yeah I really don’t mind graphics so long as the gameplay itself is enjoyable. However I prefer not to have gyro aiming because to me, it feels rather cumbersome. Sure I’ve played Nintendo Wii games like Metroid Prime 3, LoZ Skyward Sword and Twilight Princess but the aiming is less cumbersome than the Switch, probably because of the camera controls and real free aiming.
Doom eternal should’ve stayed only on Xbox One, PS4 and PC and should’ve never come to switch
@@jorgem.9690 So less options is better? Quit whining.
I’ve been holding off on getting this port until the ancient gods dlc was ported and so far I’m impressed
Doom eternal is only £12 in Eshop and dlc is on sale too. Only for 4 days and in U.K. I’m not sure about elsewhere.
The thing is, even in screenshots it doesn't look bad. I think you may have under sold just how great this looks and runs on the Switch. Way better than Doom 2016 did, which is crazy considering the the higher tech and demands of Eternal.
it doesn't look or run better than D2016. the framerate is super choppy during every single cutscene and there's mad faces that are just blurry messes- that never happened on D2016; and the multiplayer is crystal clear on D2016, like PS3 good but D:E multiplayer looks like a PS2 game no cap
@@plus_sign Well you're objectively wrong. But you're entitled to your wrong opinion. It 100% looks and runs better than Doom 2016. Disagreeing leads me to believe you have poor eyesight and shouldn't be taken seriously when discussing visual quality.
@@OrangeBox93 save the weirdo energy, ain't nobody got time for that. if you google DOOM 2016 Switch graphics the first post is people talking about how great the game looks, in every review for this game people's main gripe is the graphics. it is what it is
@@plus_sign Well now you're just making shit up. I haven't seen/ read a single review that complains about Eternal's graphics. They are just stylistically different, it looks far better than 2016's solid but generic artstyle in my opinion. I have both Doom games on my Switch, Eternal objectively looks and plays better.
@@OrangeBox93 doom eternal should’ve stayed only on the other platforms and never came to switch
"Like a can of Coke, Doom Eternal is not meant to be enjoyed still." Lol comedy gold.
I had to read it written out right here to get it. Hilarious.
I don't know why Gyro aiming isn't more common on PS, they've had full on 6-axis motion controls since the PS3 launch.
I dont think many people used it, so it got dropped
@@synysterpain It didn't get dropped, the Duel Shock 3 kept the six axis and Duel Shock 4 expanded on it as will as added 3d space tracking with the light bar and PS camera. The Duel Sense also still has motion controls. People just never thought about using it for aiming until Nintendo implemented it into the original Splatoon.
@@scarffoxandfriends9401 i meant support for it in games lol I know it still has it, but its never really utilized.
@@synysterpain TLOU2 and Days Gone got gyro controls added this year in post launch updates, but yeah it's definitely an afterthought.
@@Jahranimo_ i guess I beat tlou2 before I used it or I forgot about it. Tbh if it wasn't for ps4 back comp, I feel like they probably woulda taken it out and it woulda made the controller a bit cheaper. The dualsense is 70 bucks. I already have 2 so I guess I'm alright but still
After hearing the screenshot thing I was like “So it’s the opposite of ori?”
I feel like you guys are really downplaying how good this game looks on the Switch. No shit it's a massive downgrade from the pro consoles (this doesn't even need to be stated of any Switch ports anymore, it's a 2020 game running on a portable machine!), it's still a considerable upgrade over Doom 2016 and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus even if it did sacrifice motion blur for presumably stabler frame rate.
Exactly. Everyone jumps to immediately compare it to the PC version and are like “see it doesn’t look as good!” It’s literally a modern $200 gameboy playing this game, and it looks INCREDIBLE for a Switch game. What Switch games look better than this? Like seriously.
i didnt even notice, i play with motion blur off in most of my games cuz motion blur is just plain ugly anyway.
Motion blur is horrendous in all games in my opinion.
I might get it when it's cheaper. In the mean time I'll play the superior game for me Doom remake. Nothing tops the original fps in that regard imo. There's something about that game that I keep coming back to no matter how many fps games I have and have played.
@@VectorGaming4080 get me obviously a $3000 pc is going to run better than a $300 dollar hybrid console and everyone's complaining about the cloud versions and now there complaining about the ports
still weird hearing johns voice here instead of on GameXplain
does he not work for them anymore?
Oh yeah I thought I was watching a game explain vid lol
@@pinkspider28 right, same haha
Did he quit gamexplain and work here now?
@@maxbreaker Yes
Glad he mentioned gyro controls at the end. They're a much bigger deal than people think -- especially for games like this. I just finished up Doom 2016 on the Switch yesterday and had Doom Eternal waiting for me on the PS4 and -- Wow! -- it feels almost unplayable without gyro controls. Which is crazy because the PS4 can totally do it.
@Lambdatories On a semi-related note, I purposefully bought Quake II remastered on the Switch for the gyro controls despite the fact that I already have it through Game Pass. Alternately, it actually still plays pretty well without the gyro controls.
I'm one of those masochists that doesn't use Gyro. I can't say I get it really, feels really awkward to me.
5:43 "an absolute blast"
This demon has an absolute blast, that's for sure
I own Doom 2016 on Switch and I've been very happy with it. I've actually found that it looks better in portable mode than in docked mode (the low resolution stands out more on a big screen), and I expect the same will be true with Doom Eternal. I understand the $60 pricing considering all the effort that went into this port, but I rarely pay full price to play a game right when it's released. I'll wait however many months it takes for there to be a half-off sale in the eShop (just like I did with Doom 2016).
IMO, I think docked mode looks better this time around.
The system “overclocks” in docked and it shows. There are times where it can fool me how close it looks to the PS4 version/other versions.
In portable:
things up close look(relatively) good up close,
but start to become a pixely, soupy mess the further the demons are away. The sniperscope is a good example of this.
That aside, this game has all the bells and whistles from other major releases. Multiplayer, collectables, the feel, and the “fun zone” is all intact.
@@genericsavings Cool. I appreciate the info.
Yeah but being forced to play on easy if you want anything that resembles a frame rate and not a slide show isn't really acceptable.
@@InJeffable doom eternal is not worth it for switch and should’ve never came to switch
@@jorgem.9690 Cause fuck giving Bethesda and id money for this good ass video game
In 1989 Nintendo’s handheld console was the gameboy, in 2020 it’s the switch.
For a full home console game to be on a handheld is miraculous
As a longtime Nintendo fan, I’ve learned to worry less about frame-rate and graphics and more about the quality of a game.
It’s hard owning a ps5 and a switch at the same time..
Except this isn't a Nintendo game with bright, clean, easily readable graphics and a smooth framerate, this is a third-party game running on an advanced engine aiming for more complex (though still relatively cartooney) graphics on a Nintendo console that doesn't have much power to spare.
@@Actiontime70 If you approach it with realistic expectations, it's not hard, of course a commodity $300 little gaming tablet is not going to offer the same graphics/performance of a much larger, $350-500 console (just as a console is not going to offer the same graphics/performance of a higher end-gaming PC).

I’ve been playing both the PS5 version of this game as well as the Switch version. Both are great but I’ve been putting more time into the Switch version on the principle of it being portable. Being able to play DOOM Eternal on the go still feels so unreal to me.
@Dankenstein I only have 1 switch and it's mostly kept in my bathroom.
Doom Eternal's engine is so unbelievably optimized that it frankly makes every other engine look like it's not even trying. I have it on PC with a low-mid budget CPU and GPU from 3 years ago and it runs at Nightmare settings at 1080p locked at an unflinching 75fps with vsync. It doesn't surprise me they managed to get it running smoothly on the Switch, and if I may... There's something oddly charming about how this looks running on such meager hardware.
This is the most impressive AAA title on Nintendo switch to date.
People are too fussy. Just play and enjoy the game, dont worry about graphics

@@why8308 I don’t have to play it and never wanted this game on switch. Doom is trash that the graphics are horrible.
@@jorgem.9690 then why complain ffs
That simple
Well, except the game looks gorgeous on even my aging PC with a 1060 and runs well in most circumstances as well. One of their technical goals with Eternal was to design the "best looking 60 FPS game" on consoles. The game is stripped down to run on Switch, but it is actually a very nice looking game on more powerful platforms.
I just want a physical release...damn...
yeah if this was a physical release this'd be a no brainer for me but id prefer to get the og instead of the digital version of. eternal
The physical copy would have been my only legitimate reason to buy this. But now that I have a souped up computer there's really no need.

@@themacintoshnerd I don't think that has much to do with it, people are still ordering physical versions online

What i really dont get is, yeah its a noticeable downgrade visually in comparison with, but why aren't they judging it as a standalone release. If you don't consider the other versionds it looks more than good.
exactly.
it looks fine. I think some games look great on the switch because of the lower graphics.
Its because they have to. To some people its all about the graphics. Game play whats that. If it doesn't look pritty its not worth my time.
This game should’ve never came to switch I sweared of god
As a Switch game, it looks absolutely amazing. People always forget how humble the graphics capabilities are on the Switch. It's a friggin ARM processor from 2015 ffs. Don't expect PS4 level graphics, it's not gonna happen on a game pushing the boundaries visually, like this game and most of Panic Button's ports. If top of the line graphics are what you have to have, don't bother with the Switch, like, at all. Get a PC or one of the latest Playstation/Xbox devices.
They have my respect for sure !
I wish wr had more modern games optimized that way !
Less optimized and more visually skinned to the quick to get it working on the hardware. As they say, it's somewhat of a minor miracle this game even works on Switch, but I do roll my eyes at everyone calling Panic Button "Optimization Wizards" etc. - they just strip the games they port nearly to the studs to get them working on the hardware, there's no ultra clever programming or anything. Every "amazing" port on Switch has very obvious visual and/or performance compromises (usually both) to just barely work on the hardware.
If this ran on ps3, it would still be the best looking game on the console
Given how scalable idTech 7 is, I wouldn't be surprised if it could. I'm sure the reason it wouldn't though is because of less memory on the PS3 and overall weaker processing power.
@@GenerationZ313
Weaker processing power!!!
Dude the ps3 has more cpu power than the ps4 lol
@@aymanhassan8178 actually, it didn’t. I don’t think you understand processors

If you want to play this game then get it for the other consoles not on switch
I have a VR capable 2080 gaming PC, and an Xbox series x. When I watch a Nintendo switch review I don’t care about how pretty the game looks, I just want to know if it runs well, when will reviewers understand this lol
John is the best video reviewer. His voice is energetic and exciting.
I bought this game on my nintendo switch and played through it and loved it so much. During my research during the first week of purchase I learned that the game changed in some ways based on the FPS. Anyways, I loved the game so much on the nintendo switch that I purchased an xbox series s to play Doom Eternal at higher framerates. (I don’t have a PC that can play Doom Eternal at the moment and the cost is too high at the moment).
I also will use it to play Diablo 4 eventually so it works out. doom eternal was so good that I decided to buy a whole console to play it in a better way. I love this game. Definitely get this game on the nintendo switch if its your only console and/or if you want to play it portable.
And you know, this makes sense in the context of what it is. This is the switch, a handheld. It was a smart decision to aim for rock steady framerate instead of the shadow of a visual comparison. I appreciate that they didn't visually downgrade where it wasn't strictly necessary. But the fact this is doom eternal on-the-go is one hell of an achievement. (Pun Intended)
I am about to get this because it's on sale. I'm not a super knowledgeable and deserving spoiled PC player but this looks beautiful. Let alone i can play it in handheld on a pimped out smartphone. Love Nintendo.
I guess I'm blind or old but I can barely notice the difference in the graphics.
Too me the zombie was looking a bit buggy in the face but i don't know if it is the same as ps4 but overall the switch graphics aren't bad no matter what anyone tells me and i give the graphics a 7/10 and Doom eternal on switch a 10/10
Just make sure you have at least a 32gb SD card in your Switch to install Doom Eternal
The thing that is holding this game back isn’t the frame rate but the controls. Trying to quick swap weapon with joycon is just painful and unfortunately swamping between weapons quickly is mandatory in Doom Eternal since it is the your main source of dealing damage.
Get a controller with programmable back buttons
@@3vanguardofthephoenix335 On Pc you can switch between 9 weapons with number keys while on controllers you can only tap R button to switch between two weapons. To switch to a third weapon you will have to hold R for the weapon wheel which will effectively slow down your attacks. This just isn’t something that getting a custom controller will help.
To be fair I don’t think people playing this will mind too much about some blurriness while beating demons
Man, I played Doom Eternal on PC and it ran great for the most part, but on Urdak in some places, it turned into a slide show. I say this because it would've been nice to have more consistency like switch.
I completely agree and relate to John's opinion here. I bought Doom Eternal from a friend and started playing it in my PS4 Pro. Since I started playing it a few months after it's official release I was about half way through it when it released on the Switch. I enjoyed the Switch release of the Doom 2016 port so much that I decided to purchase Eternal on the Switch when it released.
Since I was already halfway on the PS4 I wasn't planning on starting it on the Switch till I finished it on the PS4 but I booted it up on the Switch one day to check it out. I obviously noticed the downgraded fidelity on the Switch but I loved the gyro aiming controls so much that I just simply could not return to the PS4 version again. I completed it on the Switch and can honestly say it was my preferred version of the game based solely on the gyro aiming.
I have never continued my PS4 playthrough since but hundred percented my playthrough on the Switch. I played many games with gyro aiming on the Switch before but never really got into the gyro aiming thing till Doom Eternal. Now if a game does not include gyro aiming it is a huge negative for me. For the life of me I still don't understand how they included gyro in the Switch version of Doom Eternal but did not update the other console versions of the game with gyro aiming 🤷♂️
This just brings up the importance a switch pro
Slowass Nintendo taking forever for it.
Glad they made the impossible happen again and got this running and well on switch! I just wish people would stop calling the switch a portable console like that automatically makes it a lesser game system. It's only portable if you want it to be and games like this prove it's just as capable as any system that's exclusively made to be played on your TV.
I personally find it pretty annoying that many compare the Switch with current (and now next gen) consoles and are like "it's not as crisp as those, so it looks like crap"... You can't really use that for anything. The real question is: how is it in its own terms? How does it compare to other switch games? Otherwise it honestly makes as much sense as comparing DS with Gamecube.... It doesn't make sense.
Sure it looks like a console... But come on, it's still a hybrid
In my point of view: it's a really good looking Switch game, but if it's as blurry as they say it is, it's too big of a compromise... Make something else that doesn't require cutting too many corners
the game run quite well, the blur is quite noticable when dynamic resolution kick in,despite that the game look realy good
This and Alien Isolation are PERFECT examples of how to utilize the Switch hardware.
Looking at this and then the new pokemon, what a joke lmao. This looks so much better and is constant 30. Great job to the team who made the port.
Just got it today. Looks and runs fantastic on the switch. Love it on series x and s too.
As long as I can tell what I'm looking at, the graphics are good enough for me. I'm choosing the Switch version because gyro controls are shocking great for first-person shooters.

I certainly believe you about the visuals, when playing 2016 on Switch, I don't notice the difference from the PC version... like put them side by side or take a still screenshot and it's obvious but during actual gameplay? who has time to notice?
Panic Button be killing shit, they re released Doom 3 on the switch which came out in 2004 & they got it looking flawless on handheld.
Wait, John is now working here? Cool!
I must he missing something because I can't stand the gyro controls for Doom 2016
The portable aspect is the selling point for me to pick up the game again. I can deal with the obvious graphical concessions for solid running versions of some of these bigger games
Sometimes I just like playing them to see them for the technical accomplishments they are. Like Witcher 3. I don't think I'll ever do a full switch playthrough of that game. But I was ok with supporting CD Projekt and checking out the game laying in bed when I have time every now and then.
Plus it came with a lot of cool extras
Which also saddens me regarding no physical release for Doom Eternal :(
I have never been one for graphics. I grew up in the 16bit gen. I could care less about 8k 360fps… HOWEVER…
I own this game for both switch and series S. On series S it is amazing. So much power in such a little box. But going from my S to my switch was such a jarring experience that I called it unplayable.. and that’s on the OLED switch. I wouldn’t say the switch is bad, but it is PAINFULLY OBVIOUS the difference in graphics capability. Trust me.. if I’m complaining about graphics then you would too.
the loss in visual quality is too distracting. with doom 2016 switch version, it looked much closer to the ps4/xb1 game than this looks to doom eternal for the ps4/xb1. the downgrade is waay too noticeable compared to the downgrade for doom 2016 for switch vs ps4/xb1. i feel like they could've tried alittle more but rushed the port instead. this looks like an early ps3 era port of doom eternal. i can see why people warned me.
I'm suprised it runs the way it does on Switch. I wonder what they had to shave down to make it work
Got the game a few days ago. It plays great! They did a great job with the port.
To be honest the very fact that its running on a switch is pretty amazing. hooray to modern technology.
that UI is huge

I would have bought it if there was a physical one.
Why is it that big of a drawback for you?
@@hamzabeg6882 The problem with only digital releases for me is, if the E store is ended or the console life ends or the store loses the license, how do you get your library of games you bought back. They have you over a barrel, with a physical copy you can play it directly from a cartridge or blu-ray. The games nowadays are getting ridiculous in GB size, where your hardrive can't even store more than a handful of games (MK11 springs to mind lol). So yeah I would also have bought a physical release of this, I won't bother now.

What did you honestly expect from a handheld with (essentially) a mobile processor / integrated graphics
I’m finally getting around to getting this game. Downloading right now. I loved Doom so I suspect I’ll like this. I’m wondering how this will run on the new system, assuming the new system is indeed backwards compatible when it comes out
I downloaded this on my switch today and I’m about to start it but just looking at the home menus... it’s kinda zoomed in, like some of the text is cut off. Anyone else having this issue?? This is my first doom game ever.
This game sucks on switch play it on the other consoles instead
Switch version has gyro that makes it much better than any other console version!
The messed up the PS4 version because they didn't implement gyro aiming.
It was on sale for 30$ I'm downloading it now I can't wait! It looks good enuff for this guy
I would be interested to know which difficulty setting this review was based on. Doom 2016 ran significantly worse on higher difficulty settings.
If they can run these games. Halo and gta 5 need to come. Just need to get the license.
Well thats a great idea. However. Xbox and playstation will never and I mean never give those titles to another system. Those are their hallmark games. It's like Nintendo letting playstation do a mario game....never gonna happen. lol
The fact that I can play this on a $200 handheld gets extra points
The game is stable and no lag, while I wish the cutscenes had higher frame rate than the game play, I finished ultra violence mode on the switch very quickly, and I may consider going on nightmare later, hopefully this game is backwards compatible with the switch successor so it can look better and run more smooth, but much better than most ports on the switch 👍
Idk why people care so much about graphics. Maybe that’s just because for most of my life I played roblox, but I’ve never given a shit as long as it runs smooth and is fun. I appreciate a pretty game but it’s not very important
Well this review helps thanks, I thought doom 2016 on xbox one wasn’t so « beautiful » but had a ton of fun with it, and this version of eternal on Switch is tempting me a lot!
You should play it on your Xbox instead
Just beat Doom 3 on Switch. Already have 2016 on Xbox One X, but it’s so much fun laying in bed I bought 2016 for $22 in the eshop yesterday (on sale). Honest it’s just fun portable and looks great. Best way to see the details is the bigger screen, but if you want to lounge and enjoy a shooter, these are the best switch games outside of the Bioshock collection.
This game is not worth it for switch
Well no cart no buy for me Nintendo wake up we want a hard copy
If it moves shoot it.
If it doesn't move shoot it till I does!
Been loving Doom since the 90’s - can someone confirm that there isn’t a camera reset button for motion controls? Doom 2016 had the L stick push to re-center your camera - I tried every button I could but maybe I’m missing something. Thanks in advance.
Also let's talk about how much better this game SOUNDS compared to the port of 2016 the music in that game sounded so bad compared to the PS4/Xbox One/PC versions of the game (sounded like it was coming out of a phone call sometimes). Where as here it sounds just as good as other versions. I don't know if anyone else noticed that but I play my switch with headphones a lot so the loss in audio quality in Doom 2016 was really noticable for me. Here however it sounds pretty good!
Agree on Gyro! Each time I go back to ps4 i feel like I lack a limb or two. Shame that ps4 does not use the gyro in the gamepad
Joycon drift will be the end of all lives in switch
on a 1080 compressed youtube video the comparison shows almost no changes
We need a physical copy. Where is Limited Run Games!!!
No we don’t, and hopefully this game will be off the eshop
@@jorgem.9690 Troll alert! BLOCKED!!!
@@icyds you liked your own reply? Bruh
Why does my version look like it's 100% worse than any of the videos I've watched online? Like it's shockingly hard to make things out, like a game boy port in modern times. It looks NOTHING like this on mine
This is highly impressive on a handheld that is so underpowered compared to the others! I will be playing it for the first time on Switch
Why?
@@jorgem.9690 for 1 because it is running a stable 30 fps. The game runs and looks better than the average handheld fps of the past. So I think its a good step forward.
@@senorsnipey1595 since you care more on graphics why not play it on the other platforms plus they have physicals and not for switch
@@jorgem.9690 i buy digital anyway bc I share with a friend. And I loved playing Doom 2016 on Switch. Also I have Eternal on PS4 but I love playing these kinds of games in my bed on a handheld
@@jorgem.9690 plus Gyro Controls are awesome for me
I own it on a good PC and I still love the Switch port. Handheld doom eternal its witchcraft
