Building Props in Google Blocks

  • The next step is to start building out the furniture and props that will be used to decorate my little test scene. I have been a user of Google Blocks since it debuted in 2017. Sadly Google has lost interest in supporting many of its VR projects so the future of Google Blocks is unknown. For now, it is my go-to place for building very low poly objects. Although technically this work could be done in Gravity Sketch, Block forces me to keep my models as low poly as possible which is a limitation that makes me abbreviate my creations while I am building them.

This has to be the future of modeling. I really appreciate you sharing your process!

Hey Don, are you still using Google Blocks or have you switched to Gravity Sketch for your modeling? I noticed the newer levels in Walkabout have much more complex characters and props. Love your work!

Google shuttered access to Google Blocks so sadly I am unable to continue using it. Gravity Sketch is now our go-to for massing new courses during the concept phase and for when we start to bring assets in to arrange them inside the environment. We do use GS for model building but mostly for organic assets as tools like Blender still give us more control over rectilinear objects and structures. The Puffins in the most recent course were all originally built in GS.

Really cool to see how you work in blocks considering how many of your models I've used in my games when I was at uni! The amount of charm you manage to pack into such a low poly count is crazy. I found your channel though google poly back in the day and when I heard it was shutting down I was so mad that I downloaded all the models and recreated the site from scratch so that yours and everyone else's models would still have a place to live on. The site's called poly pizza and it should come up on google (I don't think youtube likes me sharing links). If you have any more assets lying around that you'd like to share definitely shoot me an email! Otherwise keep up the awesome videos :)

Thanks so much, and thank you for building a new home for our wayward models. I eventually built a virtual museum for my Blocks creations (there is a video about it somewhere on my channel and you can visit it through the Sento App on the Quest).

how did you export the models

At the time Google Block allowed you to export the models as OBJ files. Not sure if the application still even works, sadly. The same work can also be achieved using @GravitySketch but even that application is limited to only a few downloads/exports per month for the free account.
