Haunted Mansion Blueprint Walk-through

  • I produced a ride-through video of Splash Mountain for my Patreon patrons several weeks back and they asked if I might do additional ride-through videos with commentary inside other existing attractions, even if I didn't work on these projects myself. I feel pretty shy about commenting on any attractions with any authority that I did not personally work on, but as a FAN I am happy to rattle on about rides I love and point out what I love about them.
    I have put together this virtual trip through the blueprints for Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. Here I describe why I love this attraction SO much and helpfully illustrate what makes it so special in the world of themed entertainment design. I am no authority on the Haunted Mansion, most of my observations come from educated guesses fueled by years of working in the theme park business. I hope you find helpful information in this little tour of this iconic masterpiece.

    Thank you for this in depth analysis! This is the sort of content that I wish to see more of (although I can imagine it takes a lot of time and effort to create such a video).

    In Florida the Water Table was NOT a factor since the whole park is actually built up onto (in essence) a second floor because the Utilidoors are the first floor. They excavated the lake out front of the park to use as fill to build up the park and cover the Utilidoors section.
    They just wanted to copy the original design as much as possible for the same feel, even though they aren't actually elevators.

      I was under the impression that the Utilidoor corridors were not under the entire park but only a portion of it? I didn’t think it went as far as the Haunted Mansion in Frontierland ?

    Great stuff, showing the attraction in this way really simplifies it! I'd be curious to learn about the 'how and why' when it comes to the placement of emergency exits and break areas for dark rides.

    • @DJCarsonCreative
      @DJCarsonCreative  Před rokem +3

      So much of this is dictated by local building and safety codes. Especially newer attractions, it is often ADA, fire, and egress requirements that dictate a layout and the show elements need to cleverly fit into the spaces left over, not necessarily the other way around.

    This is the greatest video ever! Thank you! I'm curious about the seemingly wasted/empty space between the endless hallway and the ballroom's back wall. There is a doorway opening in it for ghosts arriving -I know, but what about the rest of it? Does it serve a purpose?

    • @DJCarsonCreative
      @DJCarsonCreative  Před rokem +2

      It is a pretty big space without a show function, similarly behind the doorways just past the endless hallway. Not sure if more was planned for the space originally or if it is just a factor in creating enough room for the exterior hearse? I can’t think of any show equipment access needs their either? You and I may never know.

    Out of curiosity, why do many dark ride attractions rooms are done angularly. Or their walls are built at a angle

    Nice work. What software did you use?

    • @DJCarsonCreative
      @DJCarsonCreative  Před 5 měsíci

      I used SketchUp to build the model, VR Sketch on a Quest headset to record the tour

  • @computer__eyez
    @computer__eyez Před rokem

    Did you build this out entirely on Gravity Sketch? … Wow 😮
    What is this called, what you are teaching/sharing… level design? architecture walkthrough? (I also saw you meta horizon map video) which makes think you’re doing level design.
    but you expose it, on such a powerful - deeper level, and wield it in such a way, that echoes decades of experience. As one of the commenters said, infectious.

    • @DJCarsonCreative
      @DJCarsonCreative  Před rokem +3

      If I was creating a video game I'd perhaps call this "level design". For a physical environment it would likely be called a "concept model". This model was built entirely in SketchUp and the walk-through was filmed in VR Sketch in the Meta Quest 2 headset. For our Walkabout Mini Golf projects we just call these early 3D models "the course". I have been doing this work for decades but it is worth saying that all of the principles I explore here are very basic and fundamental to good themed environment design, whether they are ultimately going to be a physical or virtual space in the end.

    Hello . Im guessing this is the Mansion in California? Doesn't that mansion have the library? I really like the library. Are there any other differences.
    Thanks great work . I've owned copies of the blueprints for a long time and have attempted to draw 3d illustrations based on them but nothing like this .

    • @DJCarsonCreative
      @DJCarsonCreative  Před 5 měsíci

      This is the California version of the HM. The Florida Mansion does have a library, and a stairway labyrinth room that the CA does not. Florida also has many technical upgrades that the CA version has never gotten, for some reason?

    • @loogoo
      @loogoo Před měsícem

      Also, the California HM does not have the music room, which in Florida comes right after the library and where the piano is played by a ghost whose shadow can be seen on the floor.
