Que beleza! Excelente que esteja apresentando a nata do metal brasileiro ao seu filho! :D Não sou muito fã do thrash mas admiro muito o uso que o Sepultura fazia dos sons e das raízes culturais brasileiras. Não deveria parecer tão pouco comum, já que temos tantas bandas europeias que utilizam elementos folk de seus países. Mas enfim... Se você gosta desses elementos e de ouvir um vocal em português de vez em quando, te recomendo a banda paraense Madame Saatan. Infelizmente não estão mais na ativa, mas faziam uma música deliciosa, misturando carimbó, guitarrada e outros sons brasileiros a um metal/hardcore. O clipe de 'Devorados' é um bom começo.

impossível ele ter ficado, foi dar ouvido pra mulher e começou a se achar o novo Ozzy, achando q já tinha cacife o suficiente pra sair da banda e fazer sucesso. péssima jogada.

O vídeo pode trazer elementos de macumba e vodu sim mas a inspiração da música é outra: Ratamahatta (Rato + Manhattan) é uma criação do Carlinhos Brown idealizada após ele ter visto um rato enorme em Manhattan.
Daí, numa construção quase dadaísta, ele colocas palavras afins a favela, gueto e demais estruturas socialmente excluídas sendo o rato o que há de comum entre pobres (favela) e ricos (Manhattan).
I've always considered Sepultura "tribal metal" I love their sound.
Only chaos AD and roots have the tribal vibe to them (roots more so) their earlier stuff is more straight up thrash metal, and it seems listening to newer stuff, the Cavalera conspiracy (igors and Max's latest stuff) and Sepultura have gone back to thrash metal, which is a shame , because sepulturas later stuff before max left, and early soulfly was very much tribal metal, and it sounded awesome !! Made them unique
Man, this is THE band that made me love heavy metal back in the day. I've been listening to this album and to these songs for almost 20 years, and although I understand what the band meant to do when they made this particular album, it never hit me all this Makumba theme that you explained so perfectly to your son and to the rest of us. It's great to listen one of your favorite songs after so many years and being able to find something new in it. Thak you for that. And PLEASE, you two should react to a few more songs from this album
I plan on doing some more from this album and Chaos AD as well.

Best Band Ever. Its F amazing how they did the transition to a perfect trash metal sound to Chaos Ad and Roots. It requires a lot of talent and balls to do soo
É muito foda ter nascido e crescido nos anos 80 e com uns 11 de idade ter começado a ouvir Sepultura. Eles estavam no auge naquela época e eu os tinha em pé de igualdade ao Metallica. Sempre quis ir no show deles. Quando Max saiu deu uma baita desesperança de nunca mais haver algo assim. Esses caras juntos criaram algo único, inigualável. Em 99 eu fui no show do Metallica em SP e o Sepultura abriu o show. Infelizmente não era mais o Sepultura que eu curtia. Ainda fui em mais dois shows da banda e não me conectei com eles. Recentemente fui no primeiro show do Max e Iggor na turnê do Beneath the Remains/Arise em São Paulo e lavei minha alma, aquilo não foi um show, foi uma avalanche de riffs pra cima de todo mundo. Ali eu percebi que os irmãos Cavalera eram diferenciados.

Excelent choice, one of my favorite Sepultura songs.. Agree Roots was the last great Sepultura album Without Max Cavalera, Sepultura was never the same..
About the meanig of the world Ratamahatta , 'rata' means rat and i speculate that mahatta part comes from Mahatma Gandhi, who is also the name one of the famous Rio de Janeiro squares that punks first called their home.
Anyway the song is about social structure of Brazilian society , living in favelas etc..
Nice TBT! My brother showed me that song about 8 years ago. I think that's actually what brought me to folk and pagan metal. The "primitive" sounds in this song made me become interested in different cultures and history and with it folk and pagan metal.

This is the Single edit! The album version is a little longer, nevertheless this song reminds me of 1996. I hadn't heard a Single Song of Sepultura, so "Roots" got me into Sepultura. I bought the cd in a record store and immediately digged it! Afterwards I discovered the older records which sounded very different to this, but nevertheless very good!

I was talking about Kaiwoas, for some reason I thought it was in Roots. My bad....those two albums are all blurred in into one for me.
There was an instrumental on Roots: Itsari ('roots' if I'm not mistaken). It was the spiritual successor for Kaiowas

Actually "Macumba" is a word to designate afro religions in Brasil. There are two religion sides from this which are "Umbanda" and "Candomblé". Some people may use them to do spells, but is just another religion.
You should listen to their recent albums and pay attention to the drummer, Eloy Casagrande.

Not for me, I enjoy "Chaos A.D." a lot but for some reason never liked "Roots".
I find the path that took them to Roots started with Chaos AD....and Roots was just that next logical step in their sound and lyric evolution. To me they really are the Old Testament and New Testament if you are to compare the albums with the Bible.
I agree, it started with "Chaos A.D." and had Max not left the band and taking in consideration what he did in Soulfly the next Sepultura album would go even further on that tribal sound.
