AFC makes excellent points about the popularity of dive watches. I do want to add that the dials come in a variety of colors so they are extremely versatile, and come in every price point a collector could want. They also go from the pool to a restaurant and to a business meeting with ease. Combined with all of the other points AFC made, nobody can resist buying a dive watch as their first watch.
Sure they can. I did. It's maybe my 5th? And I think most of them are hideous, I just happened to find one that really stood out
I think it's a ridiculous craze to be honest. There's absolute nothing a Tudor North Flag or Rolex Explorer cannot do that any of these "dive" watches can. It's a bit like owning a huge overkill 4X4 that's never going to leave the tarmac.

Dive watches are like 4x4s. We like knowing we could do what we probably will never do. And we love something tough that will last.

Personally, I wouldn't wear a dive watch with formal wear. But I do see it done a lot 🤷
Rugged, waterproof, self winding, date/time, brightly lumed, with an alarm ring. Colorful contrasting faces & alarm rings including pepsi make 20+ looks possible ... The Swiss Army type of watch ...

If you need a highly functional, robust timepiece, just get a G shock.
So stop fooling yourself… the popularity of luxury dive watches is simply due to hype and trends.
Watches are pretty much the only jewellery a man can wear so there's nothing wrong in wanting a luxurious one.
So you wear a dive watch as jewelry? Yeah, I get it. Looks like a Submariner from afar.
It's because of men. The whole watch industry is pretty much propped up by the collecting habits of super-rich men and those who aspire to be like them. Dive watches are the ultimate macho accessory, because they're functional, allegedly tough, and slightly geeky. I love wearing dive watches... but frankly they're completely useless on my wrist. And I do not care.
I have never understood the obsession with dive watches and, after watching this video, I still don't.
All of the the reasons mentioned are not really applicable to the vast majority of watch wearers. There is no reason for 300m water resistance, no need for extreme lume, the rotating bezels are not used by the vast majority of wearers and only serve to annoy my slight OCD whenever it goes off center.
I much prefer a dress watch. They all come with some level of water resistance, lume and usually complications too. The dials of a Grand Seiko are unmatched. Heck, even the PRX beats most dive watches for dials. Dress watches can go from the board room, to the pool, to the tennis court, to the nightclub, to the bedroom and beyond.
To add insult to injury with regards to dive watches, they all look the same. Sure, there are some variations, but they all have that hideous bezel and most come with colours that make the watch look cheap. And worst of all, they are the most faked watches on the planet. I had a £10 Tag, £10 submariner, £10 version of every expensive watch out there (I was a child who holidayed in Magaluf, please forgive me), and everyone else in my school had them too.
Dress watches are the best.

Ahaha, same. I even encounter this video because I need to justify whether it is okay to wear dive watches in formal occasions.
I think that is because of Rolex oriented. People feel that they wear Rolex when they wear dive watch (which isn’t Rolex).
Data doesn’t lie, the majority of Swiss brand watches sale is coming from Rolex. And I bet, since you don’t like dive watches, most likely you don’t like Rolex.
@@Bayu-km7dh you are correct! I'm not a big fan of Rolex, though I do appreciate their ability to create tiny automatic movements.
I'm in my 40's and from my 20's I lost like 5 watches that I loved, becouse of poor water resistance and shocks. I thought about every one of them that will last my whole life. First thing is, you like the watch that you're wearing and then, as years goes by, that watch gets hystory with you, it remembers you all the places you've been, people you've meet, situations you've been. And when you suddenly lose that whatch, becouse you've drop him in a toilet bowl, or some similar situation, you feel bad, and realise that you need a sturdy watch. You dont need 100 or 200m resistance, but if the watch have that capability, you know it should last. That's how you'll end up, searching for g-shocks, or if you want metal and good looks, you'll look for a dive watch. And you dont need many, one is enough. Let him gain history with you.
I agree. Dive watches are hideous and you can find plenty of other styles with 100-200m water resistance nowadays. They are antiquated and the only reason they're popular is because we're still imitating the previous generation thinking that's "good taste" instead of trying to decide for ourselves what a pretty watch looks like. All brands, even Rolex, have made beautiful styles that aren't dive but still as resilient, but they still have to keep pushing dive watches as that's what the mindless snobs demand.
Dive watches are build to last there all around where every where and build like tanks!
