if those children ripped from parents' arm at the border are innocent and shouldn't be responsible for the crimes committed by their parents, then no need for others to pay the reparations for the "crimes"(judged by today's standard obviously) committed by their ancestors. And most importantly, you can't apply today's ethical or legal standard to historical events and persons.
I don't think Bernie is a good candidate, but he is right about this issue. NO. Some persons want special treatments, or privileges perhaps, so desperately that drove themselves crazy. toni harmon May I ask how he was divisive? In 2016 he ran a strong grassroots campaign that energized swarms of young voters and brought people into the political process. Once he lost, he endorsed Hillary and vigorously campaigned for her attending more than 30 rallies in support of her. So how again was he divisive.

Reparations is honestly one of those issues really low on my list. If we're talking about race issues, we need to do something about police brutality. And Bernie's economic goal is to empower the poor and working class with more economic power and opportunities which will massively help all minorities suffering from lack of economic freedom. Bernie protested segregation in the 60s! He's always been on the right side of history and we really need a leader like him right now.

You make it sound like he’s saying no we can’t do reparations bc we can’t afford it when in actuality he meant he’s not sure that writing a check is the best way to solve the issue of inequality which slavery had an impact on. Bernie is especially vulnerable with the black vote, it is where he fell short last time.
First of all, if you look at the polls, Bernie currently isn’t struggling with the black vote. He’s actually doing better than Harris and Booker. This is probably because of name recognition but name recognition is also a reason why he struggled in 2016. Second of all, if you think that reparations are high on black voters minds, you’re ignorant. Many of the issues he is pushing for like Medicare for all, $15 min wage, college for all, etc will positively impact the lives of black Americans far more than reparations. Third of all, reparations is very unpopular (saw a poll where only 33% support among Americans) so he was probably correct in 2016 when he said it would be divisive. Don’t get it twisted. This is just a way to smear Bernie by the corporate left. Most of the candidates who say they support reparations, if you look at their platforms, don’t even support what most would consider reparations.
He uses checks and money to solve everything else... including trillions for medicare for all and free college...
But he doesnt want to use money to help decedents of slaves... he will not win the black vote

It’s not that he doesn’t want to spend money to help fix the issues of economic inequality stemming from systemic discrimination, it’s that he doesn’t believe reparations will do anything to fix that systemic issue. He believes that implementing programs like Medicare for all, free college and a $15 min wage will go a long way to fix the issues plaguing the black community and at the same time helping those struggling in this country in general. Here’s an analogy for you. Reparations is like having parents who beat you down physically and emotionally. They didn’t teach you the skills to thrive in society and even when you learned on your own they continued to put obstacles in your way. Now after decades of this abuse they come to you and say I’m sorry, here’s a check for your troubles. Oh but by the way, we still are going to beat you down physically and emotionally and put obstacles in your way. You have to fix the issues causing the inequality; you can’t just throw money at it.

Reparations are ridiculous because:
- The people who were actual slaves, to whom we would own them that money are already dead.
- No one owns slaves or is a slave nowadays, responsability is personal, no one is responsable for what others did or should receive money for what they were not victims.
- You will own reparations for 90% of people in history, Japanese to Chinese, Arabs to Africans, Africans to another African, ect, open a book.
- We evolve now, stop dragging us to the past, promoting division to scratch a few votes ("who would say no to receive "free" money", I know, someone with a little of ethic & decency).

It wouldn’t be very helpful to give every black person a few thousand dollars. That amount of money certainly wouldn’t pay anyone back. But setting up small business loans with very low interest rates, paying for childcare, etc, can help much more long term. Universal healthcare would not involve writing every US citizen a check to use for healthcare. And the government would not give every student money to use for college tuition. Julian Castro knows damn well that no program involves just writing a check.
